How to Fish: How to Get the Empty Beer Can Lure

Turn a $12 store beer into the special lure that summons the Spider Crab boss at the Lighthouse.

Turn a $12 store beer into the special lure that summons the Spider Crab boss at the Lighthouse.

The empty beer can is the only lure that summons the Spider Crab, the first boss you fight at the Lighthouse in How to Fish. You cannot buy the empty version directly. Instead, you buy a full beer can from the shop and hand it to the Lighthouse Keeper, who drains it and gives the can back to you ready to equip.

Quick answer: Buy a Beer Can from the shop for $12, do not open it, then give it to the Lighthouse Keeper near the entrance door. He empties it and returns an empty beer can you can equip as a lure.

What you need before you start

Getting the can itself is cheap, but the boss it summons is not. Plan to carry around $60 so you can grab the can and the weapon that actually kills the Spider Crab in one trip. Earn that money by catching and selling the smaller crabs and shrimp near the Lighthouse to the Keeper.

Get the empty beer can from the Lighthouse Keeper

Head to the shop at the Lighthouse entrance door and buy one Beer Can for $12. A single can is enough, so do not stock up on extras.

Leave the Beer Can alone in your inventory. Do not select or use it yet, since an opened can will not become the lure you need.
Walk back to the Lighthouse Keeper standing near the entrance door and give him the full can. You do this by throwing or feeding the Beer Can to him.
The Keeper drinks it and hands the empty beer can back to you. Equip the empty can on your fishing rod so it acts as the lure for the Spider Crab.

You know it worked when the empty beer can appears in your inventory as a usable lure. If you still only have a full Beer Can, you opened it too early and will need to buy another one.

Prepare before you cast the empty can

Casting with the empty beer can equipped is guaranteed to hook the Spider Crab, so do not throw your line until you are ready to fight. Your fists and Brass Knuckles do almost nothing against this boss, and going in unarmed usually ends with you dead and your money lost.

Before you reel it in, buy the Knife from the Lighthouse door for $45. Sharpening it at the anvil beside the Lighthouse raises its damage and makes the fight shorter. It also helps to have full health and a spare fish in your inventory to eat mid-fight.

During the fight, keep your distance and wait for the crab to charge. When it misses and gets stunned, run in, land a couple of quick hits with the knife, then back off. Watch the white bar under its health, because if that bar runs out the boss escapes and you have to start over.

Finish the quest after the fight

Once the Spider Crab dies, pick up its remains and bring them to the Lighthouse Keeper. Handing over the carcass completes the opening quest and rewards you with the keys to his boat, which lets you sail away from the Lighthouse to the next island.

If you die to the crab, you keep your rod and knife, though you may need to pick them up off the ground. You will have to earn another $12 for a fresh Beer Can before you can summon the boss again.
