Gusty is one of the wind-themed mutations in Fisch, and it multiplies a fish’s sell value by 7.5×. Unlike most high-value mutations, it is reachable without waiting for an event — two wind gear pieces carry it as a built-in chance, and the Appraiser can roll it onto a fish you already own.
Quick answer: Equip the Breeze Caster rod or the Breeze Guster harpoon gun for a 25% chance to apply Gusty on every catch, or 70% during Windy weather. Without that gear, pay the Appraiser in Moosewood to reroll a fish at roughly a 0.109% base chance per attempt.

Gusty arrived in Version 2.0 and sits in the standard mutation pool, so it is not tied to a limited window. It is appraisable, which is what makes the Moosewood reroll route viable at all.

The gap between those numbers is the whole story. The wind gear is roughly 150 times more reliable than fishing Skycrest bare-handed, so unlocking it is the only route that finishes in a reasonable session.

The Breeze Caster is not a stat monster. It runs 40% Lure Speed, 0% Luck, 0.21 Control, 10% Resilience, and a 100kg maximum weight, so it is a mutation tool rather than a general-purpose rod. Its ability text spells out the trade: the wind pushes your bobber across the water, and each catch has a 25% chance of applying Gusty.
Tip: The wind gear is also the practical way to line up a specific Gusty species. If you want a Gusty African Butterflyfish, for example, switch to Insect bait at Skycrest and keep the Breeze Caster equipped.
Reroll Gusty with the Appraiser in Moosewood
If the questline is not done yet, the Appraiser is the backup. This is a paid gamble at roughly 0.109% per roll, so treat it as a money sink and not a plan. The Appraiser’s Luck gamepass raises mutation odds through appraisal.
Note: Appraisal overwrites whatever mutation is already on the fish, so a good roll can be destroyed by chasing a better one. Size attributes such as Tiny or Giant can also be lost if the weight shifts back into the normal range, while Shiny and Sparkling are safe.
Why Gusty is not applying to your catches
A fish can only carry one mutation at a time, and higher multipliers win. If you are running other mutation sources alongside the Breeze Caster, a stronger mutation will simply take the slot instead of Gusty at 7.5×.
There is a second squeeze. When your combined mutation chance passes 100%, the game strips chance from the lowest-multiplier mutations first until the total lands back at 100%, unless one of them has a higher priority value. Stacking too many mutation effects can therefore push Gusty’s effective rate down rather than up.
The other common cause is much simpler. Gusty does not come from a passive unlock or a charm, so if the Breeze Caster or Breeze Guster is sitting in your inventory instead of being equipped, you are fishing at the 0.17% natural Skycrest rate.
Once a stack of Gusty fish is sitting in your bag, the 7.5× multiplier does the rest at the Merchant. Sell them in bulk rather than one at a time, and pair Gusty with attributes like Shiny or Big when you can, since those stack on top of the mutation instead of replacing it.
