RuneScape is introducing a lasting character mode that begins in Gielinor at Level 3, with a fresh economy and no history of Treasure Hunter. It goes live on December 2, 2026, alongside the Adventure Guide and the opening phase of the Remastered Journey, while sharing the game with its current players.

Quick answer: A Reignited character is a fresh-start account with its own Grand Exchange, hiscores, and boss instances. It can only trade with other Reignited players, launches December 2, 2026, and has free members’ access through December 12.

What a Reignited character actually is

It works much like Ironman: Reignited is an additional mode within RuneScape, not a substitute for your existing character. Your character begins at Level 3 in a game free of Treasure Hunter and paid progression, and uses the same worlds as players already do.

The separation is financial, not social. Reignited characters use a distinct Grand Exchange, hiscores, and boss instances, and trading is limited to other Reignited players. Some worlds will also be reserved for Reignited characters, keeping existing accounts out.

Everyone who has played up to now is a “Veteran” character. That progress stays exactly as it is. When you make a new account, you will be asked to pick: a Veteran character plugged into the mature 25-year-old economy, or a Reignited one tied to the new one.

You cannot flip a character between the two types under the originally announced rules, because that would let players carry wealth across the economic wall. This is one of the points Jagex is now revisiting.

Veteran vs Reignited: what each type can do

Both types share worlds and chat freely with each other. They are kept apart only where the economy or competitive progress is at stake. Clans and homesteads are the one space they fully share, so a group can keep playing together even if some members Reignite and others stay Veteran.

The fresh economy and the Hall of Legends

Because the Reignited market opens empty, items that Veterans treat as throwaway can be genuinely scarce early on. Materials that pile up in a two-decade-old economy may be hard to find at launch, which is the point. It leaves room for players who want to gather, craft, and supply those resources rather than buy them for pocket change.

The new hiscores feature the Hall of Legends, which reopens world-first challenges in combat, skilling, quests, exploration, and several more lighthearted categories. Whoever completes each feat first earns a permanent statue of their character inside the Hall. With no 25-year lead for anyone to bring, every player starts on equal footing.

No Treasure Hunter and no paid progression

Reignited ships without Treasure Hunter entirely, and Jagex describes it as a world that will never have it. Reignited players also cannot buy Radiant Stars from the Marketplace. The mode leans on a year of restoration work that stripped out Dailyscape, Auras, and MTX items, and reworked systems like Dungeoneering, the player avatar, player-owned houses, and the Grand Exchange.

The game will also get officially supported plugins, built into the client during the same period. Quest Helper is one example, and a number of community-made plugins will join it, giving new characters access to tools unavailable for much of RuneScape’s history.

Free members’ access from December 2 to 12

During the ten days beginning at launch, Reignited characters may access members’ worlds for free, from December 2 through December 12, 2026. This provides a straightforward way to try the mode without an active subscription. After that access period, the initial proposal called for Reignited characters to need a separate membership; that policy is currently being reconsidered. Why the plan is being re-evaluated

Backlash spread through the community within days of the announcement. Players feared a permanent, separate economy could drain the established worlds, weaken group activities and trade, and leave veterans feeling they had to start over to remain competitive. In-game protests followed; on October 6, Jagex acknowledged the concerns, said it was reconsidering the plan, and apologised to Veterans who felt pushed aside.

Mod Ryan shared some initial possibilities under consideration on October 9. The team has yet to establish whether any are technically workable, so they are possibilities, not commitments. Even so, they offer a glimpse of the direction the design may take.

  • Give players the option to “Reignite” a character they already own using their existing membership, then switch between its Veteran and Reignited forms.
  • Offer Veteran-only prizes that won’t be obtainable in the future, including a distinctive cosmetic Max Cape that remains with a character if they Reignite.
  • Revisit the lifespan of worlds reserved for Reignited characters, potentially doing away with them so the two character types can use shared worlds.
  • Loosen limits on interactions between characters once the Reignited economy has stabilized and the World Firsts have been secured.
  • Allowing cosmetics, extra bank spaces, holiday rewards, skilling pets, and titles to come with you when you Reignite.

The announced December 2 launch and ten-day free period remain in place, while membership, world access, and interaction between character types are still being reconsidered. Regard the more restrictive rules described above as temporary until Jagex settles the design.

Jagex has no set timetable for combining the Reignited and Veteran economies, but leaves open the possibility of doing so later. Its current focus is keeping both economies stable; the character types are intended to share the game, much as Ironman accounts do now.
