The Blood of Dawnwalker: Best Early Skills, Gear, and Power Spikes

The exact first skills to unlock, legendary gear locations, and a permanent health elixir to get strong fast in Vale Sangora.

The exact first skills to unlock, legendary gear locations, and a permanent health elixir to get strong fast in Vale Sangora.

Getting powerful early in The Blood of Dawnwalker comes down to three moves. Spend your first skill points on movement and stamina, grab a handful of legendary weapons and armor that you can keep upgrading, and craft the one elixir that permanently raises your health. Coen is human by day and vampire by night, so your build spreads across three trees at once, and the fastest gains come from mixing them rather than committing to a single path.

Quick answer: Put your first two points into Mercurial Fervour (Witchcraft) and Shapeshift (Vampirism) for fast travel, then prioritize Endless Effort for stamina and Shred for bleed damage. Craft the Razkovniche Elixir in Oghasti for +20% human and +10% vampiric max health, and collect Durandal, Pieter’s Garb, and Ambrus’s Cuirass early since blacksmiths and witches can scale any gear to your level.

First skill points: movement, stamina, and bleed

Skills only unlock at a Shrine, and each point spent past the first rank of a skill costs more, plus time tokens on higher tiers. That makes your opening picks matter. Two of them exist purely to cut down travel time across a large map.

Mercurial Fervour sits in the Witchcraft tree and gives Coen daytime haste, briefly slowing the world around him so he moves faster. Shapeshift in the Vampirism tree turns him into a wolf at night for quick map crossings. Both are passive, and fully ranked with skill points alone (no time tokens), they let you run indefinitely without draining stamina.

After mobility, stamina is the single best investment. Endless Effort raises your stamina by up to 100% across both day and night, and deep stamina reserves are what carry you through soldier packs, Boyars, and eventually Brencis. Pair it with cost-reducers like Omniblock if you want your bar to last even longer.

For damage, Shred is the standout early Vampirism ability. It adds a 20% bleed chance to weapon and claw attacks at first unlock, then scales up both the chance and the bleed damage. Stinging Blade is a smaller but reliable boost, adding 5% weapon damage, then 10%, then 20% overall. Vigour raises max health by 10%, 20%, and eventually 50% once you find the later manuals.

A quick note on quick slots: unlocking skills like Vrakhiri Might (Vampirism), Forbidden Sigils (Witchcraft), and Master Fencer (Swordmastery) lets you equip more abilities at once. Since you configure separate Day and Night quick slots in the active abilities menu, having more equipped options in both cycles pays off in every fight.

How to unlock skills across the three trees

Spending points is only half the process. Each tree gates its skills differently, and knowing the requirement upfront saves you wasted trips.

TreeUsable whenUnlock requirement
SwordmasteryDay and nightManuals bought from instructors, plus boss and camp drops
WitchcraftDay onlyManuals from completing Ancient Circles and merchants
VampirismNight onlyCorruption from draining blood, quests, and Phials of Blood

To raise Corruption for the Vampirism tree, drain the blood of unsuspecting neutral creatures or victims with Voracious Bite, and use sneak or ambush drains on humans. Hastened Corruption speeds this up. Drink any Phial of Blood you pick up instead of hoarding it, since these often unlock a new skill outright. The Phial of Brencis’s Blood, for example, teaches the Piercing Shriek ability.

Swordmastery manuals become available once you unlock instructors like Ursul and Ocha, who sell skill books. Titles such as the Restless Blade Manual, Precision Manual, and Second Skin II Manual also drop from bosses and camp activities. Witchcraft manuals, including the Frugal Witchcraft Manual, come from clearing Ancient Circles.

Combat basics that make you hit above your level

Combat is a directional dueling system, not a mash-attack brawler. You aim attacks and blocks in specific directions, and timing your parries is what wins fights. Two mechanics let an early-game Coen fight aggressively.

A perfect block instantly interrupts any active player animation, even mid-swing. That means you can throw out an attack, block a threat the instant it appears, and immediately continue, letting you stay on the offensive without eating damage. Weapon arts and skills grant i-frames and either ignore or interrupt enemy actions, so they double as both damage and defense.

