Valheim 1.0 quietly changed how the world outside your starting area looks. Alongside the Deep North, Iron Gate added “alt biomes” — over 30 alternate versions of the existing biomes that reskin and repopulate familiar terrain. A Black Forest can arrive covered in stumps, a Meadows can be swarming with fireflies and deer, and a Mountain can hold upgraded tower ruins. The catch is that none of them generate near spawn.
Quick answer: Alt biomes only generate in terrain past a set distance from the world center (500m at the earliest). To locate them, open the console, type devcommands, then run findbiome followed by the variation name — for example findbiome menhir — to pin every instance on your map.
How alt biomes generate in Valheim 1.0
An alt biome is not a new biome. It is a variation layered onto an existing one, changing vegetation density, props, structures, weather rules, and which creatures spawn there. A Meadows with the Raspberry variation is still Meadows, with the same temperature and the same progression tier — it just has far more raspberry bushes in it.
Each variation has a roll chance when a qualifying chunk of terrain is generated. Nearly every one sits at 20 percent. The exception is Dark Meadows, which rolls at 50 percent once you are far enough out. Variations can also stack, so a single stretch of Meadows can come out as Birch, Small Tree, Raspberry, Mushroom, and Dandelion at once. Those overlaps are the reason some outer Meadows feel absurdly resource-dense compared to the ones near spawn.
Distance from the world center is the gate. Nothing rolls inside 500m, and the heavier variations wait until 1,500m to 2,000m or beyond. Because Mistlands itself only starts generating around 5,900m out, its variations realistically show up from roughly 6,000m, even though the underlying threshold is lower.

Meadows has nine variations, more than any other biome. Most are harmless resource boosts, but two change the danger level in opposite directions.
| Variation | What changes | Min. distance |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry | Concentrated raspberry bushes | 500m |
| Dandelion | Concentrated dandelions | 500m |
| SmallTree | Concentrated small tree saplings | 500m |
| Birch | Concentrated birch trees | 500m |
| Mushroom | Concentrated mushroom patches (also Black Forest) | 500m |
| Lantern | Lost standing Deep North lanterns (also Swamp, Mountain, Black Forest, Plains) | 500m |
| Menhir | Horn-shaped stone formations and Skeletons (also Plains) | 750m |
| Peaceful | Fireflies, bears, ordinary and white deer; blocks eleven hostile creature types | 1,000m |
| Dark | Lowered terrain, Draugr villages, Draugr Elites, hostile weather restrictions | 1,900m |
Peaceful Meadows is the standout for base building. It runs blue fireflies at night, has heavy deer and boar density, and blocks eleven hostile spawn types outright. Dark Meadows is its opposite, dropping the terrain, adding Draugr settlements, and shifting the weather toward hostile conditions.
Black Forest alt biomes
Black Forest also gets nine variations, and they swing between free resources and real threat. The Ruin version is the one to approach carefully: the green wisps drifting between its sunken towers and broken walls are sleeping ghosts, and they wake up when you get close.

| Variation | What changes | Min. distance |
|---|---|---|
| Blueberry | High concentration of blueberries | 500m |
| Kalhygge | Small clear-cut area full of stumps | 500m |
| Ruin | Sunken towers, ruined walls, sleeping ghosts and skeletons | 500m |
| Mushroom | Concentrated mushroom patches | 500m |
| Lantern | Standing Deep North lanterns | 500m |
| Troll | Troll-focused forest | 750m |
| Rock | Heavy rock concentration, far fewer trees | 750m |
| Pinetree | High concentration of pine trees | 750m |
| Root | Wild roots from the Elder fight and elite Greydwarfs | 2,000m |
Troll Forest raises troll density enough that it is worth bringing a bow, while Rock Forest strips out most of the trees in favour of stone nodes. Root Black Forest sits furthest out at 2,000m and covers the ground in the same writhing roots the Elder uses.

Swamp, Mountain, and Plains variations
The mid-game biomes get fewer variations, but they hit harder. Swamp has six, Mountain has four, and Plains has six. Bones is shared between Swamp, Plains, and Mistlands.
| Variation | Biome and effect | Min. distance |
|---|---|---|
| Hut | Swamp — swamp huts, wooden walkways, altered trees | 1,500m |
| Bog | Swamp — evil statues, dead trees, Abominations | 1,500m |
| Bat | Swamp — wild swamp bats | 2,000m |
| Abomination | Swamp — concentrated Abomination region | 2,000m |
| Bones | Swamp, Plains, Mistlands — huge bones and poison Skeletons | 2,000m |
| Wolf | Mountain — high wolf concentration | 2,000m |
| Drake | Mountain — high drake concentration | 2,000m |
| Fortress | Mountain — upgraded tower ruins with mountain skeletons | 2,000m |
| Lox | Plains — high lox concentration | 2,000m |
| Goblin | Plains — additional camps and huts | 2,000m |
| Death | Plains — tar pits and Deathsquitos | 2,000m |
The Hut Swamp is the friendlier of the two structural Swamp variants, opening up the terrain with raised wooden paths. Bog goes the other way with evil statues, dead trees, and Abominations.

Fortress is the rarest-feeling Mountain roll. Instead of the usual broken stonework, it places upgraded tower ruins guarded by blue skeletons, which makes it worth pinning as a landmark even if you do not clear it immediately.

On the Plains side, Goblin does not simply add more Fuling villages. It places smaller huts occupied by Fuling shamans and berserkers, so the encounter difficulty per building is higher than a normal camp.

Mistlands alt biomes
Mistlands has seven variations, and two of them meaningfully change how the biome plays rather than just how it looks. Rockless rearranges the usual cliffs and rock placements, producing slopes you can actually walk up instead of the vertical walls the biome is known for. Hare areas swap the usual threat profile for dense hare spawns.
| Variation | What changes |
|---|---|
| Rockless | Replaces normal cliffs and rocks with altered, more traversable placements |
| Trees | Denser Yggdrasil shoots and roots |
| Swords | Giant ancient swords, helmets, and ancient armor |
| Hare | Hare-focused spawns |
| BroodSwarm | Seeker Brood swarms |
| Bones | Huge bones and poison Skeletons |
The Swords variation is the one to prioritise if you are farming. It concentrates giant swords, helmets, and ancient armor nodes in a single area, which cuts down the wandering that normally eats a Mistlands trip.
How to find alt biomes with the findbiome console command
findbiome followed by a base biome name to tag every instance of it on your map. Spelling matters — the Swamp entry is plural.devcommands
findbiome blackforest
findbiome swamps
findbiome menhir
findbiome fortress mountain
Why the command returns nothing
If no pins appear, there are only a few likely reasons. The variation name may be misspelled, since the command expects the internal name rather than a descriptive one. The variation may also not have rolled anywhere in the terrain your world has generated — every roll is a chance, not a guarantee, and the outer distance requirements mean nothing qualifies near spawn.
Long-running worlds are the other common case. Terrain you have already explored is locked in as it was generated, so alt biomes can only appear in ground the world has not built yet. On an old save, that means heading well past your existing map edge, or starting a fresh world if you want the full spread.
Note: alt biomes do not change progression. A Peaceful Meadows is still a starting-tier zone and a Goblin Plains is still endgame-adjacent, so treat the variation as a change in what a region contains, not in when you should go there.
For most players the practical takeaway is simple. Once you are more than 2,000m from the world center, the map stops repeating itself, and it becomes worth sailing further just to see what version of a biome you get.
