Valheim: How to Get Bloodgold in the Deep North

Bloodgold is the metal that gates the highest tier of gear in Valheim, added with the 1.0 update and tied entirely to the Deep North biome. You cannot mine it from a rock or pull it out of a chest. It only exists after you break down the petrified remains of a Gammeltroll and run the leftover material through a furnace.

Quick answer: Kill a Gammeltroll until it petrifies, blow apart its body with Ember Charges to drop Petrified Tissue, then place that Tissue with Coal in a Blast Furnace and wait about 30 seconds for Bloodgold to appear.

What you need before farming Bloodgold

The whole process depends on Ember Charges. These throwable explosives are the only way to crack open a petrified Gammeltroll, and you will also use them to break the biome’s ice sheets. Make sure you have a stack crafted and ready before you go hunting.

You also need a Blast Furnace at your base and a supply of Coal, since that is the fuel pairing that turns Petrified Tissue into Bloodgold. Reaching the Deep North itself is the final prerequisite. It sits at the far northern edge of every world and is meant to be tackled after the Ashlands.

Farming Petrified Tissue from Gammeltrolls

Gammeltrolls are the massive ancient trolls that roam the Deep North surface. They are not bosses, but they hit hard enough that a single attack can drop you in one or two blows. Treat every encounter with care.

Track down a Gammeltroll wandering the frozen landscape and fight it. Lean on dodging and blocking, and watch your Stamina closely so you never get caught mid-attack without a way to escape.

Keep attacking until the Gammeltroll dies and petrifies, turning into a solid stone-like structure. This petrified corpse is what you actually harvest, not a loot drop from the kill itself.

Throw Ember Charges to blow the legs off the petrified body. Destroying it this way breaks the corpse apart and drops Petrified Tissue in its place.

You will find these colossal petrified corpses scattered across the biome even outside of active fights, and they serve as the primary source of Petrified Tissue. Collect the Tissue and carry it back to your base.

Smelting Petrified Tissue into Bloodgold

Open your Blast Furnace and load it with the Petrified Tissue you gathered.

Add Coal to the furnace as fuel. The Tissue will not process without it.

Wait roughly 30 seconds. The furnace outputs a Bloodgold bar, which you collect from the front like any other smelted metal.

You will know it worked when Bloodgold bars appear in the furnace’s output slot. If nothing comes out, the two most common reasons are missing Coal or having placed something other than Petrified Tissue inside.

What Bloodgold is used for

Bloodgold is the foundation for the Deep North’s endgame weapons, armor, and ammunition. Melee gear and armor pieces are crafted at the biome’s dedicated stations, while ranged ammunition and specialty items pull from the Black Forge. As one example, the Frostfire Greataxe is made at the Galdr Table using 20 Bloodgold, a Nord Greataxe, and a Frostfire Essence.

The Bloodgold Arrow is worth calling out for archers, since it carries 92 Pierce and 15 Knockback at a weight of just 0.1, making it the sharpest ammunition in the game. Because Bloodgold is the first step toward every Nord-tier weapon and armor set, it is worth building up a steady stockpile as you clear out the Deep North.
