The Bowhead Whale is a late-game boss in How to Fish, waiting on the fifth island. It is enormous, it hits for huge chunks of health, and its body-slam can wipe out more than half your bar in a single blow. The fight rewards clean movement and a strong ranged weapon over anything else.
Quick answer: Craft the Fish Bucket from the yellow-jacket scientist on the volcano island, attach it to your hook to summon the whale, then keep moving so it can never land on you and empty an upgraded Assault Rifle into it during each short window after it jumps or crashes.

Where to find the Bowhead Whale
The whale lives on the fifth island, the one with the volcano. You reach it by working through the island chain in order, and finishing each earlier quest hands you the coordinates for the next stop. Once you dock at the volcano, look for the NPC standing in the yellow hazmat jacket.
He will not simply hand over the boss bait. First he wants proof you can fish the local waters, which is what unlocks the Fish Bucket.

Gear to bring before the fight
Do not walk into this with a weak setup. The whale has a large health pool and only opens up for a few seconds at a time, so raw damage per window matters. Buy the Assault Rifle from the volcano island shop and get at least a couple of upgrades into it, including upgraded ammo. Stock as many healing items as you can carry, since a single mistimed dodge can end the run.
| Prep item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Scientific Lure | Catches the five native fish needed for the Fish Bucket |
| Fish Bucket | The bait that summons the whale when attached to your hook |
| Upgraded Assault Rifle | Best weapon for the short damage windows; add ammo upgrades |
| Healing items | One body-slam removes over half your HP, so keep a stock ready |
How to defeat the Bowhead Whale
The whale has one main attack. It leaps into the air and crashes down where you are standing. Everything about beating it comes down to reading that jump and never being under the shadow when it lands.

Note: Keep an eye on the white bar beneath the boss health pool. If it runs out the boss escapes and you have to start the encounter over, so keep dealing damage in every window rather than playing too passively.
The Mutated Bowhead Whale at the volcano
Beating the normal whale is not the end. Pick up the defeated whale and store it, then use the wooden planks to climb to the top of the volcano. Equip the whale carcass and throw it into the lava. This triggers the final boss, the Mutated Bowhead Whale.
The mutated version is bigger and far more dangerous. It can kill you in a couple of hits and drips lava from its body, which can end the run instantly on contact. Before this stage, load up on healing items and use the same core plan as before, sprinting well clear the instant it flies into the air.
One important limit applies here. Do not try to use the boat to drag the boss far from the volcano. Pulling it too far outside the encounter area despawns it and resets your progress. Make space to read its attacks, but stay inside the volcano arena.
How you know it worked
Once the Mutated Bowhead Whale falls, take its fin and bring it back to the hazmat-suit NPC. He hands over a key for the military boat, which sails you to the mainland and rolls the endgame credits. You can keep playing on the same save afterward, holding on to every weapon and upgrade to finish your fish collection and chase new skins from the roulette.
