Golden burst as Rose absorbs Carmilla's Arcana in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Quick answer: The Occultist is the Arcana card tied to Carmilla, with Blood Spikes as its spell. Defeat Carmilla atop the Library’s Observation Tower, hit the golden orb she leaves behind, then keep E held. Afterward, take Brauner’s Paintbrush from the desk on the left landing.

Where to find The Occultist

Carmilla, who drops the Occultist, waits at the summit of the Library’s Observation Tower. Her arena is unmistakable: blood covers the floor, and an enormous red moon looms overhead.

The fight itself is covered in our Carmilla boss guide. If you still need the route up the tower, here’s how to get to Carmilla.

Once Carmilla falls, the Steam trophy “Blood for Blood” pops with the description “Defeat the Occultist”. It sits alongside the rest of the game’s achievements in the trophy list.

How to absorb the Arcana

The card doesn’t land in your inventory on its own. You have to pull it out of what’s left of Carmilla.

After the fight, watch Carmilla’s remains become a radiant golden orb on the hall floor.
Read the hint at the bottom of the screen. It says “During the Absorption phase, hold down E to absorb the power of the Arcana.”

Blood Spikes spell text

The spell tied to The Occultist is Blood Spikes. The card describes it this way:

“Summons blood spikes to impale nearby enemies, dealing low damage and causing them to bleed. Always targets the furthest enemy on the platform.”

On the card, the bleed status appears as a small icon instead of a written word.

Where to find Brauner’s Paintbrush

Brauner’s Paintbrush is in Carmilla’s hall too, so pick it up before you walk out.

Once the fight is over, make your way to the elevated landing on the hall’s left side. The desk there displays “INTERACT E”.

Press E at the desk. Rose notes that this is no ordinary paintbrush, and Carmilla replies that she uses it to paint the moon with blood.
Check the item screen that follows. It reads BRAUNER’S PAINTBRUSH with the text “A… paint brush? Owned by Brauner but “borrowed” by Carmilla.”

The paintbrush is a key item. It belongs to Brauner, so it comes back into play once you reach him.

Carmilla remains in her hall after the fight, speaking with Rose about yielding to her power before reminding her that she will still be there. In the hallway just outside, on the left, the game grants Aerial Rush. When you’re ready to continue, see where to go after Carmilla.
