Quick answer: Honed Blacksteel is in a chest in the Crimson Forest, about 27 m from the Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower Base bell and about 22 m above it. It is the Soul Tempering material for the Sundering Dual Axes.

Honed Blacksteel has one use: it is the Soul Tempering material for the Sundering Dual Axes. Find the chest, then take the material to Myst in Pangzhen.

Where to find Honed Blacksteel

You’ll find the chest at the Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower, with two bells nearby. Measure from Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower Base, the closer bell, as your reference point. The distances below are straight-line measurements between each bell and the chest.

BellDistance to chestHeight difference
Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower BaseAbout 27 mChest is about 22 m higher
Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower GateAbout 35 mBell is about 21 m above the chest

Make a rest stop at the Tower Base bell before hunting for the chest. Bells function as fast-travel and respawn points, so resting at this one puts your return point as close to the chest as a bell gets. The Crimson Forest collectibles guide details the area’s remaining chests, keys and shards.

  • Type: Weapon Soul Tempering Material
  • Effect: “Used to Soul Temper the Sundering Dual Axes.”
  • Description: “A cluster of black metallic fragments, layered and curled like withered flames. Their edges are notched and broken, and look all the keener for it.” “Weapons forged from this material often possess both exquisite beauty and supreme sharpness.”

What Honed Blacksteel upgrades: Tiansha Twin Calamities

To use the material, take the following to Myst in Pangzhen:

  • The Sundering Dual Axes
  • 1 Honed Blacksteel
  • 5,000 Remnant Dust

Talk to Myst and choose “Soul Temper”. The full process is covered in how to Soul Temper. When the upgrade is done, the Sundering Dual Axes gain Tiansha Twin Calamities.

The base axes use the Baleful Aura art, which works like this:

“Light Attack hits build the Baleful Aura Gauge. When the gauge is full, Baleful Aura activates for 20 seconds, increasing damage dealt and Sha-Chi Depletion. While active,Heavy Attack combos hurl the dual axes, which latch onto enemies and continuously slice them. When Baleful Aura ends, its gauge is emptied.”

Tiansha Twin Calamities changes how that gauge works:

“The Baleful Aura Gauge now has 2 tiers. Once the first tier is full, buildup continues into the second. Filling the second tier enhances Heavy Attack combos, Baleful Barrage, and Heart-Rending Strike and refreshes the duration of Baleful Aura. After 16 seconds, Baleful Aura ends and the gauge is emptied.”

In practice, you keep building the gauge after the first tier fills. Filling the second tier strengthens three attacks and resets the Baleful Aura timer. For the other materials and the weapons they upgrade, see all Soul Tempering materials.
