Permafrost New Home Quest Walkthrough: Every Objective and Material Cost

Build the first shelter, bed, Workbench, flint tools, Stone Furnace and radio in the exact order the quest asks for.

Build the first shelter, bed, Workbench, flint tools, Stone Furnace and radio in the exact order the quest asks for.

“New Home” begins as soon as you free your dog in Bone Cave, turning the rest of that expedition into your first lasting base. Leave the cave for the Woods, then build a small hut from wood, add a bed and storage, and make a Workbench. Next, craft three flint tools, set up a Stone Furnace, produce one Copper Ingot, and build a Radio Station Bench; finish by tuning in to Icarus. These instructions reflect early access, so updates may alter recipes and steps.

Quick answer: Complete all eleven objectives in order, ending by pressing E on your built Radio Station Bench to hear the transmission. The whole chain costs roughly 75 Wood, 40 Stone, 5 Cloth, 5 Flint, 9 Copper and 15 Coal, plus 2 blueprint points for the furnace.

Everything the New Home quest asks you to build

Each structure and bench has a fixed cost in the build menu, shown as owned over required. Gather the full set below before you start placing pieces so a storm does not catch you mid-build.

StructureQuantityCost each
Wooden Foundation25 Wood
Wooden Wall53 Wood
Wooden Doorway13 Wood
Wooden Floor/Roof23 Wood
Wooden Door12 Wood
Bed15 Cloth + 5 Wood
Small Wooden Chest12 Wood
Workbench110 Wood
Stone Furnace140 Stone
Radio Station Bench13 Wire + 10 Wood

Make the three flint tools at the Workbench: a Flint Pickaxe costs 2 Flint + 4 Wood, a Flint Axe costs 2 Flint + 4 Wood, and a Flint Shiv costs 1 Flint + 2 Wood. Flint is mined from Flint Boulders; several are in Bone Cave, so use your stone pickaxe to gather some as you pass through.

Where to build your base

You may build anywhere beyond a No Build Zone; for the objectives, the location does not matter, only the pieces you place. A convenient spot is the first clearing below Bone Cave’s exit. It is beside a road lined with wooden fences, with stacks of planks nearby that you can break for quick Wood, plus pine trees, Rock Boulders and bushes just a few steps away. Deer and boar are in the area, Nomad Camp is along the road, and the broken bridge on the road back toward Horizon is about a minute away.

Flat ground matters. Settlements, the road bridge and the Hunter’s Glade tower are No Build Zones, so you cannot place structures there.

New Home objectives in order

Follow the marker all the way through Bone Cave and exit at its far end. This brings you into the Woods area, where daytime temperatures can reach around -20°C. Read the note beside the exit to open the building tutorial; it explains that a simple shelter will keep out the cold.

Build the shelter shell, which tracks five build lines at once. Place two Wooden Foundations side by side, then five Wooden Walls and a Wooden Doorway around the edge, two Wooden Floor/Roof pieces on top, and the Wooden Door set into the doorway. That comes to 36 Wood for the whole frame.

Build and claim a Bed. It costs 5 Cloth and 5 Wood from the Survival tab. Place it inside, look at it, and press E to claim it. You will see “RESPAWN POINT SET” confirming it is now where you respawn.

Build a Small Wooden Chest for 2 Wood from the Containers tab. If you want more room later, the larger Wooden Chest costs 5 Wood.
Build a Workbench for 10 Wood from the Utilities tab. This unlocks the higher-tier flint recipes you need next.
At the Workbench, craft the Flint Pickaxe, Flint Axe and Flint Shiv. Each is its own objective line, and all three use the flint you gathered in Bone Cave.

Press U to open Blueprints, go to the Building tree and learn the Stone Furnace. It costs 2 blueprint points, which arrive as your blueprint level bar fills.

Go to the Utilities tab and use 40 Stone to build the Stone Furnace. The hut, which has only two foundations, is too cramped for the furnace, so position it outdoors beside one of its walls.

Use the furnace to smelt a Copper Ingot from 3 Copper and 5 Coal. The furnace can also produce Coal: 5 Wood makes 2 Coal. For the optional “Search the Cold Zone” objective, pick up the loose Copper Ingot on the ground at Nomad Camp, which is a short run from the hut.
In the Utilities tab, build a Radio Station Bench using 3 Wire and 10 Wood. Craft Wire at the Workbench from Copper Ingots; each Wire takes one ingot, so make three ingots for the three Wire. Set the bench on a constructed floor with enough space around it.
Press E on the bench to listen to the transmission from your friend. The quest closes with “NEW HOME – QUEST COMPLETED,” and Icarus’s message rolls you straight into “The Outpost.”

Building controls and placement

To equip the Building Tool, hold Q and select Construction, or press B. Use the mouse button indicated on the HUD to open or close its menu; place pieces with LMB and rotate them with R. Q and E move between the tabs in this order: Survival, Utilities, Structures, Containers, Farming, Lights and Furniture. Each entry lists your amount against the required cost, and a green ghost indicates a valid placement.

Use the Radial Menu or switch the tool to deconstruction mode to remove a piece and recover some of its cost. To snap walls, doors, stairs, the bed and benches into place, provide a foundation or floor beneath them.

Gathering Wood, Stone and Copper fast

With an axe, breaking a stack of planks yields several Wood and is quicker than cutting down trees. To harvest a tree, fell it with LMB, then chop its trunk on the ground for Wood. Because a Stone Axe may break while you are chopping, craft the Flint Axe as soon as your Workbench is ready.

A ground Rock Shard yields 1 Stone, and a pickaxe can break Rock Boulders for several more. The furnace has the largest single Stone requirement at 40, so break each Rock Boulder you encounter while heading out of Bone Cave.

Copper needs the Flint Pickaxe, which mines Sulfur, Copper, Coal, Flint and Stone. There are no Copper Boulders at the hut itself. The nearest ones sit in a ravine past the repaired road bridge, in the chasm leading to Solar Fields, and in Landscar Cave.

Staying warm while you build

First, place a Campfire costing 2 Stone beside your building site and cook your Meat. A storm and nighttime may arrive while you build, pushing the temperature down toward -27°C and bringing up the “BONE-CHILLING COLD” warning. If you collected the Wall Torch recipe note in Horizon’s bunkhouse, craft one for 2 Cloth + 1 Wood from the Lights tab. Mount it on an interior wall, add Wood for fuel and light it; the closed hut will then be much warmer than outside.

To pass the night, claim the bed and hold E to select “Rest” or “Sleep.”

Common placement errors

  • CAN’T BUILD IN AIR — the piece is not touching the ground or a foundation.
  • AREA OBSTRUCTED — something is in the way of the placement.
  • FOUNDATION REQUIRED! — Put a foundation or floor beneath walls, doors, stairs and furnishings such as the radio bench.
  • MISSING RESOURCES — you are short on the cost shown, so gather more.

A Radio Station Bench that refuses to place usually means you still need Wire or there is no open floor space. The starter hut becomes cramped with the bed, chest and Workbench inside; add foundations and extend the walls to free up room. The hut remains after the quest, serving as your storage and respawn base for “The Outpost” and later quests.
