Valheim: How to Make a Cauldron

The Cauldron takes 10 Tin and a nearby Forge, and it will not cook anything without a lit fire underneath.

Grilled meat on a Campfire will keep you alive in the Meadows, but it will not carry you much further. Every multi-ingredient dish in Valheim — stews, soups, jerky, sausages, and every mead base — runs through the Cauldron. It is a cheap build once you reach the Bronze Age, and the only real trick is that it needs fire beneath it to function.

Quick answer: Smelt 10 Tin, build a Forge, then place the Cauldron with your Hammer from the Crafting tab and put a lit Campfire or Hearth directly underneath it.

The build itself is trivially cheap. What gates it is metal progression, since Tin only becomes useful after you have a Smelter running.

Tin ore sits in shallow deposits along the shorelines of the Black Forest, so you can often mine it without pushing deep into the biome. You need an Antler Pick or better to break the deposits, which means Eikthyr has to go down first. Raw ore then goes into a Smelter to become Tin bars.

How the Cauldron recipe unlocks

The recipe does not appear just because you own Tin ore. Two things have to be true at once: you must have a Forge built, and you must pick up a smelted Tin bar for the first time. Collect the bar out of the Smelter with a Forge already standing, and the Cauldron drops into your Hammer’s Crafting tab immediately.

If the entry is still missing, one of those two conditions is unmet. The usual cause is having smelted Tin before ever building the Forge, in which case smelting and picking up another bar fixes it.

Building and placing the Cauldron

Stand inside the working radius of your Forge with 10 Tin bars in your inventory. The Cauldron cannot be placed anywhere the Forge does not reach.
Equip the Hammer and open the build menu, then switch to the Crafting tab and highlight the Cauldron. Its description reads “Crafting station – Combine ingredients and cook yourself a tasty meal, important for all vikings!”

Pick a flat spot with clearance around it and place the Cauldron. You do not need a fire present yet — fire is only required to use the station, not to build it. A “New crafting station” notification confirms it registered.
Build a Campfire directly underneath it. A Campfire costs 5 Stone and 2 Wood, and a Hearth works just as well if you want something permanent indoors.

Feed the fire with Wood so it stays lit, then walk up to the Cauldron and look for the “E Use” prompt.

Fix “You need to have a lit fire below the cooking station”

This is the one error nearly everyone hits. Interacting with a Cauldron that has nothing burning beneath it throws the message “You need to have a lit fire below the cooking station,” and the crafting window will not open at all.

Three things cause it. The fire is not directly below the Cauldron, the fire has burned out because nobody added Wood, or rain has doused an uncovered Campfire. The Cauldron itself takes no rain damage, but the fire under it does need shelter to keep going reliably.

Confirming the Cauldron works

A working Cauldron opens straight into a crafting window with a Craft tab, exactly like the Workbench or Forge. At level 1 you should see Boar jerky x2, Carrot soup, Cooked egg, Deer stew, Minced meat sauce, and Queen’s jam x4, along with mead bases and fishing bait recipes if you have the ingredients.

Unlike a Cooking Station, output is instant — the finished item lands in your inventory as soon as you craft it, with no waiting or flipping. Tip: hold Shift while crafting to make five at a time.

Cauldron upgrades and recipe levels

The Cauldron goes up to level 6, and each level is unlocked by building a separate structure near it rather than spending materials on the Cauldron itself. All of them must sit within range to count.

LevelStructureMaterials
2Spice rack3 Dandelion, 2 Carrot, 5 Mushroom, 3 Thistle, 3 Turnip
3Butcher’s table2 Ancient bark, 4 Corewood, 4 Finewood, 2 Silver
4Pots and pans5 Iron, 5 Copper, 5 Black metal, 10 Finewood
5Mortar and pestle8 Black marble, 6 Finewood, 4 Corewood
6Rolling pins and cutting boards8 Ashwood, 6 Finewood, 4 Flametal

The cost curve is steep on purpose. The Spice rack is all farm produce and forage, but the Butcher’s table needs Silver from the Mountains, Pots and pans needs Black metal from the Plains, and the last two pull Black marble from the Mistlands and Flametal from the Ashlands. Note that the Spice rack and Pots and pans hang rather than sit on the floor, so leave a beam or wall surface next to your Cauldron when you lay out the kitchen.

Each level opens a new tier of dishes — Sausages, Serpent stew, and Turnip stew at level 2, Wolf jerky and Eyescream at 3, Fish wraps and Blood pudding at 4, then the Mistlands and Ashlands recipes at 5 and 6. Build the Cauldron the moment you have Tin bars to spare, and add the upgrade structures as each biome opens up.
