Start the quest at Thousand-Buddha Vale, clear the chase trial, pick a cat, and claim Echo Jade plus the Companion System.

Whiskered Trouble is an exploration side quest in Where Winds Meet that hands you your first cat companion and switches on the Companion System. It runs in Sundara Land, inside the Qinghe region, and centers on the Thousand-Buddha Vale area. The full sequence moves through a rooftop chase trial, a quick chat with the Wildspeaker, a short challenge tied to the cat you pick, and a wrap-up that introduces the companion menu.

Quick answer: Teleport to the Thousand-Buddha Vale Boundary Stone, walk to the gold marker to trigger the cutscene, finish the Cloud Top Chase Challenge, talk to the Wildspeaker, choose a cat and beat its challenge, then open the Companion Page and claim your first reward to end the quest.

How to start Whiskered Trouble in Thousand-Buddha Vale

The quest does not appear until you reach the right spot. Use fast travel to the Thousand-Buddha Vale Boundary Stone, then head toward the gold marker on the map. Approaching that marker plays an opening cutscene that begins the quest.

If the cutscene does not fire, you are likely not close enough to the marker. Stand directly on it rather than near the edge, since the trigger is the proximity to that point, not the teleport itself.

Clear the Cloud Top Chase Challenge

After the opening cutscene, interact with the glowing red sword to begin the Cloud Top Chase Challenge.
Use Cloud Steps to climb the side of the mountain. Follow the trail of blue fire as your guide upward, so you stay on the intended route.
Keep following the blue fire to the final point at the Meow Meow Temple. Reaching the temple completes the challenge and plays the next cutscene.

Talk to the Wildspeaker and Meow Meow

Once the cutscene ends, speak with the Wildspeaker. Then talk to Meow Meow to step in and settle the cats’ argument. After that, speak with the cats themselves so the quest can move to the companion choice.

Choose a cat and complete its challenge

Once the cats reach their decision, you pick the one you want as a companion. Selecting a cat teleports you to where its challenge takes place. Each cat has its own task, and they differ sharply in difficulty.

CatChallengeObjective
MaverickCat Chase with Lightness SkillsChase the cat to the waypoint in the mountain within 1 minute
ScarUnstoppable Bamboo CutChop down 15 bamboo stalks within 30 seconds
PuddingNone requiredPudding lies down and gives up, so you win automatically
DuchessUnavailableCannot be taken as a companion yet

For Maverick and Scar, interact with the sword at the challenge location to begin the timed task. If you want the fastest path, Pudding requires no real effort because she simply concedes.

Note: Duchess is not selectable for now, so do not plan around taking her as your companion in this quest.

Unlock the Companion System and finish the quest

After winning the challenge, take your chosen cat with you. This unlocks the Companion System.
Call the cat to you and take your first photo with it when prompted.
Open the Companion Page from the menu and follow the prompts to browse the different pages.
Claim your first reward from the companion menu. The quest ends once you have fully explored the menu and collected that reward.

You will know the quest is done when the companion menu has been fully opened, and the first reward is in your inventory. The quest closes out at that point, with your new cat now summonable through the companion controls.
