Skills in Grand Blue don’t turn gold because of rarity, gear, or a currency purchase. Gold is a status a skill earns on its own, and it arrives at a fixed point in that skill’s individual progression. Once it happens, the game hands you a one-time choice that permanently changes how the move performs.
Quick answer: Raise a single skill to Level 6 by using it in combat. At Level 6 the skill turns gold and a card pop-up appears offering Windup, Cooldown, or Damage — pick one to lock in the second upgrade buff.
What the gold skill upgrade actually is
Every skill you equip tracks its own level, separate from your character level. Skills gain experience purely from being cast, so a move you never press stays at Level 1 no matter how high your character climbs. Hit Level 6 on any one skill and its icon shifts to gold in the skills menu.
Open the skills menu from the on-screen buttons to see where each of your abilities currently sits. Gold icons are the ones that have already taken their second upgrade; anything still in its base color has not reached Level 6 yet.

Hovering a skill in your hotbar pulls up its details panel, which is the fastest way to confirm a specific ability’s level before you commit to farming it. Power Slash, Sword Lunge, and other weapon-locked moves all follow the same rule.

Add to Google Preferences →The three upgrade cards at Level 6
The moment a skill crosses into Level 6, a card selection screen interrupts play with three options. You take one, and that becomes the skill’s second upgrade buff.
| Card | What it affects |
|---|---|
| Windup | The startup time before the skill goes off |
| Cooldown | How long you wait before recasting |
| Damage | The raw damage the skill deals |
These buffs sit alongside the upgrade bonuses your weapon already provides, so a gold skill on a strong weapon stacks two separate sources of improvement. If you are running a slow, heavy art that keeps getting interrupted, Windup is usually the more noticeable pick. For skills you spam constantly, Cooldown wins out.
Fastest way to push a skill to Level 6

Prodigy: the trait that speeds up every skill
Prodigy is an Epic trait that grants a 15% boost to character EXP, skill EXP, pet EXP, and lifeskill EXP. Because it touches skill EXP directly, it shortens every Level 6 grind you run from that point on, not just one.
Prodigy comes from trait rolls, which is why trait rerolls are worth stockpiling before you commit to a long skill-leveling session. Free rerolls come from promo codes.
Grand Blue codes for trait rerolls
Redeem these before you start rolling for Prodigy. Codes are entered from the Customize Character screen on the main menu, using the field near the bottom right of the screen.
| Code | Reward |
|---|---|
| OmegaCode | Fruit Chest, Race Rerolls, 15 Trait Rerolls, 1,000 Celestial Coins |
| RollWithIt | 1 Fruit Chest, 5 Race Rerolls, 30 Trait Rerolls |
| PocketOfStars | 1 Fruit Chest, 10 Race Rerolls, 15 Trait Rerolls |
| GrandBlueCode | 1 Fruit Chest, 15 Trait Rerolls, 1,250 Celestial Coins |
| CelestialBlessing | Celestial Coins |
| FruitBasket | 1 Fruit Chest, 5 Race Rerolls, 10 Trait Rerolls |
| SorryForBreakingGame | 20 Trait Rerolls, 10 Race Rerolls |
| Release! | 10 Trait Rerolls, 5 Race Rerolls |
| NewYouNewCrew | 5 Trait Rerolls, 5 Race Rerolls |
HappySunday, TwitterGoalReached, 10KCCU, and WorldBossBroke no longer work. Type codes exactly as written, including capital letters and the exclamation mark on Release!, and press Redeem.
How to confirm the upgrade applied
Two things tell you it worked. First, the card pop-up appears mid-fight and you actively choose Windup, Cooldown, or Damage. Second, the skill’s icon is gold in the skills menu afterwards, and its details panel reflects the buff you selected.
If a skill still looks normal, check the HUD buttons and reopen the skills list — the change is visual and immediate, so there is nothing to claim or activate separately.

Why a skill isn’t turning gold
- The skill isn’t equipped. An ability sitting in storage gains nothing; equip it to the hotbar first.
- The skill requires a weapon type you don’t have out. Axe Spin needs an axe equipped, for example, and won’t cast without one.
- You’re spreading casts across multiple skills, so each one is creeping toward Level 6 slowly instead of one hitting it fast.
- You’re killing enemies too quickly to get repeated casts in. Move to a target with a larger health pool.
Grand Blue is still in Early Access, so skill behavior and upgrade values can shift between updates. The Level 6 threshold and the three-card choice are the parts worth planning around — everything else is faster once Prodigy is on your character and a boss is standing still long enough to absorb a few hundred casts.
