Valheim Deep North: How to Get the Intricate Key for the Gates of Morkhalla

The exact moulds, metals, and stations you need to craft the key that unlocks Morkhalla.

The exact moulds, metals, and stations you need to craft the key that unlocks Morkhalla.

The Intricate Key is the consumable item that opens the chained doors inside the Gates of Morkhalla, the second dungeon type in Valheim’s Deep North biome. You cannot buy it or find it ready-made. Every key is crafted from a mould you collect underground, combined with the Deep North’s endgame metal.

Quick answer: Collect a Mould: Intricate Key in the Winding Tunnels, combine it with 5 Bloodgold Ingots at a Level 4 Black Forge to make a Cast: Intricate Key, then place that cast on a Frost Foundry and add Liquid Frost. The finished Intricate Key lets you use the locked door at the bottom of a Morkhalla tower.

What you need before crafting

The key sits at the end of a short crafting chain. Each piece comes from a different part of the Deep North, so gather these first.

RequirementWhere it comes from
Mould: Intricate KeyRubble/scrap piles, Eyeless Ones, and Elakings in the Winding Tunnels
5 Bloodgold IngotsSmelted from Petrified Tissue taken off petrified Gammeltrolls
Level 4 Black ForgeNeeded to turn the mould into a Cast: Intricate Key
Frost Foundry + Liquid FrostFinishing station that pours the key
Grappling HookRequired to reach the raised entrance of a Morkhalla tower

Find the Mould: Intricate Key in the Winding Tunnels

The mould is the starting point and it only appears in the Winding Tunnels, the maze-like dungeon hidden inside the longhouses of abandoned villages. It is not a guaranteed drop, so plan to spend time clearing the dungeon.

Enter a Winding Tunnels dungeon and destroy every pile of rubble and scrap you pass. Each pile has a chance to drop a Mould: Intricate Key.
Kill the Eyeless Ones and Elakings you meet in the tunnels. Both enemies drop the mould at a better rate than the rubble piles, so clearing them is the faster path.

Note: You need one mould per key, and progressing the biome calls for three Intricate Keys in total. Grab as many Mould: Intricate Key drops as you can while you are down there rather than backtracking later.

Make Bloodgold Ingots from Gammeltrolls

Each key costs 5 Bloodgold Ingots, the Deep North’s primary metal. Bloodgold comes from Gammeltrolls, the giant rock-covered trolls roaming the surface.

Find and kill a Gammeltroll. When it dies it petrifies into a solid stone statue and can no longer be mined with a pickaxe.
Throw Ember Charges at the petrified body to blow off chunks. Each broken piece yields Petrified Tissue.
Put the Petrified Tissue into a Blast Furnace with coal to smelt it into Bloodgold. Repeat until you have at least 5 ingots for the key.

Craft the Cast and pour the Intricate Key

With the mould and ingots in hand, the last two steps turn them into the finished key.

Go to a Level 4 Black Forge and craft the Cast: Intricate Key. This uses your Mould: Intricate Key plus 5 Bloodgold Ingots, and no other materials are required.
Approach a Frost Foundry, focus on it, and choose Place Cast to seat the Cast: Intricate Key.
Add Liquid Frost to the Frost Foundry and wait a few seconds. The station pours the cast and produces the Intricate Key. Liquid Frost is made by melting Ice in a Frigid Kiln, so keep a stock of Ice from the frozen cadavers along the shore.

Open the Gates of Morkhalla

Morkhalla towers are dark, dilapidated structures that stand taller than the surrounding pines, making them easy to spot against the snow. Their entrances sit out of reach on purpose.

Travel to the nearest Morkhalla tower and use your Grappling Hook to reach the raised entry point. Building a makeshift bridge can get you in, but you will still need the hook to navigate the dungeon inside.
Head down the stairs to the chained door at the base. Interact with it and select the prompt to use the Intricate Key. The door unlocks and the Gates of Morkhalla open.

The Intricate Key is consumed when the door opens, so one key unlocks exactly one Morkhalla. You will need to craft a new key for each additional tower you want to enter.

Why you want to get inside

Morkhalla is filled with Jotun enemies, mainly Krigen and Hexen, that drop loot used for the new armor sets. Krigen are also a source of Memorial Coal, while Hexen can even drop another Intricate Key at a low rate.

At the bottom of the dungeon you will find a Malicious Ice structure. Breaking it triggers a Jotun invasion elsewhere on the map, and repelling that invasion rewards Malicious Blood. Three Malicious Blood are needed at the Aesir Passage to summon Kall Fimbulbringer, the final boss, which is why crafting these keys matters for finishing the biome.
