Open the skill menu partway through Musashi’s run and you’ll hit a wall. Rows of tier 4 and tier 5 nodes sit greyed out with an Oni Stone icon attached, and no amount of Red Souls will buy them. Those tiers aren’t gated behind grinding at all. They’re gated behind a single location in Eastern Kyoto that most players walk past because the front door is sealed.
Quick answer: After completing The Roots of All Evil, travel to the Oni Portal marker in Eastern Kyoto, approach it from the south instead of the blocked bridge, use Oni Vision at the cave dead end to reveal the portal, shoot the two golden mechanisms with the Oni Bow to form a bridge, and claim the Oni Stone at the end.
Which story beat unlocks which skill tier
Skill tiers don’t unlock through spending. Each block of tiers opens when you enter the Oni Realm at a specific spot and absorb the dark mass waiting there, which hands you an Oni Stone and flags new purchases at every Spirit Mirror. If your target skill is locked, check where you are on this ladder first.
| Skill tiers | Unlock condition |
|---|---|
| Tier 1–2 | Available from the start |
| Tier 3 | A Strength in Refuge |
| Tier 4–5 | Reach the Oni Portal in Eastern Kyoto after The Roots of All Evil |
| Tier 6 and above | Okuni’s Kabuki Dance |
Oni skills carry one extra condition. Enhancements for a power or an Oni Armament only appear once you actually own the base ability or the weapon itself, so a missing Firebird Flute node usually means you haven’t picked up the Firebird Flute yet.

The tier 4 and 5 block is where several of Musashi’s tools stop being situational. It covers charged Oni Strength attacks, a faster Oni Bow charge, and the follow-ups that make Reflex Combo and Deflect worth building around.
| Skill | Tier | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Oni Bow: Charge Time | 4 | Cuts the charge on the Ultimate Charged Attack |
| Oni Strength: Chop | 4 | Charged heavy attack that often staggers |
| Oni Strength: Slice | 4 | Charged light attack that cleaves several enemies |
| Oni Agility: Fall Recovery | 4 | Instant recovery after a knockdown |
| Ultimate Reflex Combo | 4 | Extends the Reflex Combo counterattack |
| Deadly Deflection | 4 | Deflect against ranged attacks |
| Stealth While Running | 4 | Assassinate without slowing to a crouch |
| Items: Effect Duration | 4 | Longer duration on timed consumables |
| Firebird Flute: Charged Shot | 4 | Adds a charge mechanic to the Armament |
| Break Issen: Red Soul Yield | 5 | More Red Souls from Break Issen |
| Items: Number Found | 5 | Increases consumables found in the world |
Why the direct route to the Oni Portal is blocked
Set the Oni Portal as your destination and the map draws a straight line across a bridge in Eastern Kyoto, roughly between the Kamo River – East and Kiyomizu-zaka Slope areas. That line is a trap. A Malice Barrier and a gate sit in the way, and interacting with the gate returns the message “Cannot be destroyed from this side.”
The intended approach comes from the south. You loop below the barrier, climb up into the village, cross it at roof level, and drop back down on the portal’s side of the gate. Once you’re through, you can break the barrier from the correct side to leave a shortcut for the trip back.

Oni Vision and the bow puzzle inside the Oni Realm

Note: only shoot the mechanisms. There’s no timing element and nothing here can kill you, so if the platforms look wrong, fire again and watch how they swing before moving.
How to confirm the tiers unlocked
The moment the Oni Stone is absorbed, the message “New Enhancements Available at Spirit Mirrors” appears on screen. That’s your confirmation. Walk to any Spirit Mirror, open Enhance Equipment / Abilities, and the tier 4 and 5 rows under Basic Skills and Special Skills will show prices instead of a lock icon.
Buying those skills still costs Red Souls plus Power Stones or Oni Stones, so the unlock and the purchase are two separate steps. If the tier is open but a specific node is still greyed out, it’s a resource shortage or a missing prerequisite node in the same branch.
Common reasons the unlock doesn’t trigger
- The Roots of All Evil isn’t finished. The Oni Portal area is reachable only after that mission, so an early attempt leaves you stuck at the barrier with no alternate route.
- You’re still trying the bridge. The Malice Barrier cannot be broken from the bridge side, and no weapon or Armament will get you through it from there.
- Oni Vision wasn’t used at the dead end. The portal is invisible until Oni Vision is active, and the corridor genuinely looks like a mistake without it.
- Only one mechanism was shot. Both golden mechanisms have to be hit before the platforms form a continuous path to the dark mass.
- You picked up the stone but never returned to a Spirit Mirror. Skills are purchased there, not from the pause menu.
Once tier 4 is open, the cheapest meaningful improvements are usually the ones that fix a move you already use and dislike. Oni Bow: Charge Time makes the Ultimate Charged Attack practical instead of a liability, and Oni Agility: Fall Recovery quietly removes the knockdown punishes that end otherwise clean boss attempts. Tier 6 and beyond stays sealed until Okuni’s Kabuki Dance, so there’s no point saving Oni Stones for it now.
