Quick answer: Alliance starts “Dragonkin Menace” in the Burning Steppes, and Horde starts “Blood and Thunder” in Kargath, Badlands. Both chains finish by taking General Drakkisath’s blood in Upper Blackrock Spire.
Onyxia’s Lair in World of Warcraft: Forever is a level 60, 40-player raid in Dustwallow Marsh. Nobody gets in without the Drakefire Amulet, and each faction earns it through its own long attunement chain.
What you need for the Drakefire Amulet chain
The other launch raids arrive on 9 December 2026, when Onyxia’s Lair becomes available as well. Since the chain runs through several high-level dungeons, begin preparing well in advance.
- A level 60 character to enter the raid itself
- A group of friends for the elite quests
- Time for repeat trips into Blackrock Depths, Lower Blackrock Spire and Upper Blackrock Spire
Alliance Onyxia attunement steps
The Alliance route digs into the Black Dragonflight’s hold over the Blackrock orcs, then moves to Stormwind.
1Travel to the Burning Steppes and accept “Dragonkin Menace” from Helendis Riverhorn.
2Complete the six quests Helendis assigns, each titled “The True Masters”. They follow the Black Dragonflight’s role in the Blackrock clan.
3Follow the chain to Marshal Maxwell at Morgan’s Vigil in the Burning Steppes. He gives you “Marshal Windsor,” which sends you into Blackrock Depths to find Windsor or proof that he died.
4Take “Abandoned Hope” from Windsor and report back to Marshal Maxwell.
5Kill enemies in Blackrock Depths until A Crumpled Up Note drops, which starts “A Crumpled Up Note”. Bring the note to Marshal Windsor in his cell.
6For “A Shred of Hope”, retrieve the information Windsor lost from Golem Lord Argelmach and General Angerforge inside Blackrock Depths.
7Break Windsor out of Blackrock Depths in “Jail Break!” Then return to Marshal Maxwell at Morgan’s Vigil.
8Accept “Stormwind Rendezvous” from Marshal Maxwell and go to Squire Rowe at the Stormwind city gates. Talk to him to call Marshal Windsor.
9Bring allies and finish “The Great Masquerade” in Stormwind. If Windsor does not show up, speak with Squire Rowe at the gates again.
10Take “The Dragon’s Eye” from Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, which sends you across Azeroth to find someone who can help.
11In Upper Blackrock Spire, finish “Drakefire Amulet” by defeating General Drakkisath and collecting the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion. You receive the Drakefire Amulet as a reward; your attunement is complete once the amulet is in your bags.
Horde Onyxia attunement steps
The Horde route runs through Orgrimmar, Desolace and Dustwallow Marsh before it reaches the same final boss.
1Head to Kargath in the Badlands and accept “Blood and Thunder” from Warlord Goretooth.
2Next, take on “Warlord’s Command”, a quest that leads through Lower Blackrock Spire.
3Report to Eitrigg in Orgrimmar as Goretooth directs. Then go to Thrall for counsel.
4Return to Lower Blackrock Spire in “For the Horde!” and bring Thrall the head of Warchief Rend Blackhand.
5Hear what Thrall has learned in “What the Wind Carries”. Then look for Rexxar on the roads of Desolace to start “The Champion of the Horde”.
6Carry Rexxar’s testament to Myranda the Hag in the Western Plaguelands in “The Testament of Rexxar”.
7Accept “Oculus Illusions” from Myranda and collect Black Dragonspawn Eyes.
8In “Emberstrife”, use the Amulet of Draconic Subversion to locate the ancient drake Emberstrife in Dustwallow Marsh.
9Pass Emberstrife’s four tests, each starting with “The Test of Skulls”. He wants the skulls of Scryer, Somnus, Chronalis and Axtroz.
10Accept the Dull Drakefire Amulet from Emberstrife in “Ascension…” and take it back to Rexxar in Desolace.
11Take “Blood of the Black Dragon Champion” from Rexxar, then claim the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion from General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire. Hand it to Rexxar and he gives you the Drakefire Amulet, which completes the attunement.
Before you enter Onyxia’s Lair
Every one of the 40 raid members needs their own copy.
Onyxia fights in three phases and hits hard with fire, so stack fire resistance before the pull and expect to change position during the fight. Raids are planned to reset weekly.
Drakefire Amulet FAQ
Can you finish the attunement solo?
Both chains include elite quests and several runs through high-level dungeons, which aren’t built for one player.
