The Stone Key is a plain quest item with a single purpose, and nothing in the notes around it spells out where that purpose lies. It sits in a sealed room under the Svartrau Cathedral Treasury, and the lock it fits is a stone coffin buried deep inside the Ancient Ruin you visit during A Hero’s End.
Quick answer: Take the Treasury Key from the Cathedral Complex Belltower, unlock the Cathedral Treasury, push the bookshelf aside and drop down the ladder to grab the Stone Key from the stone in front of the cross. Then carry it into the Ancient Ruin at night during A Hero’s End and use it on the coffin past the Kobolds to claim The Hand of Fate and the Ancient Hero’s Ring.
Stone Key location: the hidden room under the Svartrau Cathedral Treasury
You cannot reach the Stone Key without the Treasury Key, and the Treasury Key never appears as a quest reward. It hangs on a ledger inside the Belltower, the northwestern room of the Cathedral Complex.
Get the Treasury Key from the Cathedral Complex Belltower

Night makes this harder rather than impossible. The complex doors lock after dark, so you have to Shadowstep onto the roof and Clawride down to land safely, and Xanthe is inside. Stumbling into the Vrakhiri starts an early boss fight, which you can dodge by sneaking in through the southeastern tower. If you do beat Xanthe, the ledger and key are still there for the taking.
Open the Treasury and pick up the Stone Key

Tip: clear out the rest of the Treasury before you leave. The shelves and chests hold Silver Valuables, which the Silver Merchant in Svartrau City buys for Denarius.

The lock is a stone coffin in the Ancient Ruin explored during A Hero’s End. Grabbing the map lying beside the Stone Key starts In the Name of the Father, the quest that leads into A Hero’s End, but finishing it is not a requirement for the ruin itself. An Ancient Key sits on a barrel next to Father Florin, and that key alone opens the entrance.
If you follow the quest chain instead, In the Name of the Father sends you to a marked house where ambushers attack. Beating them drops the key to the door, and a hidden hatch inside leads down to the underground ruins where Father Florin’s congregation gathers. Waiting at a shrine until Moonrise and then speaking to Florin starts A Hero’s End. Choosing to fight him instead does not close off the ruin or the coffin.

Why the coffin stays shut
There are only a few things that stop this from working, and all of them are easy to check before you set out.
- You entered the ruin during the day, so Shadowstep is unavailable and the floor gap blocks the route.
- You never picked up the Ancient Key from the barrel next to Father Florin, leaving the ruin entrance locked.
- You reached the coffin room without the Stone Key, which means going back to the Cathedral Treasury basement for it.
- You missed the key in the basement because Focus Mode was off. The Stone Key only stands out as a glowing object on the stone in front of the cross.
Hold on to the Stone Key the moment you find it, even if you have not reached A Hero’s End yet. It has no other use, it never expires, and the coffin it opens is the only place in the ruin where The Hand of Fate turns up.