If the directional inputs feel stiff at first, omniattacks and omniblocks trigger on L1 or R1 with no direction, picking a direction for you at the cost of faster stamina drain. They work as training wheels while you learn. Your sword is usable at any time, while claws are gated to night, so lean on the blade early and add night tools as your Corruption climbs.

Legendary weapons and armor to grab early

Do not skip a legendary just because it looks underpowered later. Blacksmiths, armorers, and witches can upgrade any piece of gear with gold (Denarii), so an early legendary keeps scaling to your current level. That makes the following pieces worth the detour as soon as you can reach them.

ItemTypeWhere to get it
DurandalLegendary LongswordBroken bridge on the Western Slopes, in the valley below
Polished Long CleaverMaster LongswordTreasure map from Laslea Glen, dug up in a cave to the east
Pieter’s GarbLegendary day armorReward from Volk’s questline, dug up at Giant’s Pawns
Ambrus’s CuirassLegendary night armorDefeat the Boyar Ambrus
Mercenary’s GreavesLegendary leg armorBought from the Svartrou City armorer for 1,714 Denarii

Beyond these, large chests inside enemy camps regularly hold high-quality gear, so clearing camps pays off twice with loot and skill manuals.

How to get Durandal

Head west from Mertz’s Mill along the Western Slopes and locate the broken bridge.
Drop down into the valley below and clear out the wolves and ghosts guarding the area.
Loot the body at the bottom of the broken bridge to retrieve Durandal.

How to get the Polished Long Cleaver

Travel to Laslea Glen and head to the townhouse on the northeastern side. Defeat the bandits inside.
Loot the treasure map from the center of the building.
Follow the map to the cave to the east. Defeat the bear inside and dig up the chest to claim the sword.

How to get Pieter’s Garb

Go to the town of Maray to the southeast and speak to the alcohol merchant in the center. Buy the beer your father ordered for 200 Denarii.
Travel to the Ruined Hut northeast of Svartrou City to meet Volk. Complete his time-gated questline and defeat Volk, the Oath Breaker, which unlocks the Artery Strike skill and reveals the secret glade.
Travel to Giant’s Pawns in the northwest, climb to the top of the path, dig up the marked spot with a shovel, and open the chest to take Pieter’s Garb.

You confirm each pickup when the item appears in your inventory and, for the questlines, when the quest updates to complete. If a dig spot does nothing, you are missing the shovel or standing on the wrong marker. If Volk’s glade never appears, you have not yet finished his questline or beaten Volk, the Oath Breaker.

Craft the Razkovniche Elixir for permanent health

This is the single biggest early power spike outside of gear. The Razkovniche Elixir permanently grants +20% maximum human health and +10% maximum vampiric health. Brewing it is free, but it takes an in-game day and a short fight.

Travel to the ruined town of Oghasti, southwest of Svartrou City.
Investigate the potion maker’s house, read the recipe, and use Compel Soul on the nearby corpse to get the missing information.
Plant the seeds in the pots in the central room and feed them blood.
Wait one day, harvest the seeds, and defeat the specter that attacks when you do.
Take the seeds to Anca at the Crossroads Inn, east of Svartrou City, and she brews the elixir for free.

You know it worked when the health buffs apply to your bars after Anca brews it. If the seeds will not harvest, the in-game day has not passed yet, or you skipped feeding them blood.

Level fast and keep gold flowing

Because time only advances when you take meaningful story actions, exploring is free but each quest action spends part of your day or night. To gain XP and skill points quickly, clear side quests and the map activities revealed by towers, and drain humans for Corruption at every safe opportunity.

Gold funds all your gear upgrades, so protect your economy early. Bewitching Influence lowers buying prices and raises selling prices, which helps offset a later in-game edict that pushes all vendor costs up. Invest in it before that edict lands and your upgrade money stretches much further.

Treasure maps are another steady source of gear and materials. Find a map, track it, then dig up the marked chest. The Polished Long Cleaver above works exactly this way, and camps and tower chests hand out crafting recipes and early healing items like the Minor Mending Ointment.

Stack these together and Coen snowballs quickly. Mobility and stamina first, then a couple of upgradeable legendaries, the Razkovniche Elixir for a permanent health floor, and a gold engine to keep every piece scaled. From there the early hours open up, and you have the flexibility to spend your limited days on the fights and alliances that matter most.
