The Ferrofluid Flask is your main way to stay alive in Valor Mortis, and each sip starts out restoring only 50 health. Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrades change that. Spend them at a Lantern and every flask heals for more, which matters a lot once the game starts throwing bosses and poison arenas at you. They sit in chests across nearly every region, come from one side quest, and show up in Louis’s shop over the course of the story.

Quick answer: At a Lantern, choose UPGRADE FERROFLUID FLASK, then Upgrade Ferrofluid Potency, and spend a Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade; each step adds 10 healing, up to a maximum of 140. Raising one flask from 50 to 140 takes 24 upgrades, found in chests, from one side quest, and in Louis’s Laboratoire.

How much each Power Upgrade heals

A new Ferrofluid Flask restores 50 health—half of your starting 100. After you first take damage, the game tells you to press F to drink, reducing the count shown in the bottom-left HUD slot by one. Resting at a Lantern or restarting at a checkpoint after death replenishes your flasks to full.

Each Power Upgrade adds 10 healing per step. Early steps cost one upgrade, and the price climbs as you go. Here is the full scaling from base to the 140 cap.

Add it all up and it takes 24 Power Upgrades to carry a single flask from 50 all the way to 140 healing. Separate from this, Empty Ferrofluid Flasks raise how many charges you can hold, so the two upgrade types work independently. For those, see all 9 Empty Ferrofluid Flask locations.

Where Power Upgrades are found, region by region

Most Power Upgrades come from chests, and they are spread unevenly across the map. The Fortress holds the largest share. Here is how the chest hauls break down.

One more comes from a side quest, and Louis’s Laboratoire stocks three across the story. Every chest is marked on the Valor Mortis map.

Buying from Louis’s Laboratoire

Louis sells Power Upgrades at his workbench in the Abandoned Church for 3,000 Catalysts each. One is available from the start, a second unlocks in chapter 5 (Crime), and a third in chapter 9 (In Ruins), for three across the story. Check his stock between chapters, since it refreshes as you progress.

How to upgrade your Ferrofluid Flask at a Lantern (step by step)

Every Ferrofluid Flask upgrade happens at a Lantern, so bring the right item to the one nearest you and work through the menu below.

Walk up to any Lantern and press E at the “[E] REST” prompt. The Lantern menu opens with LEVEL UP / TRAVEL / UPGRADE FERROFLUID FLASK / LEAVE.

Rest at any Lantern and pick UPGRADE FERROFLUID FLASK.
Choose UPGRADE FERROFLUID FLASK. The page is titled “UPGRADE FERROFLUID FLASK”, with two upgrade icons stacked on the left and a large picture of the flask on the right.
Read the panel. It shows “Ferrofluid Flask” and “A magnetic fluid that seals wounds and replenishes Health.” A new game starts at “50 Ferrofluid Potency” and “3 Flask Charges”. Two small counters at the top right track how many Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrades and Empty Ferrofluid Flasks you carry.
Point at the top icon, “Upgrade Ferrofluid Potency”. Its “Upgrade Requirements” line lists “Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade” as what you hold over what it needs, reading 0/1 for the first step.

The other icon, labeled “Increase Maximum Flask charges”, requires an “Empty Ferrofluid Flask”; the displayed amount is 0/1.

Without the item, the upgrade reads “Unavailable” in red with “Insufficient Materials”. With the item in hand, hold the left mouse button on the icon; the bottom-right prompt is “(HOLD) UPGRADE” with a mouse glyph, and Esc is BACK.
After upgrading, the panel displays the replacement value. Each Potency upgrade adds 10 per step; each Maximum Flask charges upgrade adds one flask.

Potency or more charges: what each upgrade needs

A flask’s potency determines the Health it restores, and each increase uses Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrades: the first costs one, with later increases requiring more. Maximum Flask charges controls your carried flask count; each added charge uses one Empty Ferrofluid Flask. Check where to find Empty Ferrofluid Flasks before spending one. Chests can contain both items, and you can also buy them in Louis’s Laboratoire shop. There, a Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade sells for 3,000 Catalysts (“Use it at the Lantern to increase the healing power of Ferrofluid Flasks.”) and an Empty Ferrofluid Flask costs 5,000 Catalysts (“Use it to increase the number of Ferrofluid Flask at the Lantern.”). Neither item has an effect when collected or purchased; use this Lantern menu to spend it.
