The keystone and gear mod that silently switch off rolling, plus how to confirm your roll is back.

You press Space, nothing happens, and your character just stands there taking hits. In Path of Exile 2, a dead dodge roll is almost never a bug. Something in your build is telling the game that your character cannot roll at all, and in the vast majority of cases it is a single modifier called Unwavering Stance.

Quick answer: Open your inventory and passive tree and look for Unwavering Stance. Unequip the item that grants it (commonly the Ezomyte Peak Soldier Greathelm) or unallocate the keystone, and your dodge roll returns immediately.

What Unwavering Stance does to your character

Unwavering Stance is a straight trade. You get immunity to light stun, and in exchange the game removes rolling and sprinting from your character entirely. It is not a cooldown, a cost, or a soft penalty you can play around. The action is gone until the modifier is gone.

Modifier lineWhat it means in play
Cannot be Light StunnedSmall hits no longer interrupt your attacks or animations.
Cannot Dodge Roll or SprintThe Space key (or B on an Xbox controller) does nothing. Sprint is disabled too.

There are two places this modifier can come from, and you need to check both. It appears on certain gear pieces, and it also exists as a keystone on the Passive Skills tree.

Rule out your keybinds first

Open the Options menu and go to the Input tab. Look for the entries labelled Dodge/Sprint and Dodge Only, and confirm at least one of them is bound to a key you are actually pressing. Space is the default on PC, and B is the default on an Xbox controller.

If a bind looks correct, close the menu and test the key in town, away from monsters. A working roll is obvious, since your character visibly rolls a short distance in the direction you are moving. If the key is bound and still does nothing, the problem is your build, not your settings.

Check your gear for the Unwavering Stance mod

Open your inventory and hover over every equipped piece, starting with your helmet. Unique items are the usual culprits, so read the full tooltip rather than skimming the top few lines.
Look specifically for the Unwavering Stance header and the two lines beneath it. The Ezomyte Peak Soldier Greathelm is the item most players run into, and its tooltip spells the restriction out plainly.

The helmet is easy to pick up early and easy to forget about, because everything else on it reads like a straight upgrade. Here is what it carries:

Ezomyte Peak Soldier GreathelmValue
RequirementsLevel 12, 19 Str
Armour73% increased Armour
Life+50 to maximum Life
Regeneration5% Life Regeneration per second
Area15% increased Area of Effect
Unwavering StanceCannot be Light Stunned, Cannot Dodge Roll or Sprint
Unequip the offending piece and put it somewhere safe. Dropping it in your stash keeps it available in case you later decide the stun immunity is worth more to your build than mobility.

Check the Passive Skills tree for the Unwavering Stance keystone

Open the Passive Skills panel and review the keystones you have allocated. Unwavering Stance exists on the tree as well, and it behaves exactly the same way as the gear version. If you took it while chasing nearby damage or defence nodes, this is your answer.

Unallocate the keystone. Rolling comes back the moment the point is refunded, with no zone change or relog required.

Note: both sources can be active at once. If you strip the helmet and still cannot roll, the keystone is still allocated, and the reverse is equally true.

How to confirm the dodge roll is back

Tap your dodge key in an open area. Your character should roll roughly 3.7 metres in the direction you are facing, with no mana cost and no cooldown, so you can immediately tap it again. Holding the key instead of tapping should produce a roll followed by a sprint.

If the roll animation plays, the fix worked. There is no confirmation message and no buff icon to watch for, since the roll is a default action that every character has rather than a skill you slot.

Other reasons the roll does not fire

Unwavering Stance is the common cause, but a few other things will make the key feel broken when it is working as designed.

CauseWhat happens
Blink is activeThis persistent buff reserves 60 Spirit and replaces the roll with a short teleport that has a cooldown. Deactivate Blink to get the roll back.
Demon FormThe roll is replaced with a dash rather than removed.
Black Powder BlitzReplaces the roll with an explosive leap.
TerrainYou cannot roll across gaps, over low obstacles like fences, or between different elevations. The input is simply ignored.
Mid-roll inputA roll can cancel almost any other skill, but it cannot cancel another roll, so inputs pressed during the animation are dropped.

There is also a separate movement problem that WASD players reported after sprinting was added in patch 0.3.1, where a tapped roll would run on into a sprint and then leave rolling unavailable until the pause menu was opened and closed. A related issue that allowed the roll to chain cancel itself was addressed in patch 0.4.0d, so make sure the client is fully updated before chasing it further.

Worth remembering before you write Unwavering Stance off entirely: it exists for builds that want to stand still and keep swinging, and giving up the roll is the intended cost. If you are building around heavy armour and stun immunity, losing mobility may be the point. For everyone else, the helmet goes in the stash and the keystone stays unallocated.
