Plenty of Valheim runs stall at the same point. You have bronze gear, a boat, and a growing pile of amber, but no merchant to spend it with. Haldor, the Dvergr trader, sells items you cannot craft at any workbench, and his camp follows strict placement rules that decide whether your search takes twenty minutes or three in-game days.
Quick answer: Haldor only spawns in Black Forest biomes at least 1,500 meters from the center of the world. Sail along unexplored Black Forest coastlines past that radius and watch for a bag icon to appear on your map — it pops up roughly 320 to 453 meters out, and once it appears, Haldor is locked to that spot permanently.
How Haldor’s spawn works in Valheim
Every world generates ten candidate spots for Haldor, all of them inside Black Forest. Only one of them ever becomes his camp. The moment you get close enough for the surrounding zones to load, the game picks that location and plants him there for good. He does not wander, he does not despawn, and logging out and back in will not reroll him.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Biome | Black Forest only |
| Distance from world center | At least 1,500 meters |
| Candidate locations per world | 10, but only one is used |
| Icon reveal range | About 320–453 meters |
| Permanence | Placed forever once approached |
That 1,500 meter floor is the part most players trip over. If your starting island and its immediate neighbors sit near the middle of the map, you can clear every Black Forest within reach, empty the Burial Chambers, mark every copper node, and still never see the bag icon. There is nothing to find there.

The bag icon on the world map is the first confirmation, and it appears at roughly double your default minimap range, so you will usually see the marker before you see the camp. Sail or run toward it and the camp itself is unmistakable: a large wooden wagon pulled by a tamed Lox named Halstein, a canopy, barrels, tables, and display racks of spears, swords, shields, helmets, and food.
The camp sits inside a shimmering transparent dome. That dome is a safe zone. Greydwarfs, Trolls, and everything else in the forest cannot cross it, and it cannot be destroyed. If you can walk through a faint ripple in the air and hostile mobs stop chasing you, you are in the right place. Haldor greets new arrivals with lines like “Oh! A customer!” and “Take a look at my wares.”
Gear to bring before you leave
The trip is long and the Black Forest punishes under-equipped Vikings. Carry a repaired weapon and shield, a stack of cooked food, and enough materials for a workbench, a portal, and a bed, because you will want a spawn point out there.

Because Haldor sits past the 1,500 meter mark, you almost certainly need a boat. A Karve is the practical minimum for coastal exploring, and it costs 30 Fine Wood, 10 Deer Hide, 20 Resin, and 80 Bronze Nails. The Bronze Nails mean a forge, which means copper and tin first. Budget an in-game day or two for the prep.

Search method: sail the Black Forest coastlines

Tip: build that portal inside the safe zone. A workbench parked out in the open forest can be smashed by Greydwarfs while you are away, and without a nearby workbench the portal cannot be repaired or rebuilt when you return.
Why the bag icon never shows up
Failed searches almost always come down to a small number of causes, and none of them are bad luck.
- You are still inside the 1,500 meter radius around the world center, where no candidate location exists.
- You are searching Meadows, Swamp, or Plains. Haldor never appears outside Black Forest.
- You sailed past a coast too far offshore, so the land zones never generated.
- You covered one island thoroughly instead of covering many islands partially. Only one of the ten spots is real, so breadth beats depth.
On a shared world, the search only has to happen once. After any player triggers his placement, Haldor stays there for everyone on the server.
Find Haldor from your world save file
If you would rather skip the voyage, a trader finder reads your world database and returns the merchant locations without revealing the rest of the map. Local worlds live at %userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds, and Steam Cloud saves sit under Steam\userdata\YOUR_NUMERIC_STEAM_ID\892970\remote\worlds. You upload the world.db file and get directions to Haldor, Hildir, and the Bog Witch.
What Haldor sells and what it costs
Haldor deals in Coins only. Some of his stock is available from your first visit, and the rest unlocks as you clear bosses.
| Item | Coins | Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Megingjord (+150 carry weight) | 950 | Always |
| Dverger circlet (head light) | 620 | Always |
| Fishing rod | 350 | Always |
| Fishing bait x20 | 10 | Always |
| Yule hat (cosmetic) | 100 | Always |
| Barrel hoops x3 | 100 | Always |
| Ymir flesh | 120 | After The Elder |
| Thunder stone (Obliterator) | 50 | After The Elder |
| Wider Pockets (+1 inventory row) | 1,000 | After Moder |
| Egg | 1,500 | After Yagluth |
| Deeper Pockets (+1 inventory row) | 2,000 | After The Queen |
The Megingjord is the purchase worth saving for. Raising your carry limit by 150 changes every mining trip and every hauling run for the rest of the game. Note that it takes the same slot as the Wishbone, so you cannot wear both at once.
How to earn Coins for Haldor
Coins come out of chests in Burial Chambers, Sunken Crypts, stone ruins, and Fuling villages, and Trolls drop them too. Do not leave the valuables behind either — Haldor buys four items outright, and a full stack is worth a serious chunk of a Megingjord.

| Item he buys | Per unit | Per full stack |
|---|---|---|
| Amber pearl | 10 | 500 (stack of 50) |
| Silver necklace | 30 | 600 (stack of 20) |
| Ruby | 20 | 400 (stack of 20) |
| Amber | 5 | 100 (stack of 20) |
Clearing Burial Chambers along the way handles both halves of the problem. You explore new Black Forest ground looking for the bag icon, and you walk out with Amber Pearls, Surtling Cores, and Coins for the shopping list. By the time the marker finally shows up, you should already have enough in the bank to walk out of Haldor’s camp wearing the belt.
