The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Defeat Ambrus, the Right Fist of the Knyaz

Ring the bell at midnight, trick Ambrus into drinking poisoned blood, and close out The Gilded Gauntlet.

Ring the bell at midnight, trick Ambrus into drinking poisoned blood, and close out The Gilded Gauntlet.

Ambrus is one of the three court bosses Coen has to remove in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and his duel is the rare fight where the hardest work happens before swords are drawn. The encounter sits inside the quest The Gilded Gauntlet, and the conversation that precedes it decides whether you face a vampire at full strength or one already sick with poisoned blood.

Quick answer: Ring the bell at midnight to summon Ambrus, then pick the dialogue option “Letting a peasant drink first? What kind of a boyar are you?” so he bites the poisoned peasant. Survive the sword duel with blocks and dodges, then choose [kill Ambrus] to finish him.

Requirements before the duel with Ambrus

The fight only becomes available through The Gilded Gauntlet, Ambrus’s court activity. Once the quest reaches the objective “Show up for the duel with Ambrus,” your journal adds two lines: ring the bell at night to summon him, and an optional objective to show up for the duel on time.

Timing is the one hard gate. The bell only works at night, and the encounter is built around midnight, so rest or advance time at a shrine until the clock reads Midnight before you head to the duel site. Turning up late does not block the fight, but it forfeits the optional punctuality objective.

How to summon Ambrus with the bell

Travel to the duel location at night with the quest tracked. The interaction prompt on the bell reads “Ring the Bell,” and it will not fire during the day.
Interact and select [ring the bell] (2) +2 rather than [leave]. Leaving simply walks you out of the scene and you will have to return on another night.
Let the cutscene play out. Ambrus arrives in his polished armour and opens the conversation, which is where the poisoning setup begins.

Dialogue choices that poison Ambrus before the fight

The conversation is a needling contest. Coen keeps provoking Ambrus about his humble past and his borrowed nobility until the vampire’s pride does the rest. The final line is the one that matters, because it dares him to drink from a peasant whose blood has already been poisoned.

OrderChoice to pick
1[ring the bell] (2) +2
2Hence the shiny armour?
3I was bored.
4Skender was one of us – you’re not.
5Enough of this bullshit.
6Letting a peasant drink first? What kind of a boyar are you?

Take the peasant line and Ambrus sinks his teeth into the villager to prove a point. The poison hits him immediately, and he goes into the duel weakened. Skip it and you fight him at full strength, which is the single most common reason this encounter turns into a grind.

Note: the other replies in the exchange, including Cut the crap., Some difference. and You’re a pawn, Ambrus., are flavour. They change the tone of the scene, not the outcome, as long as you reach the peasant option.

Beating Ambrus, the Right Fist of the Knyaz

When the boss bar appears it reads “Ambrus, the Right Fist of the Knyaz.” This is a straight sword duel rather than a vampiric brawl, so treat it like a fencing match. He opens with fast, telegraphed swings and closes distance quickly.

Stay on the defensive and punish. Dodge through his committed swings, answer with two or three strikes, then reset spacing instead of chasing a fourth hit. Because the poison is already draining him, you do not need a long combo to win the exchange, you just need to avoid trading blows with a vampire who hits harder than you do.

A QUEST UPDATED prompt appearing during the fight is your confirmation that the encounter is progressing as intended and not a scripted retreat.

Kill Ambrus or drain his blood

Once his health is gone, Ambrus is downed and the game hands you a final choice. [kill Ambrus] executes him outright. [drain Ambrus's blood] has Coen feed instead, leaning into the hunger the game keeps dangling in front of you.

Pick [kill Ambrus] for the clean execution. Either way, the objective closes out and the quest updates, which is how you know The Gilded Gauntlet is finished rather than paused.

Why the Ambrus kill matters for the ending

Ambrus is one of three court bosses, alongside Bakir and Xanthe, and all three have to fall before the endgame opens up. Clearing them pushes Coen to maximum Infamy in Vale Sangora, which triggers the Infamy Edicts cutscene the following day and Brencis’s invitation to parley.

The dialogue you choose inside The Gilded Gauntlet does not lock you out of any ending. What does matter is the clock. You have 30 in-game days to rescue Coen’s family, so getting through the court bosses efficiently leaves room for Lacra’s and Crake’s questlines later.

If Ambrus refuses to appear at all, the cause is almost always the time of day rather than a bug. Return to the bell after nightfall, ring it, and the duel starts on schedule.
