How to Fish: How to Catch the Triggerfish on Forest Island

The Triggerfish is one of the many creatures you can add to your collection in How to Fish, but it only shows up in one place with one specific setup. Get the location, rod, and bait right, and it becomes a reliable catch instead of a random one.

Quick answer: Travel to Forest Island, buy the Fishing Rod and the Beginner Lure ($3) from the shop, then cast into the water until a Triggerfish bites. The Crab Fishing Rod from the Lighthouse will not catch it.

What you need to catch the Triggerfish

The Triggerfish spawns exclusively on Forest Island, so you first need to unlock boat travel off the starting Lighthouse island. Two items make the catch possible once you arrive.

Note: The Crab Fishing Rod you start with on the Lighthouse cannot catch a Triggerfish. You must buy the standard Fishing Rod after reaching Forest.

How to reach Forest Island

Complete the “Who Stole My Beer” quest on the Lighthouse island. This is the task that starts your path off the starting area.

Kill the Spider Crab as part of that quest line. Clearing it is required before you can move on.

Collect the boat keys from the Lighthouse Keeper. With the keys in hand, you can finally use the boat.

Take the boat to Forest Island. This is where the Triggerfish lives, so all fishing for it happens here.

Catching the Triggerfish on Forest Island

Head to the Forest shop and buy the Fishing Rod, then buy the Beginner Lure for $3. The same lure also catches Perch, Pike, and Goldfish, so it stays useful on the island.

Walk to the water and cast your line. Wait for a fish to bite, then reel it in.

Keep fishing if you pull up something else. The Fishing Rod and Beginner Lure can hook other creatures too, so it may take a few casts before a Triggerfish appears.

Tip: There is a chance of hooking the rarer Drip Triggerfish while fishing the same spot. It behaves the same way but sells for more money.

What to do after you catch it

Once a Triggerfish is on your line, bring it back onto the island and kill it with any weapon. From there you can either sell it to the shopkeeper or eat it to restore energy.

You will know the catch counted when the Triggerfish is added to your creature collection and appears in your inventory to sell or eat. If it keeps failing, the usual cause is the wrong gear, since only the Fishing Rod paired with the Beginner Lure will land one on Forest Island.
