How to Control the Parachute in WARDOGS (Sport Canopy)

The Basic canopy only slows your fall — steering needs the Sport Parachute, Wardog Level 35, and nine kilograms of loadout space.

Jumping out of a helicopter in WARDOGS is easy. Landing somewhere useful is the hard part, and most players discover that the cheap canopy in their Traversal slot drops them straight down like a brick with a bedsheet attached. Steering is a separate purchase, not a control setting.

Quick answer: Only the Sport Parachute can be steered. Buy it from the Equipment Vendor’s Gear tab after reaching Wardog Level 35, deploy it with Space once you are already falling, then use your normal look and movement input to glide and flare.

Sport Parachute vs Basic Parachute: which one can be steered

Both canopies sit in the Traversal slot, both are single use, and both take a 3×2 block of inventory. That is where the similarity ends. The Basic Parachute reduces fall damage and nothing more — it holds whatever heading you had when it opened and bleeds altitude until you touch down. The Sport Parachute actually flies, converting height into horizontal distance and letting you pick a landing point instead of accepting one.

Note: prices and weight have moved between test builds. Earlier builds sold the two canopies for $50 and $500, with the Sport listed at 5 kg. Read the vendor card before you buy rather than trusting a number you memorized last patch.

Buy the Sport Parachute at the Equipment Vendor

Head to the Equipment Vendor in camp before you queue for a bird. The parachute is gear you carry into the match, so there is no way to grab one mid-flight once the helicopter is already taking fire.
Open the vendor menu and check the Overview tab first. The Traversal slot is where a parachute lives, and it competes with nothing else — but the weight comes straight out of your carrying allowance.

Switch to the Gear tab and find the two parachute entries. The Basic Parachute card spells out its limits plainly — manual deployment, single use, cannot be controlled, reduced fall damage when deployed.
Select the Sport Parachute. If you are below the requirement, the card shows “REACH WARDOG LVL 35” instead of a buy option. Once you clear that level, the entry becomes purchasable and its description changes to promise greater control for evading fire and steering to a landing point — that swap is your confirmation the unlock went through.

Deploy Parachute and Cut Parachute keybinds

On the default PC layout, Deploy Parachute is Space and Cut Parachute is C. Neither canopy opens on its own. The prompt is contextual, which means it will not show up while you are standing on a rooftop deciding whether to jump — you have to be in the air and falling before the game offers you the pull.

Cutting collapses the canopy mid-air and drops you the rest of the way, which is how you escape a slow descent that has made you an easy target. It is not a way to save the pack. A cut spends the parachute exactly like landing under it does, and there is no second pull.

Flying the Sport canopy: glide, flare, and stamina

Under the Sport canopy you are steering an aircraft, not falling with style. Glide trades altitude for distance, so a high jump can carry you to a tower or a flank that roads do not reach. The trade-off is a slower turn rate than the Basic canopy, so commit to a heading early rather than sawing back and forth over the landing zone.

The flare is the part that keeps you alive. Pulling up against your descent bleeds off speed just before touchdown, and it draws on a stamina pool that drains far faster than it refills.

Sport canopy valueFigure
Top forward speed22 m/s
Top downward speed30 m/s
Flare stamina drain50 per second
Flare stamina regain30 per second

Because the drain outpaces the regain, holding a flare too long leaves you with an empty pool and the ground still coming. Save it for the last stretch. The descent speed the Sport canopy permits will hurt you if you arrive flat out, which is precisely why the flare exists.

Fix Deploy Parachute showing as unbound

A common failure has nothing to do with which canopy you bought. If you rebind a helicopter control — most often the collective — to Space, the game strips the key off Deploy Parachute and leaves it unbound, and there is no entry in the controls menu to put it back. Resetting controls in-game does not restore it.

Fully close the game so it is not holding the settings file open.
Open the config file for your Windows user account.
C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Wardogs\Saved\Config\WindowsClient\GameUserSettings.ini
Find the line containing DeployParachute and delete the whole line, then save. Removing the empty override lets the game fall back to the default binding.
Relaunch and check the action in the controls menu, then test it somewhere harmless before you trust it over a contested zone. A drop from a modest height in a safe area is enough to confirm the prompt appears and the canopy opens.

Tip: check both the helicopter and parachute bindings after every patch. Infantry, ground vehicle, and rotary actions share binding rules in the current build, so a conflict you fixed once can come back the next time settings are rewritten.

When 9 kg of steering is worth carrying

The weight is the real cost, not the thousand dollars. Nine kilograms is ammunition or armour you are leaving behind, and nothing about the Sport canopy makes an ordinary landing safer. If the helicopter is dumping you onto open ground you already intended to reach, the Basic Parachute does that job for $100 and 2.5 kg.

Pay for the Sport canopy when the drop is transport rather than a landing — jumping high to cross ground, thread past anti-air, or put yourself on a rooftop the roads do not serve. Glide is the only thing that turns altitude into distance, and that is the one case where the weight earns its slot.
