Fat is one of the base food materials in The Last Caretaker, and it becomes a bottleneck fast. Almost every worthwhile recipe in the Food Processor asks for it, so a shortage stalls everything you are trying to grow. The material itself is common, weighs 0.2 Kg, stacks to 100, and is described in-game as something that “provides energy, supports cell growth, and helps absorb certain nutrients.”
Quick answer: Drop Bio Waste into a Soilforge that is connected to power and supplied with Fresh Water, then collect the Fat that falls on the ground behind the machine.
Soilforge requirements: level 10, power, and Fresh Water
The Soilforge is the only machine that turns organics into Fat. It sits at Tier 1 in the skill tree but does not appear until you hit character level 10, and unlocking it costs a single skill point. Its description is straightforward about what it does, listing that it “Processes Food Materials into Bio Waste, Fat, etc.”
Building it is not the end of the setup. The Soilforge will sit idle unless it has both an electrical connection and a supply of Fresh Water, and Fresh Water has to be produced by a Water Purifier. Get the purifier running before you place the forge, otherwise you will be standing next to a finished machine waiting on water.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Skill unlock | Level 10, 1 skill point, Tier 1 |
| Power | Connected to your electricity grid |
| Water | Fresh Water, supplied by a Water Purifier |
| Input | Bio Waste (also accepts Bio Light and Bio Seaweed) |
| Output location | Ground behind the machine, not your inventory |

Bio Waste is the raw input for Fat, and the game labels it with a joke acronym on the item card, “P.O.O.P. Potentially Offensive Organic Product.” Its recycling entry spells out the payoff directly, listing Fat as a possible recycling output. There are two practical ways to stock up on it.

The passive method is looting points of interest as you explore. Anything you sweep up while working through objectives adds to the pile, but every location holds a finite amount of easily reachable material, so a place you have already cleared will not refill itself on demand.

The repeatable method is night diving. Creatures spawn underwater once the night cycle starts, and killing them has a chance to drop Bio Waste. Bring your best weapon, head to deep water after dark, and clear spawns until you have a stockpile worth processing. The same trips also produce Bioorganic, which feeds the Omega-3 chain, so one farming run covers two materials.

Tip: Keep a Fishing Net deployed while you are out on the water. It pulls in bio matter passively and costs you nothing once it is set.
Processing Bio Waste into Fat

Why your Soilforge is not producing Fat
You know the run worked when Fat items appear on the floor behind the forge and register in your inventory as a COMMON material once collected. If nothing shows up, the cause is almost always one of a short list.
- The Soilforge is not unlocked yet, which means you are still under level 10 or have not spent the skill point.
- The machine has no power connection.
- Fresh Water is empty or was never plumbed in.
- You are checking the front panel instead of the ground behind the machine, where the output actually lands.
- You loaded the wrong organic. Bio Waste is what produces Fat; other bio types convert into different materials.
One more point of confusion worth clearing up. Fat is made in the Soilforge, not the Food Processor. The Food Processor is the machine that consumes Fat later, so trying to feed raw Bio Waste into it will get you nowhere.
What Fat is used for in the Food Processor
Fat is a mid-chain ingredient rather than something you hoard. Once you have a stack, it goes into the Food Processor as part of the tube meals you feed into incubation.
| Food | Trait focus |
|---|---|
| High-Fat | Weight |
| Nutri-Core | Balanced |
| Immune Boost | Balanced |
| Mind Surge | Intellect |
| Physique Fuel | Height |
| Bone-Fortify | Height |
| Nanite Infusion | Height |
High-Fat gives a sense of the scale of consumption. It needs 5 Carbohydrate, 5 Protein, and 8 Fat per craft, plus 500 Wh of Electricity and 100 L of Fresh Water, and the recipe unlocks at Tier 10. Eight Fat per batch adds up quickly, which is why one solid night of farming is worth more than opportunistic looting.
Other bio materials and what they convert into
Since you will be hauling mixed organics back from every dive, it helps to know what each type turns into before you decide what to process.
| Organic | Converts into |
|---|---|
| Bio Waste | Fat |
| Bio Organic | Omega-3 |
| Bio Light | Vitamin D |
| Bio Seaweed | Carbohydrate |
| Bio Dark | Calcium |
| Bio Flesh | Bioregulator, Nanite Nutrient, Mitochondrial Amplifier |
Once the Soilforge is unlocked and wired, Fat production becomes a background chore rather than a project. Keep the Water Purifier topped up, dive at night when you need volume, and empty the ground behind the forge every time you pass it.
