How to Fish: Beat the Spider Crab First Boss and Get the Boat Keys

Use the Empty Beer Can to summon the crab, punish its self-stun, and hand back the body for the boat keys.

Use the Empty Beer Can to summon the crab, punish its self-stun, and hand back the body for the boat keys.

The Spider Crab is the first boss in How to Fish, and it blocks the only way off the opening island. You can’t drive the boat until the Lighthouse Keeper hands you the keys, and he only does that once you catch the long-legged creature that has been stealing his beer. The fight punishes players who stand still and trade hits, but it becomes simple once you let the crab stun itself.

Quick answer: Feed a full Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper to get an Empty Beer Can, use it as bait on the dock to summon the Spider Crab, then stay at range, wait for it to miss an attack and gain spinning stars over its head, run in for two to three melee hits, and back off. Repeat until it dies, then give its body to the Keeper for the boat keys.

Get the Empty Beer Can lure

The Spider Crab only bites on one specific bait, so nothing else will spawn it. Catch and sell enough crabs or shrimp with the basic rod and free lure to save up, then buy the Beer from the shop for $12.

Buy a full Beer from the Lighthouse Keeper’s door. Do not drink it yourself. Drinking it leaves you with nothing usable, and the quest bait never enters your inventory.
Bring the full Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper and give it to him. He drinks it and hands back the Empty Beer Can, which is the actual lure that triggers the boss.

Note: If the crab won’t appear when you fish, confirm you actually have the Empty Beer Can equipped as bait. Simply buying and drinking a Beer will not summon it.

Prepare a weapon and healing first

The Spider Crab hits hard, so going in unprepared usually ends in a quick death. You don’t need to grind the whole island, but a few things make the fight far safer.

ItemCostWhy it matters
Knife$45Comfortable melee weapon; can be sharpened for extra damage
Knife sharpening$14Raises the knife’s damage at the anvil by the door
Brass Knuckles$24A cheaper melee alternative to the knife
Clam / fishFree / caughtKept in your inventory to eat and heal during the fight

Go into the fight with full health and hunger, and keep at least one edible catch in your inventory so you can heal after you have made space. More damage helps only once you are reliably reaching the crab’s stun window. It does not make standing in front of the boss a safe plan.

Summon the Spider Crab from the dock

With the Empty Beer Can equipped and your weapon ready, stand on the wooden dock and cast the line into the water. Reel it in, and the giant Spider Crab is pulled up to start the boss fight. The catch is guaranteed with the beer can lure, so there is no need to fish repeatedly.

The damage loop: bait the charge, hit the stun

You do not stun the Spider Crab by attacking it. The opening comes from the crab’s own attack. Standing beside it and swinging is what makes the fight feel impossible, because it deals too much damage to out-trade with early gear.

Keep enough distance that the crab has to come toward you and commit to a charge attack. Stay close enough to tempt the charge, but not so far that it starts jumping at you, which wastes time and burns the timer.
When it charges, step sideways so the attack misses. The crab then becomes dizzy and stands still, shown by the spinning yellow stars over its head.
Run in during that dazed window and land a short burst. Two to three hits are safe; up to a handful is possible, but greed gets you hit as it recovers.
Back away before the stars disappear, reset your spacing, and wait for the next charge. Repeat the cycle until the health bar empties. If your health drops, eat a fish from your inventory once you have created distance.

Tip: Watch the white bar beneath the health bar. That is the escape timer. If it runs out before the crab dies, the boss vanishes and you have to summon it again with a fresh beer can. Keep attacking during every safe window, but never stand still in front of it just to finish faster.

Why the fight keeps failing

Most losses come from one of three mistakes, and each has a different fix. Look at where the attempt broke down before spending more money on gear.

ProblemFix
Getting hit before the crab is dazedCreate more space and let it charge first; stop attacking early
Reaching every stun but barely damaging itBuy or sharpen a stronger melee weapon
Getting hit as the stun endsTake fewer hits per window and retreat sooner
Crab jumps and drags the fight outStay closer so it charges instead of leaping

Note that dying to the crab keeps your rod and weapon, though you may have to pick them up off the ground. You will, however, need to save up and buy another Beer to summon the boss again.

Claim the boat keys and buy the Radar

Killing the Spider Crab does not unlock the boat on its own. You still have to hand in the drop. Pick up the defeated crab’s body, then bring it to the Lighthouse Keeper sitting on the bench near the lighthouse.

Handing over the crab completes the Keeper’s opening quest and rewards you with the boat keys, which finally let you leave the starting island. You’ll also unlock the “Who Stole My Beer” achievement for the kill. Before you sail off, buy the Radar from the Keeper for $10 so you can find the route to the next island. With the keys and the Radar in hand, you’re done with the lighthouse and ready to head to the second island.
