Curse of Ula’tek, the first major content drop for World of Warcraft: Midnight, is now live. It went out on August 11 in North America and rolled into Europe on August 12 after the regional weekly reset. The patch pushes the Midnight story forward, drops you on a brand new outdoor zone called The Coiled Isle, and adds a fresh instance type known as Lairs. Not everything is available on day one, though. A chunk of the endgame is gated behind Midnight Season 2.
Quick answer: Log in now to play The Coiled Isle, the new Altar of Fangs dungeon (up to Mythic 0), three new Delves, Lairs, Prey, and the housing blueprint and Pet Bed features. The Venomous Abyss raid, Mythic+, and the Great Vault arrive when Season 2 starts on Tuesday, August 18.
What you can play now vs. what waits for Season 2
The patch and the new season are split by a full week. That gap is intentional. It gives you time to explore the island, learn the new dungeon, and sort out class changes before the competitive grind starts.
| Live right now (Patch 12.1) | Arrives with Season 2 (August 18) |
|---|---|
| The Coiled Isle and its campaign | Venomous Abyss raid |
| Altar of Fangs dungeon (up to Mythic 0) | Mythic+ dungeon rotation |
| Three new Delves | Bountiful Delves and tiers past 7 |
| Lairs (flexible difficulty) | Lair difficulty scaling and higher tiers |
| Prey Season 2 activities | Great Vault gear |
| Heroic and Mythic 0 difficulty | New PvP season |
The Coiled Isle and its custom talent tree
The story pulls away from the void planes and Silvermoon City and sends you to The Coiled Isle, a fog-shrouded landmass off the east coast of Zul’Aman. It is described as the prison of a vengeful loa named Ula’tek, and the campaign has you chasing the fallout from Zul’jan’s actions alongside Zul’jarra. The zone leans hard into serpent imagery, poisonous waters, and venomous enemies.
While you are on the island, you get access to a zone-specific talent tree that you rank up as you play. The perks are a mix of player power and quality-of-life effects tuned to the environment. One example is Venomwalking, which cuts the venom damage you take while moving around the isle.
The island is built for repeatable play. Curse Surges regularly spawn rare elites at five rotating locations, the Vaults of Atal’Utek offer challenging group content with rotating public events that build to a boss fight, and Cursed Fishing gives collectors something to chase. Public events, rare enemies, and exploration rewards fill out the rest.
Lairs: the new instance type
Lairs are the headline new format in 12.1, and they are an evolution of the old world boss idea. Instead of a boss standing in the open world on a spawn timer, the encounter lives inside an instanced location with its own summoning stone outside, similar to how Delves work.
They scale in difficulty all the way up to a flexible Mythic setting for 15 to 25 players. That lets you match the fight to your group size and progression goals. Full difficulty scaling for Lairs, along with the higher tiers, switches on with Season 2.
Altar of Fangs and the Season 2 Mythic+ rotation
Altar of Fangs is the new three-boss dungeon, and it is playable up to Mythic 0 the moment the patch is live. That first week is a low-pressure window to learn the boss mechanics, layout, dangerous trash, interrupt priorities, and routes before timed keys matter.
Once Season 2 begins, Altar of Fangs joins the Mythic+ pool. The full rotation mixes Midnight dungeons with returning instances.
- Altar of Fangs (new)
- Murder Row
- Den of Nalorakk
- The Blinding Vale
- Voidscar Arena
- Kings’ Rest
- Ruby Life Pools
- Temple of Sethraliss
Venomous Abyss raid and Season 2 endgame
The big raid, Venomous Abyss, opens with the start of Season 2 on August 18. It features eight boss encounters and ends with a confrontation against Ula’tek herself. The current lineup runs from Nek’zali the Soulcoiler through Entombed Sentinels, Vashnik the Malignant, The Lost Explorers, Sszorak, The Twin Fangs, and The Coiled Altar before the final fight.

Delves also expand for Season 2. The patch adds three new ones now, including a Nemesis Delve.
| Delve | Type |
|---|---|
| The Ring of Glory | Standard |
| Gnarldor Isle | Standard |
| Venomfall Deeps | Nemesis Delve |
When Season 2 starts, Bountiful Delves return, keys become available, and you can push past Tier 7 to face the new Nemesis boss. Existing Midnight Delves also get new snake and venom enemy variants.
Gear, difficulty, and item level
If you want to raise your item level right away, Heroic and Mythic 0 are open. Mythic 0 drops item level 292 gear. It runs on a weekly reset for now and flips to a daily reset once Season 2 goes live. Great Vault gear, Mythic+, and the higher Delve difficulties all follow with the season.
Note: the patch also applies a game-wide tuning change. Player health and creature damage are both up 25% at max level, and health consumable values have been adjusted to match. DPS tuning generally trims burst-window cooldowns and buffs steady damage to compensate.
Prey, PvP, and Training Grounds
Prey Season 2 activities are live on the Coiled Isle now, with the full season track and its “A Slithering Threat” questline opening on August 18. Nightmare Mode returns with four new serpent-themed targets, an optional permanent “Curse of the Isle” toggle to crank up the danger, and rewards including decor, cosmetics, and mounts.
On the PvP side, a new season lands with Season 2. Training Grounds also expands. After the earlier Battlegrounds-versus-bots mode, you can now practice 3v3 Arenas against bots. To try it, open the Group Finder, go to the Player vs. Player tab, and pick Training Grounds.
Housing: blueprints and Pet Beds
Player housing picks up two standout additions. Blueprints let you save, export, and import your builds so you can swap layouts or share them with other players. You can capture the whole house inside and out, just the interior, just the exterior, or a single room.
Blueprint codes work cross-region, excluding China. When you import one, the game shows every required room and piece of decor, the budget you need, and what is missing, so you know exactly what will happen. Importing also tries to handle dyed items sensibly, using correctly dyed pieces without overwriting items you have already dyed. You get up to 50 save slots for your layouts, plus 10 more for auto-saves that trigger when you import a blueprint.
The other crowd-pleaser is the Pet Bed. It lets you bring a favorite companion into your home, and eligible pets will even wander around inside. Not every companion qualifies, but the ones that do add a lot of life to a room.
All told, Curse of Ula’tek front-loads the exploration, the new dungeon, and the systems this week, then saves the raid and the ranked grind for August 18. If you want a running start, the smart move now is to unlock the Coiled Isle, learn Altar of Fangs, clear the new Delves, and get your class settled before Season 2 flips the switch.
