How to Beat the Dokyo Boss Fight in Onimusha: Way of the Sword

The exact counters for Dokyo's projectile strings, airborne poses, exploding Genma, and the meteor finale.

The exact counters for Dokyo’s projectile strings, airborne poses, exploding Genma, and the meteor finale.

Dokyo — The Transgressor is one of the last fights in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, waiting at the end of the Arashiyama chapter under the mission banner “In the Light of an Icy Moon.” She is not a slugfest boss like Benkei or Sasaki Ganryu Altered. She spends most of the fight at range, throwing magic at you, and the whole encounter is built around punishing that.

Quick answer: When Dokyo starts firing a stream of ranged attacks, swing just before one of the projectiles connects. A clean Issen there cancels her entire attack string, opens her up for melee, and is the single fastest way to drain her health bar.

What the Dokyo fight actually is

The arena is a swampy, open space, and the objective on screen is simply “Defeat Dokyo.” She is the mastermind behind the chimeras that have been tearing through Kyoto, so by the time you reach her you have already fought most of her work. She hits less hard than the late-game heavyweights, but she is full of gimmicks, and if you try to fight her like a swordsman she will just keep backing off and shooting you.

Bring whatever Oni Armaments you have charged. The weapon wheel is worth opening early to see what is available — Wind-Whipper, Earth-Shakers, Still Water, and Firebird Flute all work here, and Wind-Whipper’s swirling attack is an easy way to convert a knockdown into damage. Keep an eye on your restorative timers too; an expired buff in the middle of her projectile spam is how good attempts fall apart.

Dokyo’s attacks and the correct answer to each

Almost everything she does falls into one of six buckets. Learn which bucket you are looking at and the fight stops being chaotic.

Dokyo’s moveWhat to do
Streams of red energy waves and linesIssen just before one hits to cancel the whole string
Rolling projectiles across the groundDodge to the side; don’t gamble on a counter
Purple homing orbs, fired in setsKeep moving and dodge each one, then close the gap
Floating or airborne poseDraw the bow and shoot her down
Summoned exploding GenmaBait them into detonating next to her
Falling meteors (final stretch)Movement only — keep running through the impact zones

The Issen cancel that breaks her ranged pressure

This is the core of the fight. Dokyo commits to long chains of ranged magic, and each projectile in that chain is counterable. Instead of rolling away and waiting for the barrage to end, stand your ground and swing at the moment a projectile is about to touch you. The Issen wipes out the rest of the string and forces her into a different move, which is usually one you can walk straight into.

The timing is the same razor-thin window Issen always uses, so react to the impact, not the wind-up. If you are not confident yet, dodge the first couple of volleys and watch how long a projectile takes to reach you from her hands. Once that distance is in your head, you can cancel almost every ranged sequence she has and keep her on the defensive.

When you do get close, be efficient. Land your combo, take the stamina damage, and be ready to break off — she does not stand still for long, and overcommitting is how you eat a counter you could have countered yourself.

Shoot Dokyo out of the air with the Oni Bow

Whenever Dokyo lifts off the ground, switch to the bow. A hit while she is airborne triggers a large explosion and drops her, which hands you a free melee window that you would otherwise have to fight for. It works more than once, so treat every float as a prompt to aim rather than a reason to back away.

Tip: line the shot up while she is still rising. Waiting until she is fully settled in the air gives her time to start the next projectile pattern, and then you are aiming and dodging at the same time.

Turn her exploding Genma against her

At points in the fight Dokyo summons Genma that blow up. Do not clear them out at a distance. Pull them toward her, then step away and let them detonate around her — the explosions damage Dokyo, so a summon she meant as pressure becomes a chunk off her health bar. Positioning is all this asks for: get her between you and the pack, then move.

Save Oni Awakening for the back half

Awakened Oni form is your damage spike here. Issen becomes far easier to land while transformed, so the smart play is to spend the transformation landing Issen strikes rather than immediately firing off the finisher. Hold the finisher until the Awakening meter is nearly empty, and you get both the sustained damage and the big hit.

Feed the meter throughout the fight by parrying and by taking purple souls when you break her, which top up Oni Power and Awakening together. Blue souls keep your Armaments usable, so if Wind-Whipper or Firebird Flute is a big part of your damage, prioritize those.

The enraged state and the meteor finish

Once her health drops far enough, Dokyo wreathes herself in red energy and gets noticeably more aggressive. Her patterns do not change into something unrecognizable — they just come out faster and with less recovery. Keep using the same Issen cancel; a faster string is still a string.

The last phase adds giant falling meteors. There is no counter for these. Watch the impact markers, keep moving through the arena, and only turn back toward Dokyo once the barrage stops. Standing still to look for a parry prompt that never comes is the most common way to die this late in the fight.

How you know the fight is over

Emptying her health bar triggers a cutscene rather than another phase. Dokyo goes down, admits that Kaguya was her real name before she dissolves, and a huge red smiling moon rises over the arena — a fairly direct hint that her defeat was not the end of the plan. Once that plays out, the “Defeat Dokyo” objective clears and the story moves on.

Why attempts fail

  • Swinging at the start of her projectile animation instead of at the moment of contact, which whiffs the cancel and eats the rest of the string.
  • Killing the exploding Genma at range instead of walking them into her.
  • Ignoring her airborne pose and letting a free bow knockdown pass by.
  • Taking heavy damage early — bosses shift into their enhanced state sooner the more you get hit, so a sloppy opening makes the rest harder.
  • Burning every Hozuki charge before the meteor phase, leaving nothing for the last stretch.

If she still gives you trouble, the Boss Rematch option in the Practice Ground lets you run the encounter again as many times as you want. Dokyo is a pattern fight more than a damage race, and a few repeats of that one Issen cancel is usually all it takes for the whole thing to click.
