Xanthe’s trap is the point in the assault on Griefberg Castle where the game stops playing fair. The corridor you just cleared reappears, the red mist rolls back in, and the same spectral enemies come at you again. There is no timer to beat and no hidden switch to find. The loop is a door puzzle, and the answer is hanging on the wall next to the doorways.
Quick answer: Clear the enemies in the main room, take the door ahead and to your left, pull back the bookcase and drop through the hole. On every loop after that, clear the room again and leave through the door marked by a downward-pointing triangular banner with a tentacled eye. Three drops in total ends the trap.
When Xanthe’s trap appears in Fall Before Dusk
The trap is not part of every playthrough. It only fires during the Griefberg Castle sequence if you refused to spare Xanthe, or killed her outright before the finale began. Players who made a deal with her never see the illusion at all.
Inside the quest Fall Before Dusk, the objective flips from “Find the throne room” to “Escape Xanthe’s trap” the moment the illusion takes hold. From there Coen and Crake are stuck in a twisted copy of the same hallway, and Crake’s grumbling about being “back where we started” is the game confirming you looped rather than failed.

Add to Google Preferences →The banner rule that marks the correct door
Every doorway in the looping area has cloth hanging beside it, and only one design leads onward. Look for a banner that is triangular, points downward, and carries a tentacled eye emblem. If a door does not have that exact banner next to it, it feeds you straight back into the loop.
The rule is signposted earlier in the castle. A note you can read before reaching the dungeon states that following the banners is the only way in. In the middle of a fight the symbol is easy to misread, so check both details before committing: the shape must point down, and the eye must be on it.
How to escape Xanthe’s trap

How to tell the trap is over
The escape is unmistakable. Instead of red mist and a mirrored hallway, you land in a plain dark stone corridor, the “TIME HAS PASSED” notice appears, and the quest objective updates so you can carry on through Griefberg Castle.
“All right, I think we’re out.” — Coen
If you land somewhere that still has red mist and fresh enemies, you have not escaped. You are simply on the next loop, and the routine starts over.
Why the loop keeps resetting
| Common mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Trying every door after the first drop | Only the bannered door advances the second and third loops |
| Hunting for another bookcase | The bookcase exists once, for the first descent only |
| Using a door with the wrong banner | Match the full symbol: downward triangle plus tentacled eye |
| Trying to skip the main-room fights | Clear each group; the encounters gate the exit |
| Assuming a reset means a wrong turn | Repeats are expected until the third drop |
Once you internalize the rule, the sequence is short: left door and bookcase the first time, tentacled-eye banner and a hole every time after that. Griefberg Castle opens back up on the other side, and Xanthe’s parting gift stops costing you anything more than a few minutes of dusk.
