Making Repairs sends you looking for Sturdy Lumber, and the wood is not scattered across the open forest the way most gathering objectives are. Every pile you need sits underground, inside a crypt in Shadowvale, guarded by spiders and cultists that hit hard enough to matter at the level you pick the quest up.
Quick answer: Head southwest through Shadowvale in Whispering Forest, enter the cellar beneath the stone building, and loot the Lumber Piles on the floor of the crypt.
Where Sturdy Lumber spawns in Whispering Forest
Sturdy Lumber comes from ground objects called Lumber Piles, not from enemy drops. Killing Tarnished Zealots, Drudges or Shadowvale Lurchers will never advance the objective, so treat every fight on the way in as an obstacle rather than a source.

Open your map and quest log before you set off. Shadowvale sits in the southwest of Whispering Forest, and the crypt is the stone structure you reach after pushing through the ruins in that corner.

Dealing with Shadowvale Lurchers in the crypt
Past the first room, the crypt opens into webbed corridors patrolled by Shadowvale Lurchers. These are the toughest thing between you and the wood, and they are the main reason the quest stalls for players who arrive underlevelled.
Fight the Lurchers one at a time. The corridors are tight, and the barrel-filled side rooms hold extra spiders that will join in if you pull from the wrong angle.
Collecting the remaining Lumber Piles
The rest of the piles are spread along the corridors and side rooms, so you will be moving between fights rather than farming one spot. Approach each pile from the direction with the fewest nearby spiders, and let the gathering cast finish before you step away.
A few habits make the run far smoother:
- Hug corridor walls to avoid waking patrols you do not need to kill.
- Clear a room fully before looting, so nothing interrupts the gathering cast.
- Check the floor in each side room, since piles are easy to miss against the stone.
- Retreat back up the corridor if two Lurchers stick to you at once.
Confirming the objective is complete
Watch the quest tracker rather than your bags. Each looted Lumber Pile updates the Sturdy Lumber count on screen, and once the counter reaches its target the objective is marked as complete in the quest log. At that point you can leave the crypt and turn the quest in without gathering anything else.
Not to be confused with the Grizzly Hills quest of the same name
There is a separate Making Repairs in Grizzly Hills, a Horde daily PvP quest handed out by Lurz at the Blue Sky Logging Grounds. That one asks for 4 Grooved Cogs, 3 Notched Sprockets and 2 High Tension Springs picked up off the ground near the shredders, and it rewards gold plus 250 reputation with the Warsong Offensive.
Neither version involves the other’s materials, so if your objective reads Sturdy Lumber, the crypt cellar in Shadowvale is the only place you need to be.
