A full breakdown of the Blackmarrow Shades, Devout Edition Obsidian skins, Harbinger looks and masks, and where you swap them.

Mortal Shell 2 keeps its customization strictly cosmetic. Nothing you equip changes health, damage, defense, or any combat value. What you do get is a deep wardrobe spread across the eight playable Shells and the naked Harbinger underneath them, sorted into Shades, full skins, masks, and a separate Mortal Clothing slot. Every Shell has a default look, one alternate Shade earned in-game, and a paid Obsidian version tied to the Devout Edition.

Quick answer: Each of the eight Shells has three looks — its default, one Blackmarrow Key Shade, and one Obsidian skin from the Devout Edition. On top of that sit four Harbinger skins, several masks, and Lavender’s Robe. All of it is visual only and swapped at any Beacon.

Shell Shades unlocked with Blackmarrow Keys

A Shade recolors a single Shell’s armor and clothing while leaving its silhouette and abilities untouched. Each of the eight permanent Shells has exactly one named Shade, and it lives inside a chest around the elevator room in Marrow Keep. One Blackmarrow Key opens one chest, and a chest stays locked until you have actually found the matching Shell, so keys can’t be wasted on a Shell you don’t own.

The color themes are distinct enough to read at a glance. Porcelain Prime turns Genessa stark white, Second Son gives Lazlo a golden tint, Sanguine Prophet adds red accents to Smert’s monk robes, and King in Yellow drapes Eredrim in a yellow-and-black scheme. Warden polishes Gragu’s plate to a silver finish, Bonegrafted swaps Proxima’s carapace for cream-colored organic armor, and Apocryphal runs dark veins through Sariel’s bone plating.

You know a Shade landed when a NEW SHADE UNLOCKED banner appears the moment the chest opens, naming the exact Shade. After that it shows up in the Change Shades list for its Shell.

Tiel’s Shade appears in the game’s unlock banner as Ophidian; some listings also refer to it as Slytherin. They point to the same white hooded assassin look.

The Blackmarrow Key limit and NG+

There are eight chests but far fewer keys in reach on a single run. A standard playthrough yields only five Blackmarrow Keys, which means you cannot open every chest the first time through. To claim all eight Shades on one save file without restoring older backups, you carry over into New Game Plus and gather the remaining keys there.

Because keys are limited early on, spend them on the Shells you actually play. Each chest prompt names the Shell it belongs to, so you can confirm the match before committing a key.

Obsidian Shell skins from the Devout Edition

The Obsidian set is the paid cosmetic bundle, included with the Devout Edition. It covers all eight Shells with a glossy black metallic finish, and the looks appear in the Change Shades menu once you own the entitlement and have discovered the matching Shell. Obsidian versions run darker and shinier than the in-game Shades, with several picking up glowing red accents — Eredrim’s blackened plate gains lit visor slits, and Proxima’s horned helm glows red.

Harbinger skins

The Harbinger is the body you inhabit outside a Shell, and it has its own set of full skins rather than recolors. One is earnable through normal play; the rest are tied to purchases or limited windows that have closed.

Flayed HarbingerPlay at least 30 minutes of the Open Beta

Cosmic Harbinger remains obtainable as the completion reward. Skeletal Harbinger and Obsidian Harbinger were pre-order bonuses, while Flayed Harbinger went to Open Beta players who played for 30 minutes. These three rewards are tied to your account and appear on the same platform account used to earn or purchase them. There are also two Harbinger-only Shades, Skeletal Harbinger and Obsidian Harbinger, which you can apply to the unbonded Harbinger body.

Masks and Mortal Clothing

Masks are headwear for the Harbinger, and they only render while you are outside a Shell. They add nothing to combat and are toggled through the Change Masks option at a Beacon.

MaskHow to unlock
Flower CrownInteract with Marigold near the start
MangoEquip the Mango in a passive item slot
Gragu’s HelmetUnlock Gragu; toggled only while using him
BagheadComplete the Baghead questline
Hilga’s MaskComplete Gorf and Hilga’s frog questline

Hilga’s Mask comes from the two giant frogs, Gorf and Hilga, reached across the wooden bridge from Blackridge Pass. After finishing their quest, the mask sits on the ground next to the cauldron by the wooden rack, and picking it up triggers a NEW MASK UNLOCKED banner. Flower Crown is the easiest to miss, since it depends on an early interaction with Marigold.

Mortal Clothing is a separate slot for garments worn on the Mortal or Harbinger form. The one confirmed item is Lavender’s Robe, found inside the Illusionist’s Cache dungeon after the chest at the end of its route.

Where you change cosmetics

To change your appearance, rest at a Beacon and select Change Shades for Shell Shades, Obsidian skins, or Harbinger looks; use Change Masks for headwear. The first available Beacon for this is in Marrow Keep. From then on, you can use any Beacon to change your look as you unlock more options. A Shell’s specific choices become available only after you discover that Shell. All appearance changes are free, making the system a collection goal rather than a build choice.
