Stygian Onslaught Dire: How to Clear Battle of the Starburst in 7.0

The three bosses, the element each one is weak to, and the team structures that break their shields fast enough to finish under the timer.

Dire is the sixth and hidden difficulty of Stygian Onslaught, the hardest permanent endgame mode in Genshin Impact. In version 7.0 it puts three bosses back to back — the Chimeric Winged Lion, the Veteran Wind Operative, and Knuckle Duckle — each with a shield mechanic you must break using a specific element or reaction before you can deal real damage. Every fight has a two-minute limit, so the clear is decided by how quickly you strip the shield, not by raw damage alone.

Quick answer: Bring a Stellar-Conduct or Cryo team for the Chimeric Winged Lion, a shield or dodge unit plus a Bond of Life carry for the Veteran Wind Operative, and an Electro or Lunar-Charged team for Knuckle Duckle. Break each boss’s ward first, then burst inside the weakened window.

Dire difficulty rules and time limits

Stygian Onslaught runs across six difficulty tiers. The first three give you a generous ten minutes per boss, but the top three tighten the window to two minutes each. Dire sits at the very top, with the highest boss HP pools in the mode.

DifficultyLevelTime limit per boss
Easy110 minutes
Normal210 minutes
Hard310 minutes
Menacing42 minutes
Fearless52 minutes
Dire62 minutes

The HP jump from Fearless to Dire is steep. The Chimeric Winged Lion carries 10.75 million HP on Fearless and 23.35 million on Dire. The Veteran Wind Operative moves from 8 million to 17.5 million, and Knuckle Duckle from 13.1 million to 25.9 million. Because damage taken by these bosses is tied to how much you deal while their shields are up, the priority is always the same. Break the shield, then unload during the vulnerable phase.

Note: A set of Exalted Ones receives ATK, DEF, and HP buffs inside the mode. That roster refreshes daily based on what other players use to clear Dire, and it only strengthens characters you already own.

Chimeric Winged Lion: break the Electro Shield

This is a new boss in 7.0 and it heavily favors Stellar teams. A few seconds into the fight it grants itself a large Electro Shield worth 40 Gauge Units. Each Elemental Reaction chips a portion of that shield, and a Stellar Reaction removes 16 Units in one hit, which is why Stellar-Conduct teams clear it fastest.

Once the shield breaks, the Lion takes damage matching what it absorbed, then drops its Cryo and Anemo resistance for a short window. That resistance shred, combined with the natural Stellar advantage, is the reason Cryo and Anemo carries perform so well here.

Watch the orb phase. After it gets back up, the boss flies and attacks, then spawns Anemo Orbs. If those orbs touch Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo, they absorb it and explode. Clearing all orbs, or landing Stellar Glimmer damage, sends the boss into another down phase where you repeat the burst.

Veteran Wind Operative: shield or dodge the Hunt Down

The Fatui Operative returns with an Anemo coat. Mechanically it plays like the Cryo Operative from 6.1, but with a larger HP pool and Anemo damage instead of Cryo. The Anemo swap is actually helpful, because teams without Bennett avoid having a Cryo aura slapped on them, which otherwise slows rotations.

Right after the fight starts, she performs Hunt Down. She spends part of her HP, gains a large White Damage Shield, and launches an attack. That shield blocks the damage bonus from Vaporize and Melt but otherwise acts as a second health bar. If Hunt Down connects with an unshielded character, she heals and stamps a heavy damage-over-time debuff on your active unit.

While her shield is active she also applies a very large Bond of Life to your whole team, and that Bond cannot be healed off. So you either dodge Hunt Down cleanly or run your own shield to eat the hit. Break her shield and she takes damage equal to what she absorbed. Fast breaks let her raise the shield around three times per fight.

Best teams for the Veteran Wind Operative

Because the Operative feeds your team Bond of Life, carries that convert it into damage gain the most. Arlecchino is the standout, since his largest hit lands while he holds the full Bond of Life. Clorinde works the same way.

Knuckle Duckle: kill the Ducklings to drop the Ward

Knuckle Duckle comes back unchanged, and it strongly favors Lunar-Charged teams. You can brute-force it without Lunar-Charged if your damage is high enough, but that usually means heavy vertical investment.

Soon after the fight opens, it gives itself a White Damage Shield and extremely high resistance. That resistance is too high to break by hitting the shield directly. Instead it spawns small Stomping Devices, the Ducklings, and each Duckling you kill cuts the boss’s Ward by a chunk.

The Ducklings also track instances of Electro-Charged and Lunar-Charged damage. Enough hits from those reactions auto-dismantle them, and those damage types are more effective against them in general. Once every Duckling is dead, the Ward breaks, the boss loses its extra resistance, and its Electro resistance drops further. It stays exposed for a while before putting the shield back up.

How a full Dire clear plays out

A clean Dire run separates each boss into a break phase and a burst phase, and the total time adds up across all three. A sample high-investment clear finished the whole Battle of the Starburst lineup in 205 seconds, split as follows.

BossClear timeKey mechanic
Knuckle Duckle88 secondsKill Ducklings to drop the Ward
Chimeric Winged Lion78 secondsBreak the 40-Unit Electro Shield
Veteran Wind Operative39 secondsBreak the White Damage Shield

Notice how the times shrink once the strategy is dialed in. The Operative fell in 39 seconds because a fast shield break returns damage equal to what she absorbs, turning her own mechanic against her. The same logic applies to the other two fights. Speed on the break phase is what wins Dire.

You know a fight is over when the Battle Complete banner appears with the elapsed time, and the full run ends on the Challenge Completed screen that counts down and closes on its own. Once all three bosses are down inside their timers, the Dire clear registers.

The through-line across all three bosses is the same. Match the element or reaction each one is weak to, remove the shield or ward first, then commit your burst during the short vulnerable window. Get that rhythm right and the two-minute timers stop being the problem, even at Dire’s inflated HP pools.
