Fisch: How to Get the Walrus at Snowcap Island

The Walrus is an Exotic-rarity catch tied to Snowcap Island, and it only bites when three conditions line up at once. Miss any one of them and you will keep pulling up Arctic Char and Lingcod instead.

Quick answer: Fish the ocean around Snowcap Island during Winter with Clear weather and Shrimp equipped as bait. Time of day does not matter.

Note: the Walrus is a luck-favoring fish, meaning higher luck on your rod or from totems and enchantments raises your chance of hooking it. It is not required, but it shortens the grind considerably.

How to catch the Walrus at Snowcap Island

Check the in-game season and weather before you travel. The season must be Winter and the sky must be Clear. If the weather is wrong, a weather totem can force the condition rather than waiting for the cycle to roll over.

Travel to Snowcap Island by boat. The compass markers at the top of the screen will show the island name as you close in, so steer toward that label.

Open your inventory and equip Shrimp as your bait. Without it, the Walrus chance drops sharply even under perfect weather and season conditions.

Stand on the shoreline or one of the ice floes and cast into the ocean water surrounding the island. Freshwater spots on Snowcap will not produce a Walrus.

Reel carefully. The Walrus has a resilience of 20 and a progress speed of -92%, so the bar fills slowly and punishes sloppy inputs. Keep the marker centered rather than rushing the catch.

How to confirm the catch worked

When a Walrus is hooked, your character shouts either “A WALRUS?!” or “BIG OL’ TEETH!” as the catch resolves. The fish then appears in your hands with a size label attached, and the bestiary entry for the Walrus flips from locked to discovered.

Size is determined by weight. A catch under 200kg registers as Tiny, under 396kg as Small, anything above 2,500kg as Big, and above 4,975kg as Giant.

The Walrus sells at 2.14 C$ per kilogram and grants 5,480 XP, which makes weight the deciding factor in how much a single catch is worth.

Why the Walrus is not spawning

Almost every failed attempt comes down to one of a short list of causes.

The season is not Winter. This is the hardest condition to force and the most common reason the fish never appears.
The weather is Foggy, Rain, or Windy instead of Clear.
A different bait is equipped, or no bait is equipped at all.
You are casting into Snowcap’s freshwater rather than the surrounding ocean.
Low luck. Exotic fish favor luck, so an underpowered rod stretches the attempt count out considerably.

The Walrus arrived alongside the Blue Galapagos Octopus at Desolate Deep and the Reef Triggerfish at Roslit Bay, so if you are already sailing between islands to fill out the bestiary, it is worth chaining all three into one session while your bait stock holds.
