Where the Mutation Consumable comes from, what it costs, and the exact way to apply it to an egg before it hatches.

The Mutation Consumable is the one item in Steal an Egg that lets you force a mutation onto an egg instead of waiting for a mutated shell to spawn in a biome. It comes from the Rift Boss route, it costs Boss Tokens, and it only works during a narrow window — after an egg is sitting in your base, but before it hatches.

Quick answer: Beat the Abyss Overlord in a Rift, buy the Mutation Consumable for 400 Boss Tokens in the Boss Shop, then equip it and hold E on an unhatched egg placed in your base.

A mutation multiplies the money per second a pet earns once it hatches. That multiplier sits on top of the pet’s rarity and its size roll, so the same consumable is worth far more on a big, high-rarity egg than on a small common one. Fractured sits in the upper half of the tracked mutations, above Golden and below Parasite and Rainbow, though these multiplier values come from community tracking rather than a published chart and can shift with updates.

A failed attempt still burns the consumable. At a 10% success rate, expect to spend several before one lands, and don’t waste them on eggs you wouldn’t keep anyway.

How to get the Mutation Consumable from the Boss Shop

Head to The Rift and take part in the Rift Boss event. The Abyss Overlord spawns there, and damaging it during the fight is what pays out Boss Tokens.
Defeat the Abyss Overlord and collect your Boss Tokens. A single successful boss run is generally enough to cover three Mutation Consumables.

Open the Boss Shop menu. The Mutation Consumable is listed there at 400 Boss Tokens, with its 10% rate shown on the item itself.

Buy the consumable. It lands in your inventory and can be pulled up from the hotbar when you need it. Boss Mastery rewards are another route to consumables if you’re running the boss regularly.

Get an egg into your base before you use it

The consumable has no effect on a pet that has already hatched. It only targets eggs, and only eggs that are sitting in your own plot, so the steal comes first.

Run out to one of the adventure zones — Forest, Lake, Desert, Jungle, Snow, Volcano, or Abyss Ocean — and find a nest worth raiding. Bigger eggs are the better target, since the multiplier scales off a larger base number.
Press the E prompt on the egg to grab it. A “RUN!!” warning fires the moment you take it, and the zone’s guardian gives chase — a giant shark handles that job in the Abyss Ocean.

Sprint back along the path to your plot without dropping the egg. Speed is what keeps this survivable, which is why trail upgrades matter on longer routes out of the harder zones.

Place the egg on the floor of your base. A hatching countdown starts immediately, and everything from here has to happen before that timer runs out.

How to apply the Mutation Consumable to an egg

Equip the Mutation Consumable from your hotbar while standing in your base.
Walk up to the placed egg until the interaction prompt appears, then hold E to trigger Apply Mutation. Aim it at the strongest egg you currently have growing.
Read the result on screen. A failed roll returns the message “The consumable fizzled…” and the item is gone. A successful roll attaches the mutation to the egg, and the pet that hatches carries it along with the higher income rate.

Stock up before you start. Chasing near-certain odds at a 10% rate takes roughly 88 attempts, so treat each one as a cheap lottery ticket rather than a plan.

How to confirm the mutation actually landed

Once the egg hatches, check the pet’s card. A mutated pet displays its mutation name alongside its rarity, and the money per second figure will be visibly higher than an unmutated pet of the same species and size. That income number is the reliable check, since multiplier values move between updates while the displayed earnings always reflect the current math.

If you plan to fuse the pet later, keep the mutation in mind. Fusing three pets that share the same mutation carries it through to the result and can push the new pet’s size up. Mixing a mutated pet with plain ones is where mutations get lost, so hold a mutated pet back until you have two matching copies rather than feeding it into whatever fuse is available.
