Palworld: Bakemi Tower Boss Build for Hard Mode in 1.0

How Bakemi's poison-based attack reduction lets you tank Hard Mode tower bosses without dodging.

How Bakemi’s poison-based attack reduction lets you tank Hard Mode tower bosses without dodging.

Bakemi is a Dark-type Pal added in Palworld’s 1.0 update, and its partner skill turns Hard Mode tower boss fights into a standing match. The whole build rests on one mechanic. Poison the boss, then let Bakemi gut its attack power while your survivability Pals cover the rest.

Quick answer: Keep the tower boss afflicted with Poison at all times. While Bakemi is in your party, its Grinning Death skill reduces a poisoned enemy’s Attack by 80% at Level 5, so the boss’s hits stop threatening you.

How Grinning Death cuts boss damage

Grinning Death is Bakemi’s partner skill. As long as Bakemi sits in your active party, any enemy you attack while it is afflicted with Poison has its Attack reduced. At the base level the cut is 40%, and at Level 5 it climbs to 80%. The effect does not stack, so a single source of poison is enough to trigger it.

That 80% reduction is the core of the whole strategy. A Hard Mode tower boss like Saya & Selyne or Victor & Shadowbeak normally deals heavy damage, but with their Attack slashed, even their biggest attacks barely dent a well-equipped player. You can stand still in front of the boss, take the hit, and keep firing.

Note: Bakemi does not need to be the Pal you summon. It only needs to be in the party for Grinning Death to apply. That frees your summon slot for a survivability or poison Pal instead.

Applying and maintaining Poison

The build only holds up while the boss stays poisoned. You confirm the status is active by the purple skull icon that appears next to the boss’s nameplate. When that icon fades, the attack reduction ends and the boss starts hitting for real, so you reapply immediately.

You have several ways to keep poison up. Lovander’s Poison Fog active skill is a Dark move that generates a cloud of poison and reliably applies the status. Dandilord’s Mist Stalwart partner skill makes your own attacks inflict Poison. For manual control, load a Crossbow with Poison Arrows, which afflict the target on contact, and fire one whenever the Pal skill is on cooldown.

Poison sourceTypeHow it works
Poison Fog (Lovander)Active skillCreates a fog that applies Poison over an area
Mist Stalwart (Dandilord)Partner skillYour attacks inflict Poison while active
Poison Arrow (Crossbow)AmmoApplies Poison on contact for manual reapplication

Reducing active-skill cooldowns helps you hold poison uptime. Giving your summoned poison Pal the Serenity passive grants a 30% active skill cooldown reduction, letting Poison Fog fire more often.

Survivability layers you can add

Bakemi handles the offense side by weakening the boss. To make yourself effectively unkillable, pair it with one survivability partner skill. Each of the following options tanks damage a different way, and they all work on top of the same poison mechanic.

PalPartner skillEffect
LovanderHeart DrainRestores 9% of damage dealt as Health (life steal)
MenastingSteel ScorpionIncreases player Defense by 10%
SilvegisAegis ShieldCuts shield damage taken by 80% and shield regen delay by 60%
TeafantSoothing ShowerRestores 40% Health when Health drops below 30% (120s cooldown)
SootseerGrave RobberParty takes 30% less Neutral damage
SolenneUntainted Maiden+80% player Attack if all party Pals are different species

The Idiosyncratic passive on Menasting adds another safety net. It boosts Pal and player Auto Health Regeneration Rate by 50%, raises Defense by 25%, and grants immunity to Poison and Burn damage, which matters when you are standing inside your own poison fog.

Three party setups that clear Hard Mode towers

Each variation keeps Bakemi and a poison source, then swaps the survivability piece. All three clear Hard tower bosses without dodging.

BuildPartySurvival method
Life stealLovander, Bakemi, Menasting, Menasting Terra, SolenneHeart Drain restores lost Health instantly
Defense / regenMenasting, Bakemi, Teafant, Menasting Terra, SolenneHigh Defense plus passive regen and emergency heal
ShieldSilvegis, Bakemi, Menasting, Menasting Terra, SolenneAegis Shield stops attacks from breaking your shield

For gear, the tested loadout pairs a Legendary Drone Launcher and Legendary Plasma Rifle for damage with an Epic Crossbow carrying Poison Arrows. Defensive accessories such as the Silvegis Emblem, Warsect Terra’s Belt, and a Defense Pendant, plus a Galeclaw Nikujaga food buff, pushed player Defense past 5,500 and Health above 12,000.

Loading Poison Arrows on the Crossbow

Open your Inventory and confirm you are carrying Poison Arrows. These are a Common ammo type that afflicts the target with Poison on contact.
Close the menu and equip the Crossbow. Hold the R key to open the ammo radial menu.
Switch the Crossbow’s ammo from regular Arrows to Poison Arrows. Now a single shot applies Poison, letting you refresh the status the moment the skull icon disappears from the boss’s nameplate.

Where this build does not work

Poison does not apply to Raid Bosses. Because the entire attack reduction depends on the boss being poisoned, the build is specifically for Tower Bosses and offers no protection in raids. Plan a different setup for those fights.

The only common way this fails against a tower boss is letting poison lapse. If the boss’s hits suddenly hurt, check the nameplate. A missing skull icon means Grinning Death is no longer active, so reapply poison and the damage drops back to negligible.

How to get Bakemi

Bakemi is Paldeck entry No. 168, a Dark-type Pal introduced with the 1.0 release on July 10th, 2026. It has HP 70, Attack 85, and Defense 80, along with Handiwork Lv. 3, Medicine Production Lv. 4, and Transporting Lv. 2 work suitability. It does not spawn in the World Tree, so breeding is a reliable route.

Once Bakemi is in your box, level it and raise Grinning Death toward Level 5 for the full 80% attack cut. From there, pick whichever survivability partner fits your gear, keep the boss poisoned, and Hard Mode towers stop being a threat.
