The Draconic Staff and the Staff of Light are both power level 4 staves in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, and they sit close enough on paper that many mage players struggle to pick one. The real difference comes down to a trade between guaranteed damage and crit chance, plus a large gap in how hard each one is to craft.

Quick answer: The Draconic Staff is the easier pick for most players. It needs only Artisan level 40 and cheap materials, and its +15% crit chance suits crit builds. The Staff of Light has slightly higher rune damage and 200 more durability.

Rune damage and durability at each power level

Both staves share the same attack combo of 4 and both start at power level 4, and both can be ascended at the mystic forge using ascension cores up to the current cap. Their rune damage multiplier is where they split. The Staff of Light carries a higher number at every step, while the Draconic Staff makes up ground through crit chance rather than base output.

Across every power level, the Draconic Staff sits roughly 0.4 to 0.5 below the Staff of Light on its rune damage multiplier. Its +15% crit chance works out to about a 1.0375x average damage increase, which does not fully close that gap at the multipliers in the game today. In practice the Staff of Light edges ahead on average damage, but the margin is small and only matters when it pushes an enemy across a hit breakpoint.

The Draconic Staff’s −15% durability is baked into its 1100 total, so it wears down faster than the Staff of Light’s 1300. Keeping durability topped up with Magical Mending makes this a minor concern outside long fights like extended wave content.

Crafting cost and how to unlock each recipe

This is where the two staves separate the most. The Draconic Staff is far cheaper and unlocks much earlier, while the Staff of Light is a masterwork craft that demands rare materials and a completed quest. Both are now built at the mystic forge after the smithing anvil was removed from the game.

The Draconic Staff recipe comes from a chest on the western wall outside Skeklac Kara, the dragonkin vault in Ashien’s Watch. Studying the sinister-looking staff parts unlocks the recipe. The Staff of Light instead requires finishing Highlighting the Problem, and its single Vault Core is the standout bottleneck, on top of a much larger Vault Shard and Blightwood cost.

Which staff to build first

Pick the Draconic Staff if you want a strong magic weapon as early as possible or you are running a crit-focused build. It costs a handful of common materials, opens up at Artisan 40, and its +15% crit chance rewards any setup that stacks crit. For most players this is the more practical choice by a comfortable margin.

Pick the Staff of Light if you value flat, predictable damage and the extra 200 durability, and you have already cleared Highlighting the Problem with the materials to spare. Its higher rune multiplier gives consistent output with no reliance on crit rolls, which helps when enemy resistances or a durability-heavy fight are in play.

Because both cap out at power level 4 before ascension and their damage numbers stay close all the way to power level 7, neither choice locks you out of endgame magic performance. The deciding factors are how early you want the staff, whether your build leans on crit, and how much you value guaranteed damage over a chance at higher hits.
