Adversity Mode is the hardest thing Zenless Zone Zero currently asks of you. It sits inside Deadly Assault, it uses one enormously durable boss instead of three, and it hands out no Polychrome at all — just a title, a namecard, an animated avatar, and a leaderboard slot. The Deadly Assault cycle refreshed on Friday, September 11th, which means the stage list, the buff list, and everyone’s best total score all reset together.
Quick answer: Earn 9 stars in this season’s Deadly Assault Trial Mode, then open the Adversity tab — the mode stays unlocked even if you reset your lineup afterward.
How to unlock Adversity Mode in Deadly Assault
Deadly Assault itself opens at Inter-Knot Level 40 once Shiyu Defense is unlocked and the Deadly Situation commission is cleared. Adversity Mode is gated behind the Trial side of it, and the requirement is a flat number rather than a specific clear.
Note: resetting your Trial lineup clears previously earned battle scores but keeps your highest star record, your claimed rewards, and your Adversity unlock status. You cannot lose access by experimenting.

Your total score is Damage Score plus Performance Points. Damage Score is what it sounds like, and it does most of the heavy lifting. Performance Points are awarded for executing specific defensive actions during the fight, and they cap out at 5,000 — which is why two players with wildly different damage output can still land within a few thousand points of each other at the bottom end.

Those points are spread across the fight rather than front-loaded, so timing matters. The window for a defensive trigger often lines up with a boss skill you also want to be damaging through, and missing the parry costs you both the points and the follow-up opening.

Two other rules shape the run. The boss gets stronger as its HP drops, so the back half of the fight is harder than the front. And your best total score is the highest single result you post in the current season — resetting your lineup does not wipe it, and neither does a worse follow-up attempt. Hitting 3 stars also unlocks the season leaderboard.
The Sep 11 rotation: stages and buffs
Each session runs three Trial bosses and a single Adversity boss, with weaknesses and resistances listed in the challenge details before you commit a team. Agents and Bangboo cannot be reused across Trial stages in the same session, so the lineup you spend on stage one is gone for stages two and three.
| Mode | Stage |
|---|---|
| Trial | Kusarikku |
| Trial | Girtablullu – Stagnant Aberrant |
| Trial | Ye Shiyuan the Thrall |
| Adversity | Integrated – Scorched Horizon |
Buff selection is per-stage, not per-season, so you pick again each time you enter a fight. Gleaming Frost, Sharp Rupture, and Cinders of Corrosion are the options on the board this cycle. Picking the buff that matches your squad’s specialty spread is usually worth more than swapping an agent, because the buffs scale damage and resistance shred rather than just adding flat stats.

What a strong score looks like right now
For a reference point on the current rotation, a clean Trial sweep with Remielle Dan and Velina Airgid handling Girtablullu and a Ye Shunguang and Zhao core taking the other two stages lands at 128,075 across all three bosses. That breaks down as 23,533 on Kusarikku, 56,601 on Girtablullu – Stagnant Aberrant, and 47,941 on Ye Shiyuan the Thrall.
Adversity is a much steeper wall. The same Remielle and Velina team, with Remielle at M2W1 and the rest of the squad at M0W1, posts 30,337 against Integrated – Scorched Horizon. That is a genuinely high result for the stage.

For context on the other end of the curve, most players hitting Adversity for the first time land somewhere between 6,000 and 16,000. Full-dupe squads have needed the entire three minutes to finish a run, and plenty of people running strong normal Deadly Assault teams have stalled around 11,000. The mode was designed as an investment check, and the community read it that way almost immediately.
The consensus that has settled since is more specific than “whale mode.” An M0W1 clear is possible, but it requires a current meta team, well-rolled Drive Discs, and clean execution — you cannot brute-force it the way you can a normal Deadly Assault stage. If you are not already maxing your Trial scores, 3 stars in Adversity is unlikely.

Adversity Mode star rewards
There is no Polychrome in Adversity Mode. The payout is Investigation Certificates plus cosmetic items, and the 2-star and 3-star rewards are granted immediately once the result finalizes.
| Stars | Rewards |
|---|---|
| 1 Star | Title “Crisis: First Edge”, 300 Investigation Certificates |
| 2 Stars | Starforged Sword Song, 300 Investigation Certificates |
| 3 Stars | Tempered Crown, 100 Investigation Certificates |
The namecard and dynamic avatar tied to the 2-star and 3-star tiers are time-limited. Their validity matches the length of the current Deadly Assault season, so a 14-day season grants a 14-day avatar. Earn it again while the old one is still active and the duration extends by another 14 days rather than resetting.
Why Adversity runs come up short
The failure modes are narrow and repeatable. Spending your best agents on Trial stages leaves nothing for Adversity, since the lineup lock applies across the session. Missing parry and defensive assist windows caps your Performance Points well below 5,000. And a squad that does not match the boss’s listed weakness will simply run out the three-minute clock before the HP bar empties, because the enemy’s damage scaling kicks in as it gets lower.
You will know the attempt registered when the Challenge Results screen posts a rank and a total score, and your best total score updates on the Adversity tab. If a run scored lower than a previous attempt, the higher figure stays — there is no downside to retrying beyond the time you spend, and the lineup reset is there whenever you want to rebuild around a different core before the cycle turns over again in two weeks.
