Onimusha: Way of the Sword – Every Sword Skin and How to Unlock It

All 12 katana skins for Musashi, from the six tied to Lion Dogs to the pre-order and Deluxe Edition extras.

All 12 katana skins for Musashi, from the six tied to Lion Dogs to the pre-order and Deluxe Edition extras.

Musashi’s katana in Onimusha: Way of the Sword can wear a dozen different looks, and none of them touch his damage, speed, or any combat stat. Sword skins are strictly cosmetic. Six of them come from rescuing collectibles called Lion Dogs, and the rest are tied to pre-order and Deluxe Edition purchases.

Quick answer: Collect Lion Dogs to earn one sword skin for every six you rescue (six skins across all 36), then equip any owned skin at a Spirit Mirror through the “Change Appearance” option. The remaining six skins only come from pre-ordering or owning the Deluxe or Premium Deluxe editions.

Every sword skin and how to unlock it

There are 12 sword skins in total. The first six unlock automatically as your Lion Dog count climbs, and the last six are edition or pre-order rewards claimed at a Spirit Mirror.

Bamboo & PandaDeluxe or Premium Deluxe editionIt may be made from bamboo, but Musashi is fond of wielding it. The panda is a nice touch.

Rescuing Lion Dogs for the six free skins

Lion Dogs are small spirit companions hidden across the game’s regions. Every six you rescue hands you a new sword skin, and gathering all 36 completes the non-paid set with Kikoku. You cannot pick which skin you get first; they arrive in order as your count rises.

Reach and complete the quest “What Lurks in the Shadows,” which is Chapter 11. No Lion Dogs are available before this point, so early-game runs cannot unlock any of these skins.
Speak with Lady Murasaki. She explains what the Lion Dogs are and marks a set of their locations on your map with paw prints.
Keep progressing the main story. Additional Lion Dog markers appear as you clear specific quests, since these missions unlock in a fixed order.
Open the Curious Cases menu at any time to check how many Lion Dogs you have found and where the remaining ones are hiding.

The Lion Dogs are spread across five regions and become reachable as you hit certain quests. Here is where each batch opens up.

QuestLion DogsRegions
What Lurks in the Shadows12Eastern Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Nijo-jo Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace
The Roots of All Evil5Eastern Kyoto
Okuni’s Kabuki Dance5Eastern Kyoto
The Demon on the Mount6Mount Oe
In the Light of an Icy Moon8Eastern Kyoto, Arashiyama

Because the quests gate the locations in sequence, the fastest path is to push through the campaign normally. By the time you approach the finale, every Lion Dog will be within reach, putting all six free skins on the table.

Pre-order and Deluxe Edition sword skins

Six skins never appear in the standard base game on their own. Sealed Curse comes with any pre-order, while The White Lion is limited to Deluxe and Premium Deluxe pre-orders. The remaining four, Bamboo & Panda, Whittled Oar, Raizan, and Enryuu, ship as part of the Deluxe Kit that comes with the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe editions. You can review edition contents on the official Onimusha: Way of the Sword products page.

These paid skins must be claimed once before you can equip them. Visit a Spirit Mirror, open the menu, and select the “Additional Content” option to add the items to your inventory. After that, they behave like any other unlocked skin.

How to equip a sword skin at the Spirit Mirror

All appearance changes route through the Spirit Mirror. The “Change Appearance” option becomes available after you complete the early mission “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu,” so if you already own a skin but the option is missing, you have not reached that point yet.

Find any Spirit Mirror on the map and interact with it to open its menu.
Select “Change Appearance” from the options.
Choose the sword slot, pick the skin you want, and confirm. The new look takes effect immediately on Musashi’s blade.

You will know it worked when the equipped skin appears on the sword in the preview and stays on the weapon once you leave the mirror. If a paid skin still does not show up after claiming it, confirm your purchase is registered on your platform and that you have progressed far enough for the Change Appearance menu to fully unlock.

Since none of these skins alter combat in any way, the choice is purely about how you want Musashi to look while cutting through Genma. Chase the Lion Dogs for the six free blades, claim your edition extras at a mirror, and swap between all twelve whenever the mood strikes.
