Voice chat in WARDOGS is split into two separate channels, and both are controlled from the same place. There is a local or proximity channel for players near you, and a squad channel that stays with your squad even when you are spread across the map. Neither works until the toggles in the Audio tab are switched on and you know which key opens which channel.
Quick answer: Press Escape, open AUDIO, scroll to the VOICE CHAT block, and turn on VOICE CHAT, SQUAD VOICE CHAT and PROXIMITY VOICE CHAT. Then hold J to talk to your squad and K to talk to nearby players.
Turn on voice chat in the WARDOGS Audio settings
All of the voice options live in one menu, and you can reach it mid-match without leaving the server. The changes apply immediately, so you can test them at spawn before anyone drives off.
RETURN TO SPAWN, LEAVE MATCH and EXIT TO DESKTOP, with the settings categories running along the top.
AUDIO. It sits between VIDEO and CONTROLS, alongside GAMEPAD, INTERFACE and EXTRAS.DEVICE SETTINGS. Pick your headset or microphone explicitly in INPUT DEVICE and OUTPUT DEVICE instead of leaving the game to choose for you, because it can move to a different device without telling you.VOIP PROXIMITY VOLUME controls how loud nearby players sound, and VOIP SQUAD VOLUME controls your squad channel. If teammates are audible but buried under gunfire, raise these rather than your master volume.
VOICE CHAT block and check COMMUNICATION STATUS. This line tells you whether the game has actually connected to the voice service. If it is not connected, no keybind will help.VOICE CHAT, then SQUAD VOICE CHAT and PROXIMITY VOICE CHAT. The master toggle gates both channels, so all three need to be on if you want to hear and be heard everywhere.MICROPHONE VOLUME to a level you are happy with and use TEST MICROPHONE to confirm input is registering. If the meter stays flat here, the problem is your device or Windows, not the game’s toggles.Note: RESET TO DEFAULTS at the bottom of the Audio tab will undo everything on this page, including your device choices, so avoid it once voice is working.

Add to Google Preferences →Default push-to-talk keys for squad and proximity
Voice is push-to-talk by default, with a different key for each channel. Open CONTROLS, select the KEYBINDS sub-tab, then scroll to the COMMUNICATION group. Everything voice related is grouped there, next to the ping and tip bindings.

| Binding | Default key | Who hears you |
|---|---|---|
| PUSH-TO-TALK (SQUAD) | J | Your squad, regardless of distance |
| PUSH-TO-TALK (PROXIMITY) | K | Players near your position |
| ENABLE/DISABLE VOICE CHAT (SCOREBOARD) | Set in Communication group | Toggles voice from the scoreboard |
Both binds can be rebound here if J and K clash with how you play. The same COMMUNICATION group also holds PING, PING WHEEL (HOLD), TIP and REJECT TIP, which are worth pairing with voice since a marker plus a short call is far clearer than a call alone.
How to confirm voice chat is working
Do the check at spawn, before your squad splits between vehicles. Hold the squad key and ask for a one-word confirmation from each member, then hold the proximity key and do the same with whoever is standing next to you. Two separate confirmations tell you both channels are live, which matters because one can fail while the other works.
Inside the game, COMMUNICATION STATUS is the fastest indicator. A connected status plus a moving level bar in TEST MICROPHONE means the game is receiving your input and talking to the voice service.

Nobody can hear you: fixes for a microphone that will not transmit
The common failure looks like this. Your microphone is listed in the Audio tab, you can hear everyone else, the push-to-talk indicator reacts, but the input bars never move and nobody responds. The same headset works fine in Discord. That pattern almost always points at Windows audio configuration rather than the game.
DEVICE SETTINGS so the two cannot disagree.XLR interfaces and USB studio microphones run into sample-rate and exclusive-mode conflicts more often than simple headsets. If none of the above helps, try a different USB port or plug in a basic headset to rule out the hardware entirely.
When the outage is not on your end
Voice in WARDOGS runs through a third-party provider, and that provider has gone down more than once. BULKHEAD acknowledged voice chat outages for Closed Alpha playtesters in August, and again on September 4 for Closed Beta playtesters, describing it as an issue affecting multiple titles and outside the studio’s direct control. The recommended workaround is toggling VOICE CHAT off and back on in settings.
Use the symptom to tell the two apart. If nobody in the match can hear anybody, including players who were fine a minute earlier, treat it as a service problem and toggle voice rather than reinstalling audio drivers. If only you are inaudible while everyone else is talking normally, the fault is your input setup.
Which channel to use, and what each one covers
The two channels are not interchangeable. Proximity covers players physically near you and is what solo players use at spawn to pull strangers into a working squad. The squad channel keeps you connected to your own squad once vehicles separate everyone.
| Channel | Best used for |
|---|---|
| Proximity voice | Forming a squad at spawn, handing off a task to a nearby group, immediate calls to whoever is beside you |
| Squad voice | Movement calls, contact reports, transport and resupply requests once the squad is spread out |
There is no separate command or squad-leader channel to route calls between squads. Coordination across squads has to travel through map markers plus a repeat of the message inside each squad channel, or through a player moving between the two groups.
One caution on proximity. The word describes a local channel, not a measured distance, and the exact audible range and whether enemies can hear you are not published. Until that is nailed down, keep spawn locations and route details on the squad channel rather than broadcasting them locally.
Make each call worth the airtime
A 100-player match across three teams produces a lot of chatter, and calls that skip the detail are noise. A workable format is to name who the call is for, where the thing is, what is happening, and what you want done. “Squad, north wall at the grid edge, two infantry moving east, hold the doorway” gives a teammate something to act on. “They’re over there” does not.

Pair voice with the ping wheel wherever position matters. A marker survives a garbled transmission and gives anyone who dropped out a point to rejoin, which is more reliable than repeating a landmark three times while under fire. Get the toggles set once, learn the two keys, and the rest is just discipline on the channel.
