Valheim 1.0: How to Get the Grappling Hook

The recipe, the four materials, and how the traversal tool works once it is on your bar.

The Grappling Hook is the traversal tool added with Valheim’s 1.0 release, and it exists mainly to get you out of the vertical dungeons scattered across the Deep North. You build it at a Forge, and every ingredient comes from the Mistlands, so you can have it ready before you ever step into the frozen biome.

Quick answer: Pick up a Hook from a Dvergr Treasure Chest inside the Mistlands Infested Mines to unlock the recipe, then craft the Grappling Hook at a Forge with 10x Yggdrasil Wood, 10x Refined Eitr, 4x Mandible, and 1x Hook.

Unlock the recipe by finding a Hook

The Grappling Hook recipe does not appear in your crafting menu until you physically pick up a Hook. These are found inside Dvergr Treasure Chests, which spawn within the Infested Mines in the Mistlands biome. Grab one and the Forge recipe becomes available immediately.

Grappling Hook materials and where they come from

Every ingredient is a Mistlands resource, so a single trip through that biome can supply the whole recipe. Here is what the Forge asks for and how each piece is gathered.

MaterialAmountHow to obtain
Yggdrasil Wood10Chop an Yggdrasil Shoot with a Black Metal Axe; it drops 20 random wood pieces.
Refined Eitr10Process Sap and Soft Tissue at the Eitr Refinery.
Mandible4Defeat Seeker Soldiers in the Mistlands.
Hook1Found inside Dvergr Treasure Chests in the Infested Mines.

If you have already crafted the Carapace Armor set, you likely have spare Mandible sitting in your chests, since both use the same Seeker Soldier drop.

Craft the Grappling Hook at the Forge

Carry a Hook to unlock the recipe, then gather the remaining Yggdrasil Wood, Refined Eitr, and Mandible from the Mistlands.
Stand at a Forge and open the crafting menu. Select the Grappling Hook and confirm the build. The tool appears in your inventory once the materials are consumed.

How to use the Grappling Hook

Equip the tool and it works like a launcher aimed at the environment. The controls are short and consistent.

  • Aim at a wall or building and left-click to fire a hook that latches onto the structure.
  • The hook pulls you toward the anchor point, then leaves you hanging.
  • Tap the jump button twice to reactivate the pull.
  • Press right-click to release the hook.

Note: There is a reload delay after each shot, so do not count on an instant second hook if you fire in a panic. The tool also does not cancel fall damage, so plan your swings before you drop.

Where the Grappling Hook matters in the Deep North

The Deep North’s open terrain is mostly flat and frozen, so the hook is not about climbing mountains. Its real value is inside the biome’s vertical dungeons, where multi-floor layouts and deep pockets can trap you with no way back up.

Two dungeons make it close to mandatory. The Winding Tunnels hold Frostcore, the material needed to build the Frost Foundry for basic Nord weapons and armor. The Gates of Mörkhalla drop Nornathread for crafting. Both are far easier to escape once you can hook your way back to a ledge, which is why building the Grappling Hook before heading north is worth the Mistlands detour.
