Steal an Egg: How to Use the Mutation Consumable

The Mutation Consumable is the only reliable way to put the Fractured mutation on a pet in Steal an Egg. It is a purple, crystal-like item sold in the Boss Shop, and it only works under one narrow condition — the egg has to be sitting in your base, unhatched, when you use it. Everything else about the item is a numbers problem, because each attempt succeeds one time in ten.

Quick answer: Buy the Mutation Consumable from the Boss Shop for 400 Boss Tokens, place an unhatched egg on the floor of your base, equip the consumable from your hotbar, stand close to the egg, and hold E on the “10% Success Chance — Apply Mutation” prompt. A success applies Fractured; a failure shows “The consumable fizzled…” and burns the item.

What the Mutation Consumable actually does

The consumable rolls for the Fractured mutation, a colour mutation that cannot appear from a normal hatch. Fractured multiplies a pet’s income by roughly x2.75, which slots it just under Parasite (x3) and above Golden (x2.5) in the mutation order. Since colour mutations and size are rolled separately, a Fractured pet keeps whatever weight it hatches at, and the two multiply together for the final money/s figure.

Requirements before you spend Boss Tokens

Two things need to be true at the same time, and players usually get caught out by the second one. You need 400 Boss Tokens in the Boss Shop, and you need an egg already down on the ground in your base with the hatch still running.

  • Boss Tokens: earned by entering a Rift and defeating the Abyss Overlord. A successful clear is generally worth somewhere in the region of 1,200–1,500 tokens, or about three consumables per boss.
  • An eligible egg: it has to be physically placed in your base. An egg carried in inventory, or a pet that has already hatched, cannot be mutated.

Buying the Mutation Consumable in the Boss Shop

Open the Rift interface using the purple crystal icon on the side of your screen. This is the same menu tree that holds Boss Mastery and the Riftbeasts Banner.
Move into the Boss Shop tab. Your current Boss Token balance sits at the top of the menu, so check it before browsing.

Select the Mutation Consumable and confirm. A “Purchased Mutation Consumable” prompt appears each time, and you can buy several in one visit — which you will want to, given the odds.

For context on what else your tokens can go toward, here is how the shop prices compare.

Applying the consumable to a placed egg

Return to your base and put the egg down on the floor. If the game answers with “Cannot place egg here!”, move to a clear spot inside your own plot and try again.

Interacting with the egg in your base — it has to be on the ground before a mutation can be applied.
Leave the egg unhatched. The mutation is written onto the egg, so once the hatch timer finishes and the pet appears, that egg is no longer a valid target.

Equip the Mutation Consumable from your hotbar, usually slot 1, and walk right up to the egg. Standing too far away produces a “Get closer to the egg” message instead of the interaction prompt.
Hold E on the “10% Success Chance — Apply Mutation” prompt until it completes. Each hold consumes one item, whether it works or not.

How to tell whether the mutation applied

A failure is loud and obvious. The screen prints “The consumable fizzled…” and the item disappears from your inventory with nothing to show for it. A success instead attaches the mutation to the egg, and the pet hatches carrying Fractured with its income multiplier already applied on the pet card.

If nothing happens at all when you hold E, the cause is almost always one of three things — the egg is not placed, you are standing outside interaction range, or the consumable is not the equipped item.

The 10% success rate and how many consumables you need

Every attempt is an independent 10% roll, so failing nine times in a row does not improve the tenth. On average you will spend about ten consumables — 4,000 Boss Tokens — for a single Fractured egg, and it is entirely normal to burn three or four in a row with nothing.

AttemptsToken costChance of at least one success
72,800~52%
104,000~65%
228,800~90%
4417,600~99%
8835,200~99.99%

Note: it is worth stockpiling consumables across several Rift clears before you start, rather than buying one at a time. Interrupting the attempt loop to go farm more tokens risks the egg hatching while you are away.

Which egg is worth the tokens

Because Fractured is a multiplier, its cash value depends entirely on what the egg hatches into. A x2.75 on a low-income starter pet returns very little; the same roll on a high money/s pet, especially a heavy one, is where the number moves. Pick the egg before you start rolling and commit to it, since a mid-attempt swap means starting the 10% grind over on a new target.

Keep the two mutation systems separate in your head as well. Sakura Crystals and the Sakura Incubator handle Bloom and Spirit Bloom, and they have nothing to do with Boss Tokens or the Rift. If you searched for a “Mutation Shard”, the Boss Shop consumable is the item you are after — that name does not exist in game, it is just how players describe the purple crystal.
