But when working from outside of the office or a classroom, a big worry at the back of everyone’s mind is to have an appropriate background. Some conferencing apps like Microsoft Teams or Zoom have in-app provisions to solve this problem by letting you blur the background, or use virtual backgrounds. But not all of them. And which app is used for meetings, or classes, isn’t really in your hand. It’s up to your organization or institute.

So when having to use apps like Google Meet or WebEx Teams, you end up thinking you don’t have much choice when it comes to the background. Or do you? Of course, you do. There’s always a choice. In this case, the choice is ChromaCam.

Chromacam is a Windows-based desktop application that creates a virtual webcam that can replace your physical webcam in any video chat app. Using that virtual webcam in the apps, you can then use ChromaCam’s in-app background filters in those video meetings.

Set Up ChromaCam

Chromacam is available in two variants. Chromacam Lite – which is free to use and provides basic functionalities like virtual green screen, background blur, and standard background images.

Other than that, users also have an option to buy Chromacam Lifetime software that has a one-time fee of $29.99 and includes additional features such as no watermarks, custom background and logos, and support for PowerPoint slides. That’s right, you can upload any PowerPoint Slide from your PC and present it just like in real-time.

Download the ChromaCam app for your PC to get started. Then, double click the installer file you downloaded to run the setup and follow the steps in the setup guide to complete the setup.

When you first open ChramaCam, it’ll show a ‘Sign-in’ screen. If you haven’t used ChromaCam before, you can create an account by either using your email id or your Gmail or Twitch accounts. Either option won’t take long.

And that’s all it takes to set up Chromacam for your PC. There is no additional process required. Now, you can use it almost any video chat app like Google Meet, WebEx, and many more.

Then, click on ‘Settings’ from the menu.

A screen will appear on your screen. Go to the ‘Video’ tab, and click on the option under ‘Camera’ to expand the drop-down menu.

By default, it will show your PC’s physical webcam as the device. Select ChromaCam or ChromaCam AVS from the list, and click on ‘Done’.

Blur or Change Background in WebEx

Cisco’s WebEx is a great alternative Zoom. However, it doesn’t offer Zoom’s most popular feature — virtual background. You can only set a custom background on WebEx app for iPhone and iPad. But since most of us use our computer for work meetings, it’s not an option for Desktop or Web uses of WebEx to change the background.

Thankfully, ChromaCam app can be used to blur or change background in WebEx as well.

Open the Cisco WebEx Meetings desktop app and click on the Settings gear icon in app’s header.

Select ‘Preferences’ from the list of options.
