Shells Roblox Mutation Multipliers and Drop Chances Explained

Mutations in Roblox Shells are special modifiers that attach to a shell when you dig it up. Each mutation changes the shell's appearance with unique visual effects and applies a multiplier to its sell value in Shellings. Some mutations roll freely from any dig, while a few only appear at night or during the Eclipse event.

Quick answer: A shell can carry only one mutation at a time. The strongest mutation is ??? at a 7x sell multiplier with a 0.09% roll chance, and the worst is Stinky, which lowers the sell price to 0.8x.

How shell mutations work

When you dig a shell, the game rolls for a mutation independently of the shell's rarity. If a mutation hits, it multiplies the final sell price by the listed value. A 1,000-Shelling shell with a 2.5x mutation sells for 2,500 instead.

Only one mutation can be applied per shell in the current build. Stacking multiple effects on the same shell is not possible, so the goal is to land the highest single multiplier you can on the rarest shell type available in your zone.

Two mutations are time-locked to night: Glowtide and Dreamshell. One mutation, Scorched, has its base chance doubled during the Eclipse event, which cycles roughly every three hours of server uptime.

All Shells mutations: Multipliers and chances

The table below covers every mutation currently in the game, the sell-value multiplier each one applies, the base roll chance, and any spawn condition that restricts when it can appear.

MutationMultiplierChanceCondition
Stinky0.8x4.521%Any time
Foggy1.1x13.562%Any time
Shiny1.5x19.892%Any time
Frozen1.5x10.85%Any time
Shocked1.6x9.042%Any time
Scorched1.7x7.233%2x chance during Eclipse
Glowtide2.2x8.137%Night only
Spectral2.5x9.042%Any time
Radioactive2.5x8.137%Any time
Cursed2.6x3.617%Any time
Dreamshell3.2x3.617%Night only
Pearlescent3.5x1.808%Any time
Divine5.5x0.452%Any time
???7x0.09%Any time

Shiny is the most common positive mutation at roughly one in five digs. Foggy sits just behind it but only adds a 1.1x bump, so it is more useful for collection titles than for profit. Stinky is the only mutation that loses you money, dropping the sale to 80% of base value.

Best mutations for profit

If you are farming for Shellings, the multipliers that matter most are the ones above 2x. Spectral, Radioactive, Cursed, Dreamshell, Pearlescent, Divine, and ??? all qualify, and four of them sit in rarity tiers under 4%.

Pearlescent at 1.808% and Divine at 0.452% are the realistic chase targets for high multipliers without venturing into sub-0.1% odds. The ??? mutation at 7x is the ceiling, but its 0.09% rate means most players go thousands of digs without seeing one.

Stacking a high-value shell rarity with one of these top mutations is where the largest single sales come from. A rare base shell with Divine or ??? can pay out more than dozens of unmutated rare shells combined.

Night-only and event-only mutations

Two mutations are gated behind the in-game night cycle. Glowtide (2.2x) and Dreamshell (3.2x) will not roll during daytime digs at all, so night farming is the only way to hit them or to complete the related collection titles.

Scorched is not gated, but its 7.233% base chance doubles during the Eclipse event. Eclipse also boosts Sun Shard drops and increases your luck, which makes it the strongest farming window when it triggers.

Tip: Switch to night digging if your goal is the Dreamer title or the Glowtide collection. Switch to Eclipse windows if you are hunting Scorched or Sun Shards.

How to increase your mutation chances

Three factors push your effective mutation rate up. The Luck stat on your active tool raises overall roll quality, the Mutation Amplifier stat directly affects mutation rolls, and the Mutant trait adds a flat 20% to your chance of rolling any mutation.

End-game claws like Solar Tide Claw and Brian Blossom carry the highest combined Luck and Mutation Amplifier values, which is why they are the standard tools for mutation farming once unlocked. Lucky Rolls from codes and shop items can also be used to re-roll traits onto a tool until you land Mutant or another useful trait.

If you keep digging only normal shells, check that you have the highest Mutation Amplifier tool you can afford equipped, that your trait slot includes Mutant where possible, and that you are digging in a zone that matches the shell rarity you want the mutation to land on.

Mutation rates are baseline rolls and can shift with updates, balance patches, or new events, so values may move slightly version to version. The current set covers fourteen mutations with multipliers from 0.8x up to 7x, and the practical farming priority stays the same: maximize Luck and Mutation Amplifier, dig at night for Glowtide and Dreamshell, and play Eclipse windows for Scorched and luck boosts.
