Each race in VV: ULTIMATUM unlocks its signature power through a different progression system. Shinigami earn Shikai through meditation and an Inner World trial, Hollows evolve toward Resurreccion through a fixed evolution chain, and Quincy build toward Schrift abilities. The fastest route to any of them comes from hitting the exact level gates and farming the correct targets instead of grinding blindly.
Quick answer: Reach Level 25 and meditate during a Spirit Whisper to begin Shikai (Level 35 for the final gate); as a Hollow, evolve Fishbone → Menos → Adjuchas → Vasto Lorde and reach 70 PK points before pressing L for Arrancar and Resurreccion; reroll and master any unlocked ability with a crafted Hogyoku.

Race power systems and their unlock requirements
Before chasing a power, know which system your race uses and what gates it. Shinigami progress through ranks and missions, Hollows progress through evolution stages, and Quincy build spirit weapons toward Schrift. The core requirements break down like this.
| Race | Signature power | Main gate | Key system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shinigami | Shikai | Level 25 start, Level 35 final | Meditation and Spirit Whispers |
| Hollow | Resurreccion | Reach Vasto Lorde, 70 PK points | Evolution chain and Hollow Traits |
| Quincy | Schrift | Unlock the power first | Spirit weapon and ability rolls |

Shikai is the first major power spike for Soul Reapers. The groundwork is the Soul Society route, which runs through completing Main Story Quests, buying a Soul Pager from Kou at the Missions NPC, and stacking Mission Tickets. Tickets drop from story quests, daily quests, enemies, treasure chests, and mission rewards, so collect them as you play rather than farming them in one block.

Inner World bell riddle answers
Inside the Inner World, you follow blue orbs to white bells. Each bell triggers a combat challenge or a riddle. Solved bells turn blue and stay saved, so you do not have to repeat them. The correct riddle answers are fixed.
| Riddle | Answer |
|---|---|
| “I cannot talk, but I always reply…” | 2 – An Echo |
| “What gets broken without being held?” | 1 – A Promise |
| “What is always in front of you…?” | 1 – The Future |
Shikai boss fight phases
The final test is a fight against your own Zanpakuto spirit, which mirrors your skills, passives, and stats. A messy build makes a messy fight, so enter with a clean route and enough survivability for the regeneration phase.
| Phase | Main threat | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1: Mirror Match | Your own combos and passives | Bait cooldowns, parry cleanly, punish unsafe strings |
| Phase 2: Awakening | New moves plus more aggressive Speed use | Focus perfect parries |
| Phase 3: Final Regeneration | Regenerates four full bars below three health bars | Play for survival and sustained DPS |
Defeating the spirit unlocks your released Zanpakuto. You confirm the unlock by meditating again, talking to the NPC, and interacting with your weapon silhouette in the Inner World, which opens the Ability tab. If you lose the fight, you return to the main world and must earn more Shikai EXP through whispers before re-entering.

Hollow: Evolve to Vasto Lorde and unlock Resurreccion
The Hollow line is linear, and timing matters more than raw power. Each stage adds trait slots, and pressing L to remove your mask early permanently caps how many traits you keep. Only Vasto Lorde grants all four slots before you become an Arrancar and gain access to Resurreccion.
| Stage | Trait slots | Key unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Fishbone (Base) | 2 | Starting form |
| Menos | 2 | Can press L (becomes Menoscar, avoid) |
| Adjuchas | 3 | Cero and Roar abilities |
| Vasto Lorde | 4 | Final trait slot, max customization |
| Arrancar | Locked at current count | Weapon and Resurreccion |
Pick the Hollow faction after the tutorial and choose a starting type, which decides your later Resurreccion fight difficulty. Gorilla is the safest pick with the easiest trial, Lizard trades defense for mobility, Centipede has one of the hardest fights, and Turtle’s slow attacks complicate the encounter.

Hollow Traits are permanent bonuses earned by consuming defeated Hollows, and you can reject any you do not want. Lock in your ideal combination at Vasto Lorde while all four slots are open, because they become very hard to change after the mask comes off. Strong picks include Iron Skin for survivability, Deadly Claws for damage, and Wings for mobility.
You know the evolution worked when the transformation sequence plays and four active trait slots appear. If it does not trigger, you have not reached 70 PK yet, which usually means you are farming invalid targets like Arrancars. Reaching Level 35 and investing 50 or more skill points before removing your mask makes the Resurreccion trial much easier.
Quincy: Building toward Schrift abilities
Quincy progression centers on spirit weapons and Schrift abilities rather than missions or evolution stages. The Schrift power system uses Reishi-based combat, and the ability screen for rerolling your Schrift only becomes available after you have unlocked the power itself. Until then, focus on leveling and skill tree investment so the abilities have enough support to perform.

Level up and reroll mastery faster with the Hogyoku
Once a power is unlocked, progression shifts to mastering and tuning it. Ability Tokens manage and reroll Shikai, Schrift, or Resurreccion powers from the ability screen, but hold them until your stat plan is stable so you do not waste rolls on powers your final build drops. For deeper changes, the Hogyoku is the late-game tool.
Hogyoku Shards drop from high-difficulty mission chests and Rift chests, with Rift chests giving the best rates. Forge them into a Hogyoku at a crafting station to open seven wish options. The wishes that matter for ability mastery are listed below.
| Wish | Effect |
|---|---|
| 1 | Relocate build points (stat reset only) |
| 2 | Seven experimental shards (Shikai/Schrift/Res weapon form reroll) |
| 3 | Seven ability rolls (ability type reroll) |
| 4 | About 5,000 tokens |
| 5 | Reroll all 4 Hollow traits |
| 6 | Ultimate mastery on one technique |
| 7 | Refund toolbar skills (partial skill reset) |
Note: Experimental shards from wish #2 reroll only your weapon appearance, which is separate from the ability type reroll in wish #3. The core weapon identity stays tied to the spirit you defeated, so a casual swap is not possible. Resetting skill points also never returns consumed skill essences, so reset before investing rare ones.
VV: ULTIMATUM gives one free full build reset before Level 20 that refunds build points, attributes, and skill tree choices at once. If your build feels wrong early, use it immediately. After Level 20, a full reset requires a crafted item at Level 70 from boss material grinding, so plan your path before spending points.
The pattern across all three races is the same. Hit the exact level gate, farm the targets that actually count, and respond to triggers like Spirit Whispers or evolution prompts at the right moment. Locking in traits and abilities only when you have full slots and a stable build is what separates a fast unlock from a long regrind.
