After 17 years without a proper way to rest, Minecraft finally lets your character sit down. The cushion is a small, wool-based block you place in the world and interact with to take a seat, and it comes in every wool color. It arrives with the 26.3 game drop planned for fall, and you can already try it now through the Java Snapshot and the Bedrock Preview.
Quick answer: Place three wool slabs of the same color in one horizontal row on a crafting table to make one cushion, then put it on any flat surface and press the use control to sit.
Materials you need for a cushion
The only ingredient is wool slabs, a new block added alongside the cushion. You need three slabs of a matching color plus a crafting table. Wool itself comes from sheep, so you can gather everything early in survival without visiting any rare structure.

To make the slabs yourself, place three wool blocks of one color in a horizontal row on the crafting grid. That yields six wool slabs, enough for two cushions. Shear sheep with shears to collect wool quickly, and remember that whatever color you use decides the cushion’s final color.

You can also start from a white cushion and combine it with any dye on the crafting table to recolor it, which saves you from gathering fresh wool for every hue.
How to sit on a cushion
Place the cushion on any flat surface and interact with it using your use control. Your character sits down right away. To stand back up, press the crouch key, which is left Shift on Java Edition by default or the equivalent button on your platform.
Because the cushion sits on top of the block below it rather than replacing it, you can rest it on slabs, stairs, snow layers, and even enchantment tables. That opens up simple furniture builds, so a couple of cushions between stairs and a sign can read as a sofa without any mods.
Note: A cushion is technically an entity, not a solid block. You can break it instantly by punching it with any tool, even in Adventure mode.
Cushion placement rules and limits
The cushion follows a fixed set of behaviors when placed. Keep these in mind when you build with it or set up seating.

One quirk in the current test builds lets you place cushions on unusual spots like campfires, stairs, and beds. It has not been marked as a bug or an intended feature, so it may change before the full release.
Tip: Sitting on a cushion inside a lit Nether Portal or End Portal keeps you from being teleported for as long as you stay seated. Standing up restores normal portal behavior.

Cushions are craftable in all 16 wool colors, and they stack up to 16 in a slot. Match the wool slab color to the shade you want.

When cushions arrive and where to find them
Cushions are part of the 26.3 game drop, which is set to release in fall 2026. No exact launch date and time has been confirmed yet. Until then, they live behind the “Drop 3 of 2026” experiment in Bedrock Edition and are available in the current Java Snapshot.
In the finished update, cushions will also generate naturally inside Abandoned Camps, so you may find ready-made ones while exploring. Crafting your own from three matching wool slabs remains the fastest way to get exactly the color you want.
