Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 Drops Transformation Timers After Fan Backlash

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 no longer puts a countdown on your transformations. The short time limits that appeared in earlier demos have been cut, and forms like Super Saiyan are once again controlled by ki rather than a ticking clock.

Quick answer: Transformation timers are gone. In the updated build shown at Gamescom, transformations run on ki again, so you can stay transformed as long as you keep your ki topped up by charging.

Transformation timers removed in the latest build

Developer Dimps has taken the timer system out entirely. An updated press demo confirmed that transformations are back to being tied to ki, matching how they worked in the earlier Xenoverse games. That means a form stays active while you have the ki to sustain it, and charging keeps it going.

It is not yet clear whether the ki requirement makes transformations last longer overall. What matters is that the duration is now in your hands instead of expiring on a fixed countdown.

Why the change happened

The original timer setup drew heavy criticism. Early gameplay showed that activating Super Saiyan required filling a meter first, and once triggered the form lasted only about a minute. Super Saiyan 3 came with an even tighter limit, and some players struggled to make the form usable in a fight at all.

Fans pushed back hard across community discussions, arguing that Xenoverse 2 already handled this well by letting forms stay up through ki management rather than a strict countdown. The reversal drops the timer approach and returns to that familiar ki-based model.

Other combat systems and the new Android race

Transformations are just one part of a wider combat rework. Ki now behaves more like a stamina gauge that refills over time, and high-powered skills run on cooldowns. Transformations are grouped under an “Awakening” system that you build toward during a fight before switching into a form such as Super Saiyan or a Kaioken boost.

Two more tools sit alongside Awakenings. Soul Assist lets you call on a legendary fighter like Piccolo or Krillin to use their signature moves, while Soul Change lets you take on that fighter directly and use their strength yourself. Characters such as Trunks and Vegeta also get faster cooldowns on their skills.

The lineup of playable races is expanding too. Androids join Saiyan, Human, and Majin as a new race, each with its own unique transformation.

Platforms and release window

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is set in AGE 1000, roughly 300 years after the end of the main Dragon Ball sagas. It is developed by Dimps and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, with a release planned for 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

With the countdown mechanic gone, transformations line up with what long-time players expect from the series. If you keep charging and hold your ki, you can stay in a form for the length of a fight, exactly as the previous games allowed.
