Norgan’s firebird is the Gagana, a large bird-wyrm with green and blue plumage, scaled legs tipped with long talons, a spined tail, and a throat sac that shines red before it breathes fire. You encounter it in Gagana’s Grotto on the Forsaken Dominion main quest “The Castle in the Ice,” where Eir needs its drop. Ice seals the way to Lorade Castle, and Firebird Tallow from the creature’s flame sac is the only thing hot enough to melt through.
Quick answer: Burn one Nokken carcass on each of the three pyres to summon it. Hit the swelling throat sac to knock it over, then use ice on its head. Leave fire behind, because the Gagana takes only 0.2x fire damage.
Why The Castle in the Ice sends you after the Gagana
“The Castle in the Ice” follows “Rumbles in the North.” It starts when you meet Eir, a knight, on the Norgan Snowfield. You follow her past packs of Nokken, the reptilian ice monsters common across the region, until the quest log reads “You reached the wall of ice alongside Eir.” At that point she explains that ordinary heat won’t touch the barrier. It needs Firebird Tallow, and that comes from a gagana.

The next objective reads “Locate a gagana with the spirit compass.” The compass leads to Gagana’s Grotto, a cave southeast of the Norgan Snowfield. On arrival you find an open area with a permanent Portcrystal, and a flight of stairs that climbs to the ritual site.

Add to Google Preferences →Summoning the Gagana with the three pyres
The Gagana does not wait for you in the grotto. At the top of the stairs are three circular pyres with monster bones scattered around them, which hints at what the bird eats. Each pyre needs one Nokken carcass, so three in total.
- Two Nokken attack near the pyres as soon as you enter the main chamber.
- A third is in the nearby caves, and more wander on the slope facing the pyres.
- Pick up each corpse (R2/RT), carry it to a pyre, and set it on top.
- Interact with a pyre to light it if it isn’t already burning. The carcass has to be on fire.

Once all three corpses are burning, a cutscene shows the Gagana diving from the cliffs above and landing in the arena. The objective then changes to “Defeat the gagana and obtain some firebird tallow.” Eir stays and fights alongside your party.

Gagana weaknesses: Damage multipliers and debilitations
Ice inflicts full damage on the Gagana, while attacks of other types deal less. Its head is more vulnerable than its body to every damage type, making knockdowns that leave the head exposed your main chance to deal heavy damage. Seven dots appear below its health bar; each represents a full bar, and the next refills as the current one runs out.

| Damage type | Gagana damage taken |
|---|---|
| Ice | 1x |
| Holy | 0.8x |
| Slash | 0.8x |
| Strike | 0.8x |
| Lightning | 0.8x |
| Fire | 0.2x |
Fire barely affects it, so remove any fire enchantment from your weapons before the fight. Blighted, Caught Fire, and Tarred cannot be applied to the Gagana at all, which means fire and tar traps do nothing. Other debilitations can still be applied once enough build-up accumulates.
| Debilitation | Build-up needed |
|---|---|
| Silence | 1,000 |
| Drenched | 3,000 |
| Sleep | 40,000 |
The Gagana’s flame sac weak point
Right before a fire breath, the sac at the base of the Gagana’s neck swells into a bright orange-red sphere. Hitting it while it is swollen does extra knockdown damage. When the bird is standing upright, the sac hangs at the front of its chest, higher than its head. A Fighter with sword and shield can hit it with jumping attacks from directly in front, and pawns with bows or spells can hit it from range.

When the sac bursts, red sparks fly from the throat and the Gagana falls onto its side with its head in the snow. It stays down for about twenty seconds. Concentrating on the head and neck during that window can remove roughly two full health bars. The sac lights up again later in the fight, and that second knockdown is usually where the fight ends.
You don’t have to burst the sac to win. Hits to the legs and belly still drain the health bar, just much more slowly.
Gagana attacks and positioning
- Flame breath: sweeps across the ground, sets anyone in the stream on fire, and leaves burning patches behind. A full breath can kill you in one hit, even in decent gear.
- Talon strikes and stomps: inflict poison, shown by a bright green splash where they land.
- Tail sweep: hits anyone standing behind it.
- Beak lunge: It lunges at the target directly ahead.
- Wing beats and hops: It takes to the air, then lands nearby.
The longer the fight lasts, the more often the Gagana turns around and charges. Between fire breaths, a Fighter can stay clear of the flames by taking cover under its belly or behind its legs, though stomps and tail attacks still threaten those spots. Pawns can scramble up onto its back and wings. Patches of burning ground may knock a pawn down; revive them with the hold prompt. Bring poison cures, along with equipment or items that reduce fire damage.

Gagana drops: Firebird Tallow, Smoldering Hide and Glacial Ore
Once the brief scene with Eir ends, approach the body and choose “Examine.” The quest log confirms the kill with “You obtained some firebird tallow.” Firebird Tallow is a valuable that cannot be sold, made from the Gagana’s flame sac and hot enough to melt even very thick ice.

