Clearing a million pieces of hay to reach the needle is the intended way to play Find the Needle!, and it is also the slowest way to build a diamond balance. The currency you actually need for buffs and unlocks comes far quicker from a single rare pickup buried in the pile: Void Hay.
Quick answer: Create a solo party, spawn into the round, and immediately walk a full lap around the outside of the hay pile scanning for purple Void Hay. Collect it for +250 diamonds, then leave and create a new room to reset the pile. Repeat.
Void Hay diamond payout vs. finishing a round
The math is what makes this worth doing. A completed round — clearing enough hay to reach the needle — pays 100 diamonds. A single piece of Void Hay pays 250 and takes seconds to pick up once you spot it.
| Action | Diamonds |
|---|---|
| Collect one Void Hay | +250 |
| Find the needle (finish the round) | +100 |
| Playtime reward tick | +3 |
Two pieces of Void Hay can occasionally spawn in the same room, so a lucky lap can be worth 500 diamonds before you have touched the pile properly.

Add to Google Preferences →What Void Hay looks like in the Hay Index
Void Hay is purple and stands out clearly against the yellow pile, which is the entire reason this method works — you are looking for a color, not digging blind. The Hay Index lists it as a Mythic with a 0.05% chance, and it is the highest-paying special hay you will realistically run into.
| Hay type | Rarity | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Void Hay | Mythic | 0.05% |
| Crystal Hay | Epic | 0.03% |
| Golden Hay | Legendary | 0.01% |
How to farm Void Hay in solo rooms

Note: burrowing into the hay does not improve your odds, and it costs time. Keep to the outer surface, keep the camera wide, and treat each room as a two-minute scan rather than an attempt at the needle.

Finding the needle by accident
It happens. While circling and pulling at surface hay you can uncover the needle itself, which triggers the NEEDLE FOUND! banner and a +100 diamonds payout. It is a bonus, not the goal — take it and start the next room.

Where to spend the diamonds you farm
Diamonds go into the GAME BUFFS menu, which sells Movement Speed and Coin Earnings upgrades. Movement Speed is the one that feeds directly back into this loop, since faster laps mean more rooms checked per hour. Beyond the buffs list, diamonds also cover utilities like REVEAL NEEDLE and INFINITE BAG.

Why the loop stalls
- You are committing to full clears. Finishing the pile takes far longer than a reset and pays less than one Void Hay.
- You are searching from too close in. A tight camera hides purple flakes on the far side of the pile.
- You stayed in a room that showed nothing. The roll is fixed for that pile; only leaving and creating a new room changes it.
- You sank into the hay. Use the U “Unstuck” button rather than fighting the geometry.
Run it as a rhythm rather than a grind: enter, lap, decide, leave. At two to three minutes per successful pull, the diamond counter climbs faster than it ever will from completing rounds, and the Movement Speed buff you buy along the way shaves time off every lap after it.
