The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Get the Broken Sword of St. Mihai

Every quest step, Albertus's five riddle answers, and the crypt boss that drops the greatsword.

Every quest step, Albertus’s five riddle answers, and the crypt boss that drops the greatsword.

The Broken Sword of St. Mihai is the hilt of a weapon that was once carried by a warrior the church later canonized. In The Blood of Dawnwalker, it sits at the bottom of a sealed crypt beneath Svartrau Cathedral, and reaching it means chaining together three quests, a riddle with no map marker, and a boss fight against the saint himself.

Quick answer: Finish Anca’s Echoes of Silenced Bells to learn about Albertus, answer his five riddle prompts correctly in the Middens, then investigate the cathedral well, uncover St. Mihai’s memorial stone in the courtyard, and kill Mihai, Patron Saint of the Cathedral. The Broken Sword is loot on his body.

Broken Sword of St. Mihai stats and rewards

As dropped, the weapon is close to unusable in combat. It exists mainly as a quest item, and its real value is the roughly 1,000 XP and the extra skill point that completing A Monk and a Saint hands over.

Quest order: Echoes of Silenced Bells to A Monk and a Saint

Three quest names appear along this chain. Echoes of Silenced Bells is the prerequisite, Night Terrors triggers at the cathedral and points you at the well, and A Monk and a Saint is the one that ends with the sword.

Clear the prologue so Anca becomes available, then meet her at the old inn to open Echoes of Silenced Bells. Pick the dialogue options that agree to leave with her.
Travel with Anca through the fog to her convent and finish the quest objectives there. This is a straightforward escort and clear-out sequence.

Return to Anca’s house and sit through the reading section. She names a monk called Albertus and tells you roughly where he lives, which is what unlocks the next stage.

Albertus location in the Middens and the five riddle answers

The Middens is the slum district on the western edge of Svartrau City, and it is thick with undead dogs. Keep Focus Mode on and follow the yellow glyphs scrawled across the walls. They lead to a house that is completely covered in the same markings, which is where Albertus is.

Albertus is not lucid. Instead of talking, you pick up a piece of charcoal and write answers about St. Mihai’s legend to prove you know the story. Choose these in order.

#Answer to write
1Abelard the Sorrowful
2Svartrau plaza
3…his penance, the place of his redemption
4…never once set foot inside it
5St. Mihai, a great warrior, arrived at Vale Sangora…

Thank him when the sequence ends. Before you leave, sweep the pile of discarded junk in the room for the Herbal Remedies I Manual.

Svartrau Cathedral: the well, the catacombs, and the memorial stone

Head for the cathedral courtyard in Svartrau City. Howling from below starts Night Terrors and pulls you toward a well covered with a wooden guard. Note that several investigations here each burn 1 Time Segment, so do not arrive with your clock almost spent.

Lift the wooden cover and investigate the well. Climb down and crawl through the narrow passage at the bottom.
Kill the kobolds waiting in the tunnels. They are grouped and aggressive in the tight space, so fight them near the entrance rather than in the open chamber.
Investigate the corpse propped against the wall. The scene tells you that a crypt sits under St. Mihai’s memorial stone up in the courtyard, and it is the clue that formally opens A Monk and a Saint.

Push the boulder blocking the far passage and climb back up into the courtyard.

Finding Saint Mihai’s symbol inside the cathedral

Before the crypt will open, the objective asks you to search the cathedral grounds for the saint’s symbol. The front doors are not the way in.

Use shadow step to climb the exterior scaffolding on the side of the cathedral and slip in through the high window.

Investigate the three marked spots on the cathedral floor. They have to be cleared before the last interaction becomes available.
Climb the interior scaffolding and inspect the fresco labelled “Sanctus Mihai”. Several frescoes are reachable up there, and only that one advances the quest.

Opening St. Mihai’s crypt in the courtyard

Go back outside to the garden with the stone cross. The crypts around it are buried under leaves and dirt, and Coen has to sweep each one before you know what is underneath. Stand facing the cross and interact with the third memorial stone from the left, the one set at the front between the tree on the right and the crypt with a cross for a headstone on the left. Coen tells you immediately whether it is the right one, and clearing the correct stone costs 1 Time Segment before he shifts the block and exposes the passage.

Mihai, Patron Saint of the Cathedral boss fight

Drop into the crypt and inspect the hidden wall to reveal the cell where Mihai has been sealed. He is a Dawnwalker as well, which is why he is still moving.

His pattern is short. When he lunges, the follow-up attacks are fast and unblockable, so roll rather than guard. He also floods the room with heavy fog and then comes in from the side with a flanking strike, so keep circling instead of standing still and waiting to read him. Everything else he throws out is punishable between lunges.

Kill him and the Broken Sword of St. Mihai appears as loot. If it is still daytime, you can also compel his spirit, and picking up the Worn Sheathe and the Broken Chains fills in what was actually done to him. Sweep the cell in Focus Mode too. Mihai’s Journal is in there, and it names the two things needed to make the weapon whole again.

How to confirm the quest completed

A Monk and a Saint closes out with roughly 1,000 XP and one skill point, and the Broken Sword of St. Mihai shows up in your inventory as a Superior Greatsword. If it has not appeared, the usual causes are narrow. The riddle answers were not all correct, so Albertus never pointed you at Svartrau plaza. The three investigation spots inside the cathedral were skipped, so the Sanctus Mihai fresco stayed inert. Or the wrong memorial stone was cleared, in which case Coen says so and you can simply try the next one.

On its own the hilt is not worth equipping. It becomes the starting material for Forge It Anew, the follow-up chain that has you gather three Silver Sword Shards scattered across Vale Sangora, hand everything to the Uriash blacksmith for the Restored Sword of St. Mihai, and finally temper the blade into the Imbued Sword of St. Mihai, a level 21 Legendary Greatsword.