- Firebird Tallow
- Glacial Ore (two)
- Smoldering Hide
- Spoils: Lv 3, Ancient Light Weaponry
- Spoils: Lv 3, Ancient Bowstaff
- Spoils: Lv 3, Bowstaff
Defeating a Gagana can yield Norgan Ducat, Aged Scrag of Beast, Saurian Tail, Rotten Scrag of Beast, and Abandoned Supplies (Rare). Its breath serves another purpose: its heat surpasses your party’s magick, thawing stubborn ice mounds in the grotto that your own flames cannot melt. One mound opens up during the battle, revealing treasure. Before departing, follow the arena’s edge along the route its breath swept over. You can find additional Glacial Ore near the body, with a “Pick Up” prompt.
| Value | Smoldering Hide | Glacial Ore |
|---|---|---|
| Buy price | 10,000 G | 300 G |
| Sell price | 3,000 G | 90 G |
| Forgery fee | 12,000 G | 360 G |
| Weight | 0.25 kg | 0.25 kg |
| Stack | 99 | 99 |
| Can be gifted | Yes | Yes |
Smoldering Hide is a piece of the gagana’s protective hide and is used in forging. It goes into two items, the Featherdown Blanket and the Arcane Cloak.
Glacial Ore is crystallized ice taken from icicles, and it feeds most of Norgan’s frost gear. It is used for the Winter-Wisp Cape and for Smithed equipment including the Rimed Needle, Stellar Plate, Snowstorm Seeker, Ice Talons, Dimpled Crystal, Spinechiller, Dendrite, Gelid Branch, Frost Marrow, Frostflake Mirage, Thermal Bevor, Band of Equilibrium, Oathtaker’s Hood, Northbound Cuirass, Swifthunt Half-Jacket, Robe of Hallowing, Coldmarch Cuisses, Infiltrator’s Hosen, and Snowskip Skirt.
Using the Firebird Tallow on the Mountain Stronghold ballista
Following the fight, Eir directs you to the ballista atop the Mountain Stronghold battlements, changing the objective to “Use the stronghold’s ballista to destroy the ice wall.” Travel to the stronghold with an Eternal Ferrystone. Ghouls and other undead occupy the upper floors on your route to the roof. At the siege weapon, coat the bolts with Firebird Tallow. Turn the base wheel, then work the elevation crank until the crosshair lines up with the glowing ice wall on the far side of the chasm. A cutscene shows the flaming bolt breaking the barrier, and the log displays “You destroyed the ice wall.”

The climb down from the stronghold cliffs to the opening is long and steep, and falling is fatal. Past the broken wall is the Snowfall Valley Cavity, a network of caves full of spiders, hobgoblins, and Nokken on slippery ledges. The objective there is “Seek Lorade Castle within the snowfield cavity,” and it ends with “You saw Eir make for Lorade Castle.”
Strikes can crack the cavern floor’s thin ice, letting the brine below rise rapidly. Pawns that plunge into the water are lost; rehire them at a Grand Riftstone, for example the Grand Riftstone of Norgan in the Norgandian Settlement.
Mage pawn skills for the Gagana fight
A Mage pawn brought to Norgan will often have support skills equipped, and some of them work against you here. Fire Pact spreads a fire enchantment to the whole party, and the Gagana takes only 0.2x damage from fire. Swap it out before you light the pyres.

| Skill | Form | Unlock | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire Pact | Most advanced | Equipment special skill (Fire Affinity equipped) | Fire enchantment for all party members |
| Celerity | Basic | Rank 4, 700 Discipline | Sigil that speeds up allies |
| High Celerity | Advanced | Rank 7, 2,000 Discipline | Longer sigil and speed boost |
| Spellhold | Basic | Rank 7, 2,500 Discipline | Stores a spell for instant casting |
| High Spellhold | Advanced | Rank 9, 3,000 Discipline | Cheaper stored-spell cast |
| Celestial Paean | Maister’s teaching | Mage maister | Holy wave: speed, Stamina, less damage |
Mage and Sorcerer can both use Spellhold and High Spellhold; the remaining options are exclusive to Mage. Celestial Paean drains the caster’s entire Stamina supply and knocks them down. If a pawn casts it just before a flame breath, they will be prone in the fire. Celerity’s speed increase helps the party get to the swelling sac before it releases its breath.
Side quests that need The Castle in the Ice finished
Several Forsaken Dominion side quests stay locked until “The Castle in the Ice” is complete. One of them sends you back to Gagana’s Grotto.

| Quest | Giver | Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Quilt Me Down with a Feather | Aymond | 50,000 XP, 20,000 G, Firebird Cloak |
| Hal’s Treasure Hunt | Hal | 35,000 XP, 20,000 G |
| No Spoils Get Left Behind | Chrona | Up to 50,000 G, 80,000 XP |
In Quilt Me Down with a Feather, Aymond asks for undamaged firebird’s plumes from the gagana’s nest. He searched Gagana’s Grotto himself and never found it, and he thinks the nest is somewhere out of reach. After you hand over the feathers, he spends several days making the Firebird Cloak from the extra plumes. The quest leads into “Back to the Temple.”
The Gagana can be fought again after the main quest. Go back to Gagana’s Grotto and repeat the ritual: three Nokken carcasses burning on the three pyres will bring it down from the cliffs. Each repeat is another chance at Smoldering Hide, Glacial Ore, and the Gagana’s other drops.
