The Electric Geordie is one of the more valuable scan targets in Subnautica 2, because a single creature feeds into two separate Biomods at the Biolab. You cannot lock either of them in with the basic Alterran Scanner, though. You need the Bioscanner equipped before the creature counts toward any unlock.

What the Electric Geordie scan unlocks
A confirmed Bioscan of an Electric Geordie counts toward two Biomods at once. Electric Discharge is the standalone Active reward, while Bioluminescence is a Passive Biomod that requires a second scan target alongside the Geordie.
| Biomod | Type | Effect | Required scans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric Discharge | Active | Emits an 800-volt shock to deter medium and large threats | Electric Geordie |
| Bioluminescence | Passive | Glow in the dark | Sandspear + Electric Geordie |
Requirements before the scan counts
The Electric Geordie sits well past the early shallows, and the scan only registers if you have already promoted your basic Scanner into a Bioscanner. Skipping this step is the single most common reason the Biolab refuses to unlock anything after a successful-looking scan.
- Bioscanner equipped — built at a Modification Station from 1 Scanner, 2 Enamelled Glass, and 3 Conduit Crystal.
- A submersible — the Tadpole or equivalent. The trip crosses crush depth, so the vehicle is what gets you there safely.
- Hull tolerance for ~335m — the Geordie spawns deeper than the 250m crush warning.
- Repair Tool and spare batteries — useful both for the Bioscanner wreck run and for keeping the submersible alive on the descent.

Where to find the Electric Geordie
The Electric Geordies live in a deep, green-lit trench that opens up beyond the Angel Comb waypoint. They are unmistakable once you reach them: small, glowing blue, star-shaped creatures drifting together in the dark water. The cluster sits at roughly 335 meters depth, which is below the 250m crush depth warning, so a submersible run is the only realistic way down.
Follow the Angel Comb waypoint from your base and keep descending past the red hull damage warning. The trench widens into an open chamber where the swarm is clearly visible against the dark backdrop.
Performing the scan
Step 1: Pilot your submersible down toward the Angel Comb waypoint and continue past the crush depth warning until you reach the green-lit deep zone at around 335 meters. Hold the vehicle steady before exiting so you do not lose it in the dark.

Step 2: Exit the submersible and swim toward the cluster of glowing blue, star-shaped creatures. Approach slowly; these are the same animals that power Electric Discharge, so they are not docile.
Step 3: Equip the Bioscanner and aim at a single Electric Geordie until the prompt reads Scan Electric Geordie. Hold the scan until the progress bar fills.
Step 4: Wait for the on-screen notification NEW DATABANK ENTRY ELECTRIC GEORDIE to appear on the left of the screen. After the scan, you can also catch the creature with the same interact prompt if you want a specimen.

Return to your base and open the Biolab terminal. Under Active Biomods, the previously "Unknown Biomod" with the Electric Geordie requirement should now display a green checkmark, and the entry will resolve into Electric Discharge with an Install option.
Under Passive Biomods, the slot tied to Bioluminescence will show the Electric Geordie requirement checked, but the mod stays locked until you also complete a Bioscan of a Sandspear — the glowing orange plant found on the ocean floor on the way down to the Geordie trench. Once both checks are green, Bioluminescence unlocks with the description "Glow in the dark".
If the scan does not register
If you return to the Biolab and the Electric Geordie requirement is still empty, the cause is almost always one of a small set of issues.
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Scan completes but Biolab requirement stays empty | You used the basic Scanner, not the Bioscanner | Craft the Bioscanner at a Modification Station and rescan |
| Bioscanner recipe missing from the Modification Station | Degraded Bioscanner in the Blackbox Iso Signal wreck not yet scanned | Use a Repair Tool to enter the wreck ~1,800m east of the Lifepod and scan it |
| Recipe visible but craft button greyed out | Missing Conduit Crystal or Enamelled Glass | Farm Conduit Crystal past the Alien Ruins; craft Enamelled Glass from Creature Enamel + Glass |
| Electric Discharge unlocks, Bioluminescence stays locked | Bioluminescence also needs a Sandspear scan | Scan a Sandspear (glowing orange ocean-floor plant) with the Bioscanner |
Subnautica 2 is still in Early Access on PC and Xbox Series X|S, so creature placements and crush depth values can shift between patches. The Electric Geordie's role as the gate to Electric Discharge and half of Bioluminescence has held steady through the current build, which makes one trip to the Angel Comb trench worth two slots in your Biolab loadout.
