The Blood of Dawnwalker: What Happens When Svartrau City Gates Are Shut

The final Infamy edict locks down Vale Sangora's only city, turns pilgrims away at the gate, and forces you over the walls at night.

The final Infamy edict locks down Vale Sangora’s only city, turns pilgrims away at the gate, and forces you over the walls at night.

Svartrau City is the one true city in Vale Sangora, and the only place with the full spread of specialised merchants. That makes the moment its gates slam shut one of the most disruptive things Brencis can do to Coen, and the world reacts to it in small, specific ways — including two pilgrims left arguing on the wrong side of the wall.

Quick answer: The gates close because Infamy reached Level 9, activating the edict On Svartrau Defences. The city is not sealed off — reach it at night and use vampiric traversal to climb the walls, or fast travel from the world map to a waypoint you already discovered inside.

Why the Svartrau City gate is shut: Infamy Level 9

Infamy is not a wanted meter that cools off on its own. It measures how much damage Coen has done to Brencis’ Court, and each new level lets Brencis issue another edict that permanently changes how the valley behaves. There are nine in total, and the ninth is the city lockdown.

Infamy climbs through Court Activities, clearing soldier camps, quest choices that openly defy the Court, and crimes. Defeating any of Brencis’ three major vassals raises it by a full level on its own, so the lockdown is closely tied to normal progress rather than reckless play.

An edict does not take effect the second your Infamy ticks up. It comes into force after an in-game day passes, and the new decree is then announced in Svartrau. Edicts also stack, so the closed gates arrive on top of everything already in place.

8On Army ReformAll soldiers become stronger

How to confirm the lockdown is live

The clearest confirmation is the gate itself. Walk up to it and you will find it locked, with a guard posted on the inside, refusing to open up. Approaching from the Svartrau Outskirts side gives you the whole picture at once.

Ambient dialogue is the second tell. Two pilgrims stand outside the closed gate arguing about being turned away, complaining that they travelled all day to see the city’s cathedral and were denied entry anyway. Their conversation exists purely to signal that the edict is in force.

Try to talk to them and you get nothing. The female pilgrim shuts Coen down with “I’ve got no time for chit-chat.” before returning to the gate. That refusal is scripted behaviour for the encounter, not a bug or a missed dialogue check, so there is no way to open a conversation with them.

Note: the pilgrims are a flavour encounter tied to the closed gate. There is no reward, quest, or entry route attached to them.

How to get into Svartrau City with the gates closed

The lockdown restricts normal entry and exit, but it does not make the city inaccessible. Two routes remain reliable.

Wait for nightfall so Coen shifts into his vampiric form. His night-only traversal skills are what make the walls climbable, and none of the daytime options will get you past a sealed gate.
Use vampiric movement abilities such as Shadowstep, Clawride, and Planeshift to scale the city walls and drop into the streets. Rooftop movement is the intended workaround here, the same way Planeshift lets Coen climb the cathedral exterior.
If you already discovered waypoints inside the city on an earlier visit, open the world map and fast travel straight in instead. Shrines such as Svartrau North West are worth unlocking before your Infamy climbs for exactly this reason.

You know it worked when you are standing in the streets and can open shops and quest interactions normally. Checkpoints and patrols from earlier edicts are still active around the city, so expect resistance on the approach rather than at the wall itself.

What still works inside the city during the lockdown

Nothing inside Svartrau is switched off by the edict. The blacksmith, Henrik the bookseller, the apothecary, Rud Junior’s armoury, the general merchants in the market square, and the weaponsmith’s workshop all continue trading — you simply pay the inflated prices set by the earlier edicts On Prices and Tolls and On Civil Unrest.

The cathedral the pilgrims never reached also stays open to Coen. Father Florin still holds his ceremonies inside, and the Treasury quest In the Name of the Father remains reachable through the back rooms, which matters if you are heading for the A Lone Wolf’s Hunt route into Greifberg Castle.

City quests behave the same way. Objectives that ask you to investigate an alley with Focus Mode, confront Blood Guard recruiters, or work through Bakir’s Pillories all trigger as normal once you are inside the walls.

What to do before Infamy Level 9 activates

Because an edict only lands after an in-game day has passed, crossing into a new Infamy rank hands you a short preparation window. Spend it on the things the lockdown makes awkward rather than impossible.

  • Unlock the Svartrau waypoints you want, so fast travel stays an option after the gates close.
  • Finish shopping runs and any errands that depend on specific city merchants.
  • Learn a nighttime wall route you are comfortable repeating.
  • Make sure your gear can handle the stronger soldiers introduced at Level 8, since those enemies now guard the routes in.

There is one more consequence worth knowing about. Once Infamy is maxed out and the gates are shut indefinitely, Brencis eventually issues Edict: Invitation to Parley, opening the meeting at Shrike’s Crag after sunset that leads into the A Deal with the Devil ending. In other words, the closed gate is not just an inconvenience — it is the point at which the Court decides Coen is worth negotiating with.
